    Yes, there was a lot of marketing bullshit with the launch of the Shuffle, but it wasn't a bad product at all. All it needs is a way to support multiple playlists, for example with a "skip playlist" mode or button, so that you can navigate more easily between songs. There should be no need for a display to achieve this. It is a good thing to be able to navigate songs without taking the player out of your pocket.

    I'm still waiting for someone to develop a true combination of wiki and forum; maybe it's out there and I just haven't seen it yet, but I think neither extreme really does the job of the other well. A combination, maybe of wiki-type pages with attached discussion forums, would be best, and the two are really complementary, not exclusive.
    I'm not a MediaWiki user, but isn't that what their "discussion" tab is for? One could imagine running a forum using MediaWiki where each new thread corresponds to a new wiki page, but with the "discussion" tab used as the front by default. As contributions are made to the discussions, posters can record them in the actual wiki page under the "article" tab. This would also have the added benefit of easy creation and maintenance of links between various threads.

He is out to get the bad guy and the real problem is that the most effective ways are denied to him because of political correctness.
    Profiling is definitely happening. Yes, everybody goes through the security gates, but the more thorough searches on "random" passengers happen all the time.

    It's fine and dandy that Microsoft is re-compiling the Excel source with larger values for the MAX_ROWS and MAX_COLS constants. But there's no technical reason why such fixed limits should still even exist anymore. Can't they devise a way to allow spreadsheets to be limited in dimensions only by the available resources of the machine? Or will we have to wait and buy Office 2010 to get the ability to have 32,000 columns instead of just 16,000?
    I guess they wouldn't want files created given one machine's resources to be unpredictably unopenable on another machine. With a fixed value they can specify the minimum resource requirements for installing Excel that guarantee any file to be usable anywhere.

    Well, I've been unhappily using Yahoo! Calendar for about 5 years now. I say unhappily because it has swallowed some of my events, it often shows up as "unavailable" on My Yahoo!, and that My Yahoo! Calendar component often ignores some events that are there when you actually get to the Calendar. Getting to the calendar is also also a pain as every day it prompts me to login again for extra security. I'm glad there is now another option, and Yahoo! might just finally lose my patronage now that Google provides that last app that I was still dependent on with Yahoo! I just need to see how the Calendar component looks on Google's Personalized Home Page (if that even exists).

  18. Now that everybody's managed to freak you out... on Learning to DJ? · · Score: 2, Interesting

    ...some advice from someone who DJ'ed for fun. Part of the fun of DJing is the exhibitionism that comes with it. You want to show off your music taste while keeping your audience entertained. The two might clash if you're not careful!

    I'd say don't worry too much about the technical ability at first, just play stuff you like at parties and such. Create a podcast or whatever they call them these days. Or create radio shows and have them hosted online. Publicize your creations! Get your mom, your friends, your neighbors or whoever else to tune in and listen. If they like what you do they'll brag about it. If you're good and/or having fun there should be some following, and at the same time you've built up a small portfolio. Now head to some small trendy new bar that is compatible with your taste and style, and show them what you have. Like every other job it's the experience that'll get you hired. From there you can make your way up if that's what you want, and that'll give you plenty of time to hone your craft in the meantime. But in my case, this is as far as I got, and I was happy that way.

    I started by DJing at friends' parties (well, as the resident nerd I wasn't gonna flirt with the chicks the straighforward way, so I had to find a way not to get bored at parties, while playing the music I liked and maybe getting some attention). Later on I headed to the local community radio station, got a regular gig there, and finally got a regular gig at a local bar (psychedelic music, indie rock and some trip-hop in my case, no scratching or crazy mixing involved). That was a blast, I earned some pocket money and free beer and yes I even managed to score once that way! Once I finished my studies I had to get a real job and that was it as far as I was concerned (well I did a bit of internet radio for a while, but I just didn't have the time and motivation anymore). Good memories...

    Anyway, my point is, don't let the other posters here freak you out. You can DJ with a laptop and a cheap MP3 player if that's all you got (all the software you need can be found for free). Just start with a small audience and as you get better your audience will grow and so will your budget and equipment. That's the DIY ethic I would have expected the slashdotters to show you.

  19. Re:AspectJ on Build Your Own Java Performance Profiling Tool · · Score: 1

    This probably won't compile, but just to give you an idea of how you could reproduce in AspectJ what the guy did in the article:

    aspect ProfileAll {
        pointcut myMethod(): execution(* *(..)); //basically, affect all methods

        before(): myMethod() {
            System.out.println(thisJoinPointStaticPart.getSign ature() + "/tstart/t" + System.currentTimeMillis());  //print this before the execution of the method
        }
        after(): myMethod() {
            System.out.println(thisJoinPointStaticPart.getSign ature() + "/tend/t" + System.currentTimeMillis()); //print this after the execution of each method
        }
    }

    The above looks much simpler in my opinion, but maybe injecting bytecode somehow skews the profiling information less than doing so by injecting source code?

    I was about to mention this too! I was terribly disappointed by David Lynch's version, I saw it when it came out in 1984. Kyle McLachlan was just too one-dimensional as the hero, and you know there's something wrong with the movie when you end up rooting for the evil guy (Sting looked so cool!).

    Having said that, I was only 14 then. I just saw parts of the movie recently, and if you forget that it is supposed to be an adaptation of Dune and just watch it as a David Lynch movie, with all the bizarre atmosphere stuff, it kinda works.

    Jodorowsky + Moebius + Pink Floyd doing Dune would have been quite something though... sigh...
