"One school principal says that 'many students were blindsided by costs associated with text-messaging and other features, like customized ring tones" "
So its basicly the fauil t of teachers not giving the wee brats an educatuion to the standard were they can understand that little tommy's applies cost 5 cents each and if he eats 100 he will have to pay 5centsx100. Blindsided, weeding out th emorons more like. What next OMG OMG nobody told me I had to pay for petrol in my car and I was just about to drive away when I got blindsided by the police for not paying for said petrol headlines:/
So we get rid of all the wiring inside and terminated it on the outside a few doxen times instead and coat in plastic, and people get upset about mobile phone masts, boy are they in for a new shock soon when Joe Smith turns his house into a hedgehog array.
So we replace wires with wireless but double up on the amount of terminated wires (ie antenna's), cute. Aint you all glad somebody never put a RS232 on the back of a microwave oven, as I'm sure somebody would convert it into a crude basestation:)
Development of technology thru offering prizes is a cheap, politicaly sound and viable way to move forward. Basicly you end up paying for the end result not the many many hours and resources that it takes to get there. Combined with say a freelance opensource type group of developers and you have happy geeks with thinks they like doing with better odds than winning the lottery.
From a goverment persepctive it will save them money and no mad outcries of oh my god you wasted billions on that flunked project. No win no fee, cant see why there flapping about not doing it, beyond the loss of control to be nepatistic towards who wins and potential spending external to the country offering the prize (if it is indeed a glbal prize/offer). Though this could be offset with grants as they do with proffesors/higher univercity already. Still works out alot cheaper overall worst case. Look out how much it ould have cost NASA to compete with the last X-Prize, sure NASA woulda blown the winnings just on ground staff on the 1st test flight.
"(in a driving snowstorm, no less)", Hmmm, has global warming dumbed down the odd snowflake into a blizzard already.
Somebody who describes a few flakes as a driving snowstorm is hardly going to get me excited about a motor that goes up ropes.
Why not just put a pully at the top and have a bucket at each end. Given the amount of space junk we could just drop it ionto the other bucket and let it pull up the load into space =). Or perhaps wait until the other bucket fills with rain. =).
Seriously, how many lifts you know and trust in this World and they want to string us on the other end. Go back to 1000 atom bombs exploding in sequence underneath a Titanic sized spaceship, I'm sure that idea was more sturdier:D
Oh no, what will become of the global warming models books and films now if this happens. We'd like , err have to dig out the old models again.
There goes my sun drenched beach holiday in the artic, and I can like totaly forget about skiing in the equtorial parts. Darn.
So lets get this straight, I could write down some over englished definition of something vague and then as long as nobody else has been vague or the patent clerc checking the application has no common sence. I could in theory get a patent about discussing patents and charge you all commision by tea time.:D
Does prior art mean nothing in this, hell what next backdated claims to sue Columbus:/.
Perhaps a patent about issueing patents then taking the patent office to court for infringment and see them sort out this common sence/prior art monkey-fooing.
ATTENTIONL: I've just patented how to expel waste products from a bio-organ. ANYBODY having a dump will be in violation, you must all go die now.
these silly common sencse over related patent lark is an utter joke. Well sod em I'm going to make sure I violate a patent a day as my next new year resolution, sadly I probably already do that by reinventing some obscure wheel to have some. I mean if we dont have the church insisting the World is flat for numerous years and then killing people who tried to advance science we now have the lowyers with there anal rententive lets screw the World over approach.
Its crap like this that makes me respect china and any other country that pirates software, moraly wrong from a greed perspective but moraly right on a humanatarian basis.
Patent law needs a common sence clause were people can be prevented from patenting anything that 1000 monkeys couldn;t do, take that approach and you;d be left with real invention and inivation would prevail again instead of being tied up in buracratic bull.
Well can I now have me caffiene patch's on the NHS. Bout time been descriminated enough for being non smoker/ non alchoholic/non drug injecting addict but I doooo luv me caffine, too much:/
The biggest problem with any security issues is decermation of the information. This is over a week old and thats the public airing date. Given that it has been known about for over a month in closed circles then you realy have to ask were the flaw in products are. the security flaw in the first place or the un timely manner in which EVERYBODY updates. Remember in security you are only as secure as the weakest link and the bigger the setup the more links you have. Sod authenticating users and single sign n nevania's. We want distributed sign on and verification. I would love for my firewall to tell windows to update and when and for windows to tell my firewall when to sort itself out and then only have to worry about flaws in the update process:). One day we will have software that fix's itself and prevents the user form going near it, one day:D.
In the same vain as most security alerts - man has landed on the moon:-)
Given there rasiing the lake temp albiet slightly this will increase the amount of evaporation and as such the rain, all good. But what about the poor ecowarriors who will ask, all the animals it will effect and how this will impact on the lakes ecology.
Dont think of the children, think of the hippy beared 40 year old, coz there the ones that talk today not tomorrow:)
People like this are a liability, and cause suffering to many others by allowing there PC's to not only get infected with spyware and torjans but act as a platform to propergate and spam away to those that do make the effort and as such soak up loads of global bandwith. Were was this 800$ sum dirrived, I mean if you were able to add up how much of the internets bandwith was lost due to these people letting there PC@s act as gateways for the spam world etc then I'm sure they actualy cost the World alot more than that. Anything they paid for to fix the situation was a cheap deal and 800$ is a couple of new PC's, though I didn;t spot any $ values in any of these posts when i glanced thru them.
People like this are the first to moan and winge that they catch a cold, yet the first to ignorantly propergate them and believe they are the innocent. Please more tails of fools suffering, it compensates for the stress of having to stay ontop of them and makes prevention seem so much more worthwile. Remember security is as only as good as those your in touch with and on the internet your in touch with alot of fools, you just have to avoid suffering them. One day we will have a two tier internet, those who have there computers nicely dressed and in protective clothing and those that dress how they like:). Hawian shirt or a Tux, tough choice realy - hehe
hey lets report about a DDOS on xxx.com site, ew ew that site seems laggy again, could it be the/. DDOS due to the link and the report on the DDOS. Hmm I better read these links a few times, least I can do given they dont give me an official I dont care what popups/banners they have its all of non interest too me *evil grin*. AS they say, never kick a man when he's down, well given my feet are down that low and I have no desire to get a groin-strain, when should I kick em;o)
Given the new cap limits and surcharges alot of american broadband connections have impossed and increased average speed of connections. It would make only perfect sence to have the fastest spamming maching possible. Why - more spam's, more communications infrastructure utiliased the more money changing hands and...more tax's paid. There is the added bonus of not having to find out what people want and elling them. End result is a small database that fits on a PDA were FBA/NSA can instantly know if somebody is a terroist/pervert or simpsons fan. So for there faster database they generate more tax's, more comms infrastructure intilisation and a easier to manage personel details database. Lets not forget the growth in IT stocks thru the growing spam prevention markets.:>
Either that or thats a heck of an MP3 player the presedent has there.
Though when you do a comparrision that you only require a few apples too give you the energy to walk 25 miles then you see how inneficient they are in the context of people transportation.
Seeing how they made it well and truly clear that there was an issue with this pay-per month game i believe that the perpurtrators nay hackers did them a masive favour. Had a lesser moral person of the cracker type had this expliot then they would have cashed in and the effect would have been more subtle as they used it to there advantage like any game cheat does;. This in itself would have had a far more damaging effect upon players and would have cost them money. Whatt they should do now is think themselves lucky, save there legal hunt and focus on securing there product for there paying customers and offering a months compensation to all players for there incompetence in securing the product in the first place. Save you the time in calls from irate customers and would plicate the customer base and be alot cheaper in the long run.
Costs less to keep a customer than it does to loose one, as if you loose one you loose alot more though localised bad PR. Give the customers the compensation they desearve, get security guru in to secure your product and your clients interests as paying customers and live long and proser...
Given that P2P's motivation was to allow free transfer of files effeciently one can not help but feel that the motivation to share files of the warez varioty also played a major part in the growth of such approaches to file transfer.
Now that we find that P2P based websites are having a hard time due to the content they show that is available on such networks alone without even hgolding said content or offering it alone, but by mearly showing and offering the ability to select said files; Would you not feel that we are now with the level of the technology and bandwith we have available today to look at intergrating a form of web server over P2P ala WWW over P2P over IP. I suspect that it would be an interesting challange and if not for the usual lack of time and busy savingthe World I'd induldge in such a project myself. WWW over P2P would indeed offer great potential to avail cencorship but at the same time would only just raise the bar for a while. But would offer a very neat use of P2P - sort of a distributed web cache, might even get an ISP to sponsor something like that as well I suspect (AOL does have its more positive points with regards to investment of technology back into the community) - perhaps a new interface for squid would be the approach, still interesting idea and use of P2P would you not agree?
Please please please put your massive legal department together, biggest corporate legal department in the world due to the potential breakup thru monopoly laws that they undured in the USA and funnily same law that casued BELL to be broken up. BUY NOVELL and then (and this is the part I'd pay money to see happen)
SUE SCO for breach of UNIX copyright
novell is actualy worth buying and has some nice tech that would complement the IBM portfolio and also lend yet more bloat/value to Websphere.
You could make alot of money streaming and pay-per-view on that court case as well, help SCO a bit in there settlement so they wont complain and would be nice showcase of IBM's internet prowess and offer a more modern way forthe public to attend and inspect the justice system in effect as they are entitled to do.
So to summarise - IBM buy Novell and counter-sue SCO.
