  1. use IMAP on How Do You Store and Reconcile Email Archives? · · Score: 1

Most email solutions have some form of IMAP connector so run a local IMAP server on a box. COnnect to that via you email client and drag your email into the imap folders. I had an old outlook PST file and few old OE relics that I migrated onto a more flexible UNIX solution just by connecting Outlook (imported OE into outlook easily enough) to IMAP and draggging the emails into the IMAP folder.

Basicly there should be least some form of migration/upgrade available to most formats that least allows you a way to get it onto IMAP. Worst case you may have to script something but I'd guess that would be some real perverse format and would very very old, but there again by definition it wouldn;t be that complicated (ie pre attachm, ent days type affairs). Also if your realy stuck you could always use a macro program to copy and paste them all out :).

good point about web app's, but that would be a case as is for user lic's. Simultanious users at any one time. Or in the case of a database,; number of connections/sessions in the case of a web application. However, this does lead to the potential case of single backend application handling all the databse connections and soley dealing with the databse, appearing as and only needing one connection. Even limitatioins on size can be got around easily enough and in alot of cases most desirable for many reasons. Hmmmm, I guess we may just end up with transactionaly thorottled engines depending on how much we pay. i.e. 50 tps 50$ a month, 100tps 100$ a month 1000 tps 200$ p....... This again, whilst not cpu based, does still rest on the number of users heavily more. Though with certain types of applications this approach would have its ups and downs. Datawharehouses would be expensive, but ifyou have say a site lic. per tps then datawarehouse become more palatable.

  9. dual user - yes, dual core lic's - NO on Should Dual Cores Require Dual Licenses? · · Score: 1

Costs per use of a program should be based upon the users and not what it runs on. If somebody wants to run Oracle on a single 900 cpu box then they should pay X amount. If two users access the database at a time on a single CPU box it should be twice X (although sliding sacale for colume usage). More users == more strain and support variations than a single user on some uber nutter box. Maybe when it comes to support a small premium per cpu given the slight increased coding and as such more code to go wrong due to process interaction across CPU's, beyond that the bigist fault in any error on a computer is always the user. Lets face it without the user would there be an error (think tree falling in an empty forrest ;). So no too per CPU costing and YES to per user costing.

Well without sidetracking onto how databases also have to distribute the data.... as a basic comparrision and example of prior art as a challange to what is effectivly hashing a file, who could argue. The point I was making was that it isn't anything that hasn;t already been done before, as with alot of these silly patents that IP hoarders seem to like. As for computer leasons grip, man CERT's and adverts about do you want a job in computers. I know what you mean and trust me whilst a easy on dB formulae can be fascinating I've probably dealt with enough managers/end-users to know that a simple bullit list type fact is all they generaly need/understand, alas ;(. One positive thing patents like this do actualy have a positive effect in is that they help/force people to actualy look at how things are done and alot of the time come up with something way way better, GIF/JPG/PNG and the whole compression area being the more well known one about. But as far as simply hashing files if you realy want to look at it at its most basic simplest eliment could be considered nothing more than a a rather large checkdigit or at its lowest common denominater parity checking, its nothing new. Hopefully P2P will look at this as an opertunity to push forward to the next level, but then tracing files and anonymous transfer/hashing of said files is totaly seperate issue for totaly different reasons. A combination of distibuted storage/process over a P2P network were you also had redundant backup and the ability to tag files for levels of access. thats were its going to go. bit then some would say Plan9 already pointed the way on that, and were still to outgrow Unix. Can often wonder if human evolution had gone the same way as software evolution had gone, would we be paying royalties to monkeys or would they be paying us or claiming prior art. Its a tough call and alot of hassel, mainly why alot of these patents get through and why alot of people blindly give creadance to them by just hadning over the few extra cents per use, only when we get open source does the truth run cold.

If your going to redo a format in such a way that it changes the original file in that it needs another processing stage then it is a different file and not the .jpg all apps no and love and understand. Look at the sucess JPG 2k has had oevr .jpg. Or even .PNG. Basicly soon as you stick another abstraction layer over the .jpg file it ceases to be a .jpg file. Now they are talking lossless, ie not adding any more loss in quality which is an achievement, but it aint .jpg. Basicly this is and should be viewed as a .jpg storage achieve format. With this in mind perhaps they could expand it a little so they can add to .jpg's lackings and effectivly create animated .jpg's, that would add value to what there doing, enough that people WOULD adopt it into there browsers, from there it just goes and goes. So my sugegstion would be to forget this new extension and flesh it some more so you have some timming control for slideshowing the `zipped` .jpg's and present there new format as animated .jpgs's or .jpg archive storage.
