  1. Unsubscribing on DoubleClick Gets Into Spam · · Score: 1

Not only are so,me unsubscribe links fake, but often when you send an unsubscribe email, they take it and realize there is a live person reading mail on the other end and start sending you more spam.

    So even unsubscribing is dangerous.

By the way all the opt in email things i have ever seen only say "would you like to recieve our newsletter, or some mentions of special deals from us". They NEVER say "would you like to recieve mail from every one we decide to sell this address to.

There is a huge problem with this statement:
"But there's also a lot of promotional mail that YOU OPTED INTO whether you realize it or not."

So you think it is ok for people to give up their privacy rights because they didnt realize something? Most contracts are invalid if one of the parties did not intend to enter them, or did not know they were entering them.

And i know companies that would sell your email address make sure that the text where it says "we will sell your email" is in a place where no one will check.

Oh yes and then there are the ones that say "our privacy policy may change so chack periodicaly"

  2. Roads are subsidized too much on Every Road a Toll Road · · Score: 1

A bad result of that is the use of a fairly inefficient mode of transportation. If roads were not subsidized at all or recieved subsidies similar to those for other modes for transportation, we would use the most efficient and cheap way to get around - which will probably involve trains. So i think some kind of use tax on roads should be made. Of course that does not mean that people should surrender their privacy for that purpose. A gas tax is sufficient.

And the third, most dangerous thing is that they could use it to blackmail you. That seems ridiculous right now, but keep in mind that they will have this information always and forever. What looks ridiculous now may seem normal after 20 years. And all the information will still be around. Eventually many Microsoft clients will really mind if there is information about them downloading porn out there.

The FSGS (free starcraft game server) was always out there. Nevertheless blizzard made a killing on starcraft. Its true some people used the free servers to play pirated games online, but people that liked the game eventually bought it. Most people that use the free servers actually own the game, but prefer those servers to battle net for various reasons. There are FSGS servers for more skilled players, there are FSGS servers for people in different countries, where connection to battlenet is slow, some people start FSGS servers only for their friends etc. So every body wins. Consumers start their own FSGS servers that are better suited for their needs, and Blizzard does not have to pay for the support for thousands of gamers that would have gone to battlenet otherwise.

And of course when they pointed out the EU they did not mention that the EU does not have the constitutional constraints we have. Conformity with EU is a kind of a pointless issue, because this is not a situation, like technical standards for example, where there is some expected benefit from conformity. Thats like asking to bring the American health care or well fare systems in conformity with the europeans. The so called "Sunny Bono Act" extends copyrights for works that are already existing. Now the people that created these works obviously did not need that 20 year extention as an incentive to create them. In fact that extra 20 years is quite pointless, even for people creating right now. I mean how in the world would any one know wheather your work will be worth squat 20 years after 70 years after the day you die. Thats like between 100- 150 years for most people. You cannot even be sure that people will be cinsuming the same kind of art forms after 150 years. And certainly you will not get a corporation to pay you anything extra for those extra twenty years. Now you think that you should have ownership rights to your works in perpetuity, not only for incentive reasons but for moral ones. Because you created them your grandchildren should own them etc, etc. Well you are free to have that opinion but that is clearly unconstitutional. Congress only has the power to give those right for a limited time. And if congress decides to extend that period indefinately it will not be for a limited time. I think there are good reasons behind this constitutional rule, and it should be given power and not scuttled.
