You should wander over to broadbandreports.com and post this very same comment in a number of threads in their Comcast HSI forum. Their advice is almost always to call support and to play dumb. However playing dumb is what results in threads like "4th call to Crapcast and they still won't send a tech out to fix my Internet."

I'm ashamed to admit that it took me a couple of years to finally figure this out. I kept thinking, well their CSRs are trained to deal with dummies, so I have to pretend to be an moron to get them to do anything. However the truth of the matter is you need to as quickly as possible get away from them and over to a higher tier that knows and can do something.

I know the Ubuntu board should have helped with the problem, but the people who participate in that board are likely to be just as new to Ubuntu as you are. In these so called easy to use distros, you'll see this problem a lot. I have a similar problem with fedoraforum.org. Most of my questions go unanswered, get answered wrongly, or it feels like I'm talking to a Comcast customer support script reader. This is because most of the users are not Linux gurus, but inexperienced people. I've only been using Xen since RHEL 5 came out. So I'm not an expert. Here are my thoughts on Xen: 1) Hardware cost savings isn't a good as you'd think. For every virtual box, you still need CPU(s), RAM, and harddrive space. i.e. If you've only got X CPUs on in a physical box, you're limited to X-1 virtual boxes assuming just one CPU per virtual box (performance degrades horribly if you start assigning more CPUs than you physically have). The real savings is probably in power consumption, but that only matters if your Google or a Fortune100 company. 2) Don't try to use a GUI on a virtual Linux install. The mouse is horribly broken. RH even admits this in their documentation. 3) The only place to get help is a high traffic email list where your question can easily be lost. Don't even think of asking in the Xen forum unless you're paying Xensource $$$ 4) How-To's are few and far between and often contradictory. 5) WinXP runs extremely well under Xen. I've got 4 in production now. Linux also works fine (I've got 3 in production) as long as you don't need the GUI. 5) #2-#4 will probably work themselves out in the next year or two. 6) Overall in spite of the above problems, Xen is extremely cool and can save your company some resources and make it more productive. It will also only get better as time goes on. If you're not using it, you should at least start to consider it and start testing with some non-critical systems.

Host 10 domains on the same discount webhost for more than a year or two and suddenly you've got 10 clients screaming at you that their site is down or their email isn't working. Most of these discount hosting companies have very similar features and costs. It really doesn't cost you any more to host 10 domains on 10 different webhosts, as long as they provide the same uptime and service. In fact it saves you problems in the future. Eventually there will be downtime or a webhost will go bad. In stead of having all 10 of your sites experience down time and need to move them all at once, you'll only have to worry about one site. My problem is that I've only found two good discount hosts (and one of them is starting to go bad I think). I'm just glad most of my clients have grown and need their own servers. Ture, the EVDO card you get with the plan uses the cell phone network to transfer your data. However it is meant to be your laptop's internet connection. Your cell phone does not use this plan at all.

I was on the road for a solid month last year and used their little EVDO card. My company is big enough that we have some exclusive deal where we really do get unlimited bandwidth. Just looking at the emails I downloaded in the first week I think I went over the 5GB. In the emails, there were 4 ppt files, 20 doc files, and 1 xls file. That xls file alone totaled just under 2GB (which is the max file size allowed by our server).

So at least in my case 5GB/month would really not work and I'm lucky to work for a big enough client that they can really get the unlimited bandwith.

The card was so good (speed was very close to my crapcast cable modem) and worked really everywhere (except in some very very very rual parts of Wyoming and Montana) that I was thinking about getting one for my personal use. Then I saw the that not only do you pay a fifty-some dollars a month but there is also a per kilobit charge on top of the monthly fee too. Now that I see there is a 5GB limit, I'm really glad I didn't get one.

For the person who asked about getting $BIG_COMPANY to let him use *nix on his desktop, I'd suggest going dual boot. That's what I do. It is a pain whenever you have to use $BIG_COMPANY_IE_ONLY_APP, however for most of the time you don't have to be in Windoze. I finally convinced my place to spring for a laptop, which I keep Windoze and use all of the IE only company apps, but my desktop is now 100% Linux. I understand a lot of progress has been made with virturalization, so maybe you can run a virturalized Windoze box on your desktop. This is why I still usually will ask for a special order. Usually the special order is cooked fresh and hadn't been sitting out under a heat lamp. First problem. I had a shiny new install of FC3. I try to get apache to start serving webpages. It only works in one directory. The folks at fedoraforum.org were useless as usual. A couple of posts on an apache email list had me remove the php, apache, and mysql rpms and reinstall from source. After a week of nothing working, I finally stumbled upon some vague reference about SELinux could cause my problem. I was on the right track, but fixing the SELinux policy was almost impossible and I had to just disable it.

My second problem happened right after I upgraded to FC5. The first boot, it claims it needs to do an SELinux relabel. WTF? 5 min later it finally finishes the bootup. However even root can't login to the box. Box is destroyed. A few days later, somehow I managed to get into the single user mode, I found that the config file still had SELINUX=disabled in it. So now SELinux was ignoring its own config file! The only way I could finally disable it was to go into grub and put the selinux=0 into the boot line. I'm scared to death to upgrade to FC6. What happens with SELinux ignores the boot line? If there is an option to take it off my system when I upgrade, you bet I'll take it.

I'm actually putting off upgrading. I'm looking for a distro that doesn't use SELinux. I've been using RH since 6.1, but this SELinux thing is probably the straw that broke the camel's back.

As for your php problem. Remove all of the php rpms and install from source. It does not invalidate your support (at least it hasn't invalidated ours). You can get multiple version of php running on the same server. You can do it with mulitple apache installs or through http://groups.google.com/group/alt.php/browse_frm/ thread/e19e4d7ab309ed3b/2e18b77fa8c54b83?lnk=st&q= install+multiple+versions+of+php&rnum=13&hl=en#2e1 8b77fa8c54b83">playing with the apache handlers.
