I think one of the biggest costs come from the fact that every one wants to put people up there.

So you have to have all this testing etc, failsafe components reg aproval etc etc.

I think the nongovernment space hackers should concentrate on sending satelites before they start thinking about sending people.

It should be cheaper it could get them some bussines, and it will give them valuable experience.

why the x-price is asking for launching of people i dont know - they risk fatality and that will hurt amateur space efforts a lot.

by the way while a flash of brilliance may seem unlikely i wouldnt discount it. Hey a ram engine is mostly a hollow tube right? Some smart guy in a garage might figure out how those work.

If it was an operational shuttle $6 mill would way too little to ask for it.

During the testing of buran several early prototypes were made. Some were just an empty shell and were used to test the rigidity of the structure. The one thats a coffee house in leningrad is one of those.

Others were actually used for flight testing, that is they could flyintheatmosphere, but still were not space capable. You can tell them apart because they have jet engines bolted on to them.

So yeah the space shutlle in question is certainly one of those models.

Sci fi has been hot in movies for a long time and what do we have to show for it - several big budget movies that are complete crap (men in black independance day, that arnold thing, phantom menace etc.) with one medium budget movie that is not that bad (the matrix).

And even though sci fi movies were hot Douglas Adams did not live to see a Hitchikers movie.

Good sci fi gets written not because its on bestsellers lists but because people that write it love doing it.

Working models were required. Right now they arent but there still is an enablement requirement.

And if the invention does not work the patent cannot pass the enablement requirement. So invention that do not work should not be given patents. Patent examiners are supposed to understand from the description if the invention will work or not. If they dont understand they can ask for inspections, or just deny the patent application.

Unfortunately you have to wonder if today the patent office is able or willing to really check whether the inventions will actually work.

And i am not really blaming examiners. The way they are organized they are required to examine an application in several hours, and it is pretty much impossible to do what is required in that time.
