May I as ask how in fact my comments were offtopic?

Is someone playing free and loose with the Mod points?

    Seriously,

The article in question is about using computers to record music, something I have been doing for years, yet I would like to do it in Linux.

How is my post discussing this very thing OFFTOPIC?

Someone must be smoking some kickass crack............

    Great Idea,

However, when can we expect something reasonably user-friendly and easy to install in Linux?

I just installed Slackware 9.1, and my goal is to wean myself off of Microsoft Products at the earliest opportunity.

The problem I am facing is that since I record music on my computer, and simply cannot afford a Powerbook, I am relegated to using WindowsXP.

I attempted to get started on Slack last night, by installing Jack, Rosegarden, and some other stuff.

Well, I am missing MAJOR amounts of libs needed to run Rosegarden, and the tarball of Jack couldn't be more arcane in it's build instructions.

    Anyway,

    I guess I am posing a question/challenge:

    Can anyone help?

Keep in mind that though I am a Linux newbie, I am not afraid to get my hands dirty and compile software, edit config files, etc.

Would that in any way be similar to NVidia's binary Detonator Unified driver?

Does Nix need the driver to be specific, or is there a general NVidia Linux driver that is all-inclusive?

    Well put.

I would by any stretch of the imagination be called a "newbie", and rightly so, because a lot of Linux just flies over my head, which is why I have stuck to winxp.

However, I remember at one time a year or two ago having installed bigslack on a win98 system, and from the time I booted to the command line, manually configuring my nic, video, and sound was easy as fucking hell, just uncomment a line, edit a line, save the file, and I was in business.

I still can't install and run any other distro as easy and as well as I can Slackware.

    Oh Yeah?

So I 'm wrong because I run Windows XP, simply because I need to be able to run audio production software and anything Linux has to offer is either out to pasture or so arcane I would need an army of scientists and a library to install a simple midi sequencer?

Not attacking you, or your point, but this is a matter of MAJOR frustration for me, especially when Windows is as insecure as it is.

    I would love to switch.

Here's a recent example of what happened to me.

I read about Turn Key Linux Audio, which is a package of bianries and scripts for making your Mandrake box a Pro Audio box, so I spent hours downloading the Mandrake Isos, burned em, and installed.

First issue was this spurious interrupt 8259a Irq 7 nonsense. In the install AND boot process, it hangs for a long time, then boots just fine, but the system was just slow and buggy anyway.

Then I went to install the Turn Key stuff. Lo and behold, it's offline for retooling!!

So I pretty much just yanked the HD out of the box and run Windows.

That whole spurious interrupt 8259a IRQ7 thing happens after the boot process gives a timeout on my 60 gig Seagate.

I cannot even boot most distros with that hard disk in the box, including all of the live cd distros.

    Well,

    So much for Linux.

Though I'll be back later to give it another go, when it grows up.

Would that kind of comment be acceptable if these children were black, or asian, native, or mexican?

The kids were stupid, no doubts there.

But to simply conclude that because someone is from a certain geographical location, and a certain socio-economic status, that it is ok for us to mock them and conclude that they are somehow defective, and assume that their parents were brother and sister, or otherwise messed up seems to me to be a little hypocritical.

If, for the sake of argument, the perps had been black, would it have been socially acceptable for me to say:

"What else do you expect from the projects except for all the little monkeys running around unsupervised, with weapons. I mean, this is what happens when they momma be only 14!"

Racist is racist, no matter what.

It depends on your definition of "better". Why is it that so many people seem to think that "art" is only worth something when and if it breaks into the "mainstrean" and makes lots and lots of money? Go to a nightclub sometime. Here in Seattle, every single night of the week, every single day of the year, I can go see any number of live shows played by people who do it because they love music. Indie guitarists better than Hendrix or Vaughan? Ever heard of Marc Ribot?

The reason: experience. You can spend five years learning how to pipe foie gras mousse onto melba toast and somehow still not know how to make simple Club Sandwich.

My advice to potential cooks? Don't waste your time at school unless your goal is to open your own five star.

Although I personally find the SCA to be silly, I find it equally if not more silly that some anonymous jerkoff behind a computer keyboard has the time to criticize and to mock the imaginary or real sexuality of those with whom he has never met in real life, and furthermore, I personally know SCA people, including career military men and women, who could probably thrash your sorry little punk ass and leave you in a sobbing heap of emotional wreckage and broken teeth. Besides, you got something against fags? I have often found in life that those who criticize and hate others only hate something which is a personal reflection of their character.

No native SF2 support? how many different sound servers for my soundblaster? How in the hell do I make midi work? Linux may be good for many things, but I believe it will remain the tool of a few IT Pros and the toy of many a geek hobbyist. Nothing wrong with that, as many geeks seem to absolutely loath and despise new people encroaching on their scene. Not that I am opposed to running a 'nix for my audio solutions, it's just that it ain't there yet, and may not be for quite a few years.

I do have a problem with the idea that somehow their lifestyle was more perfect than our American lifestyle. Naives are human, as are we all. They are no more or less noble in character or spirit than anyone, anywhere, in any time and in any context. The Natives in America killed their enemies, probably raped, stole, lied and cheated. So did Whites, so has everyone through history. You may be right, partially, in this context. However, the blame game needs to end, in order for the human race to heal and begin evolving. Period.
