Prices on a full Gig-E commit currently work out at around 20c-50c / GB i.e. ~300 3 minute MP3s or 1 MPEG4 movie, still far cheaper than buying CDs and DVDs, plus if you know anything about the history of the Net you'll know that metering has always been a barrier to take up of use, unmetered access has always attracted more customers, so unless your access provider wants to commit suicide or is monopoly you should have little to worry about.

It is a story, one about how even those that purport to know something really know nothing. For example there was a Sigourny Weaver movie made on Digital Video for less than $150K, and alot of us /.ers have seen the Platrix and South Powers and lots of other great short animation on the net, lets look at the simple economics, movie making equipment is cheaper than ever, mainly due to DV and computer animation / editing, you can't sneeze in LA without hitting a wannabe actor/actress parking cars or waiting tables, not to mention the hordes of stage acting talent in every major city on the planet, sets can be digitally created, who knows maybe one day all films will be shot on blue screens and the set added digitally later. What is left for lavish expenses? Costumes? Cringelys article is a tour de force of the type of myopic thinking that all these "pundits" engage in, and if he's really good in ten years he'll claim my writing as his own and be praised as a visionary. /cynical bastard

Indeed the follow-through that I missed out, though was hoping was implied that it justifies anyone attacking anyone, anytime such as the attacks of 9/11, as I see it there are two possible positions that can be taken a) we'll attack and kill anyone we feel like based on our own personal prejudices, financial wants etc (the position of the US political establishment, Saddam Hussien, Pol Pot, Stalin, Hitler and other tyrrants) or b) only attack to defend ourselves (the position of most "civilised" nations), and there is the question of equality, e.g. if the US wishes to hold Saddam liable for the use of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq war,or to kill his own population in Halabja and elsewhere then the same standard must be applied to those who knowingly supplied the material and technology to carry out those horrific deeds, even if some of them put Dubya in office, anything else would brand the US at best a nation of hypocrits and at worst the land of the "civilised psychopath" as Norman Mailer puts it so eliquently.

You're living it havent you noticed Dubya's war on Iraq is about what Iraq might do, but then we've been here so many times before, for example the overthrow of Irans government in 1953 by the CIA because they "might" have nationalised the oil fields, havent you noticed how might and maybe and perhaps are used by politicians, especially American ones, to justify the use of lethal force to take what isnt theirs?

As far as starting a consultancy, instead of just having to make a sale at the job interview you have to make constant sales, and right now with your brief post I'd say that might be hard for you, you'd need to find someone who could sell your services unless you plan to take a crash course in sales. All I can recommend is find a job so you're set for living expenses, and then look around and see if other opportunities arise unless of course you have an idea that will create the next Netscape, if so then stock up on Mountain Dew and start coding...
