  2. Re:Sorry Melinda on iPhone 3.0 Software Announced · · Score: 1

You miss the point of the iPhone completely. It whips the ass off Windows Mobile because of its seamless integration. Everything Just Works. There's the AppStore, right there, so you have a one-stop-shop to get all the add-on goodness you could possibly want - no more web-trawling to find a half-baked PoS app. The thing shifts to landscape because it can feel that's what you want - no pressing buttons or configuring. The network knows you'd prefer to use WiFi rather than 3G so it connects silently and pumps your data that way.
The iPhone is the most 'personal' personal computing device I've ever used and hands down wipes the floor with Windows Mobile, even despite the feature limitations. I just ditched my Windows Mobile 6.1 device and haven't looked back.

If you'd actually listened to some of the (admittedly small amount of) material available on SACD then you'd realise that the high cost and format lock-in are small prices to pay for an extraordinary step forwards in high-fidelity music. SACDs sound phenomenal compared to vanilla CDs.

Yes, but if you sample a 400Hz sine wave at 810Hz you do not get perfect reproduction. In fact you end up reducing the amplitude of the original 400Hz signal and introducing a 10Hz component too. *that's* why the super-high frequency formats are important.

  7. Re:As things go ... on How Feds are Dropping the Ball on IPv6 · · Score: 1

But what happens in 2011 when a company decides to provide internet access for its users. It needs an IPv4 address in order for it's internet gateway to route its traffic out to the internet so that all it's internal users (IPv4 or v6, doesn't matter) can access the internet. But there's no more v4 addresses for the company so they can't provide the gateway service.

Will we see an emergence of gateway services from 3rd-party vendors which are effectively super-NATs that provide NAT-ing services for multiple organizations at once? That would also require that all inbound services (Web, email, VPN etc) also pass through another 3rd-party simply to gain v4 presence.

Can we make sure they're connected via PCI-Express rather than PCI please? PCI is just too slow. I used a solid-state disk that plugged into the PCI bus a while ago and didn't get the expected performance improvements. Good ol' RAM-disks worked tho because they weren't limited by PCI.

Have you heard the CD version on the SACD release of DSOTM? It sounds *awesome* and just shows (a) how good the original recording was, and (b) what a phenomenal job can be done when mastering for CD these days.

  11. This is what the music industry needs on The "Loudness War" and the Future of Music · · Score: 1

With CD sales haemorrhaging the music industry needs something to prop up sales. So why not actually get behind SACD/DVD-Audio and give us truly high-fidelity recordings that are mixed for dynamic range? CDs can then be left as source for MP3s / car stereos while the hifi version can command a premium and give us a reason to shell out our hard-earned on the premium format. But *please* let's make sure they mix hifi disks to -18db to ensure a consistent amount of headroom.

  12. Music = disposable, so value of CD retail cost on Is the CD Becoming Obsolete? · · Score: 1

The problem for the music labels is that music is now a disposable item. As the size of music collections has increased, the perceived value of each item in that collection has reduced. If my collection is 10-times the size, each item is worth one-tenth the amount. Therefore the street-value today of one album is about $1.50 and hence AllOfMP3.com became hugely successful because they charged to the perceived value of the music being purchased.

Personally I do have a decent home stereo and would buy SACD/DVDA material if it made sense. But there's next to no material available in these formats, so I don't intend to crash the cash on the hardware.
