Yep, I pretty much agree, polus the idea that a non-mutagenic chemical would alter someone (And their descendents) genetic code is absurd. Now, radioactive mushrooms..... Will create a 50-ft tall super human! (if 50's era sci-fi flicks have taught me anything)
Um, alrhough you mirrored the html, you left all the pic img src's = to the urls on his page, so they're still downloading from his site, and you didn't change the links to pointo to your mirror so clicking on anything directs you to his copy.... and you don't seem to have actually mirrored the images, as after sifting through the source code and finding the appropriate filenames for the actual images, http://sage.che.pitt.edu/~harrold/tmp/shu ttle/www. pdrap.org/photo_albums//columbia_disaster/cnxt0025.jpg returns a 404 not found.
Mirroring is great and all, but considering the only really important part to mirror is the full sized images, mebbe you should change your site to make those available.
Although most cells in the continuously die and are replaced, brain cells (and parts of the spinal cord) are "stuck" in a state prior to cell division, and do not replicate (well, certain types do under certain conditions, but they are a an extreme minority). So, even though your body is being continually replaced, the brain cells of an 80 year old are the same cells he/she had when born (so take care of your brain!). It is possible in the coming years that we'll be able to induce brain cells to divide and grow, allowing things like the "brain grafts", but I would argue that "you" are defined mainly by the specific interconnections of your brain, and more specifically the interconnections in certain parts of the brain (most peoples visual cortices behave in similar ways, while other parts clearly differ and give rise to your unique personality). To define yourself as not being "you" because part of your brain has changed is oversimplified, while a person's personality is the sum of all their parts, and changing any part does effect the whole, its not so much that you stop being who you are and start being someone else but rather that who you are changes to a greater degree than the way who you are changes every day.
lol, thanks, i copied it off someone else so i'll be sure to pass along the kudos if i ever remember who:)

Not really, DNA is very much a source code, it must be "compiled" by other molecules to create working a working program (life) or run subroutines (proteins). RNA is interesting in that it can self-replicate without the need for other parties. All in all, I'd have to say RNA/DNA is much more elegant and intelligent than other coding languages.
No, you're wrong. While the speed of light IN A VACUUM is a constant (3E8 m/s), the speed light travels through a medium is not constant, and finding ways to let light travel in any medium faster is useful.
I never understood exactly how the world in Mad Max -> the world in Road Warrior. I thought mad max was extremely cool in its depiction of a society thats been gutted - there are still so many vestiges and many people still live "normal" lives, i.e. get up, go to work, buy food & store, etc. The Road Warrior's future just seemed kind of silly, there were like 10 ppl left in a desert fighting, i never understood why they didnt go some place else, like some place that could be farmed (and perhaps didnt have roads for the bad guys to use). Seemed much less believable than the first one. And beyond thunderdome sucked donkey balls. Dear god was it bad. It suscked so much I cant go into detail because Ive suppressed the memory. If they make another like that itll be worthless, if they make something along the lines of the road warrior or, better yet, mad max, then i'll see it.
wow, for some reason AC's have pretty much summarized my thoughts on this matter. I still think it will be tricky, but I think this guy's thoughts are the issue are valid, and the same filters we use for other products (movies, TV, magazines, etc.) will be used but with a cutoff of "G" or something similar.
But this is exactly why I'm worried about interoperability with other countries, as many European nations have very different views on what is ok for children to see, especially with regards to sexuality. I'd hate for the internet that kids see to be entirely determined by the US Gov, although any proper parenting should include guided exploration of other countries' thoughts and websites.
It'll probably be a continuing battle as these kinds of issues arise, just another reason why civil liberty / freedom of speech organizations (and their efforts) are so important : )
I was about to post this response. Giving parents more options & making it easier on them is never a bad idea. And clearly, nothing will prevent poor parenting from fscking up a kid. But given that even the best parents do not have an unlimited amount of time/energy to devote to their kids, and legislation like this can help them use that time more efficiently. I hope that continuing legislation allows for.kids.uk,.kids.de, etc., although I have a feeling we're going to run into some major "what should kids be allowed to see?" issues, even within.kids.us
I was just going through these posts to spend some of my mod points, and I was astounded at how few people had even given a cursory glance at the article. Unlike other experiments, which involve forcing existing atmospheric moisture (clouds) to precipitate into rain, the equipment proposed would actually add and create clouds from seawater. This is very different in effect, as it won't be taking moisture away from anyone else, but will rather just add a great deal of moisture to the whole region, which of course could have serious effects, both positive & negative.
I wonder what they're doing with all the salt.... it would build up wherever the water evaoporates, mebbe at the misting site? Seems like introducing that much salt into an area would be a problem.

The Sims is pretty cool, but I've always been a bigger fan of Sim City (I think 2000 was the best so far). Now, if they could somehow combine that with the Sims online, I'd be hooked. Imagine designing and administrating a city populated by "real" people. So much fun..... and I promise I would restrain from causing disasters via the disaster button.... most of the time. Hrm, we'd need a new drug-reference analogy to replace the likes of "Evercrack". What's more addictive than crack???
I'd say that 2 fast Athlon MP's (or XP's that take about 3 seconds to mod for SMP) are still going to be significantly faster for anything that can take advantage of multithreading. I don't know what tasks you have in mind, but with the price/performance ratio of dual Athlons, I can't imagine that Intel uniprocessor systems will be able to compete for some time. Of course, benchmarks wil really tell, I'd suggest 2cpu (http://www.2cpu.com) for more info, the forums are also filled with people who possess a great deal more knowledge than I do about system performance, esp. concerning multiple CPUs.
Damn, forgot to end the italic tag after that first sentance. It's my fault for hitting submit instead of preview, but i'll be damned if Plain Old Text isn't still the best option.
So, why not just add the 2GB to your main RAM?
Because I only have so many RAM slots, and my motherboard uses Registered ECC DDR ram that costs enough that I currently only have 512mb. But PC133 or similar SDRAM is very cheap, and I'd love a way to be able to use some, mebbe give it to Photoshop or 3DSMAX's swap file that are not system-critical. Granted, with the pricing of this card, budgetary concerns are pretty much null, but I see no reason someone can't make a PCI device for 512mb sticks of PC133 SDRAM for ~$60 each into my system, since 2gb for ~$300 would be of huge performance value for things like Photoshop or 3DSMAX. To get that much main system ram would cost me ~$1000.
