Hobbs: Stop repeating everything I say.

Hobbs: I'm a maggot with lumpy gravy for Brains.
Calvin: Well at least you have the courage to admit it...

Calvin (one bashing later): Sooner or later everyone falls for that

  2. System crash or Software crash on EWeek Details Linux to Windows Migration · · Score: 2, Interesting

From the article: There was a limit set up within the program that said you can only order 'x' amount of products within one transaction," Roy said. "When one of our guests went over the limit, it crashed the whole store. We then had to manually identify the erroneous credit card charges.

Ok, more a comment on the reporting than the situation, if the store crashed because of this error, surely it's a software issue, i.e. the e-commerce package they were using borked. I would imagine (read like to think), the underlying OS was ok.

For me it's a bad example, they could have well installed on a Windows base and had the same problem.

  3. Re:Buy a TiVo! on PVR's Head-to-Head: MythTV vs. Microsoft MCE · · Score: 1

Depends whether you want a simple TV PVR or an all in one media box.

I've got a very similar system to yours and it does:
    - TV / PVR
    - Stereo (Entire music collection)
    - DVD player
    - Digital Camera download & photo album

Not to mention weather/basic web/news feeds/being programmable from work...

I agree if you just want a PVR then a Tivo is a very viable option, but you can't beat being able to extend it to do other functions too.

One should note that this isn't too much of a loss for the company as they already have the money.

Yes, but they lose out if you decide to buy similar gift vouchers from other stores when buying for friends etc.

Basically a friendly policy towards outdated vouchers is more likely to win you future business than an unfriendly one.

  6. If it's expired ask... on WA Bans Gift-Card Expirations, Fees · · Score: 5, Interesting

I've more than once managed to use an expired gift voucher, with some gentle persuasion.

I guess it boils down to the store and how rigid they are with their policies, but if they reject it, then they run the risk of you shopping elsewhere.

Look after yourself. As a tech going round many offices you're going to be far more exposed to illness than working in a single office. You will get colds / bugs etc, but your immune system will strengthen as a result. If you get ill, take the day off, you will recover far more quickly than if you try and soldier on, also you won't turn up on client site's dripping with goo and put off customers. If you are worried about serious illness then some sort of insurance is probably worthwhile.

  12. This doesn't surprise me, I've done it :-) on Desktop Linux Sliding in Under the Radar? · · Score: 1

About 4 years ago I was working for a largeish European computer supplier in their laptop software install development team.

I started to run Linux on my desktop (a laptop ironically) and made a point of trying to do everything though Linux.

When IT came round making sure everyone was upgraded to the latest version of MS Office, I was away from my desk, I came back to a note saying, "we couldn't install this because we don't know your username and password, I have left the CD so you can do it yourself."

I certainly don't think they were aware that this was going on.

My coup de grais was evangelising enough so a couple of other colleages (including my boss) had a play with Linux :-)
