Exactly. Another way to put this that I've heard and liked is: The customer is not always right. But the customer is always the customer.

From one of the PCMag articles:
Microsoft has included a programmatic interface for Windows Firewall that allows an application to do things like set FirewallEnabled to FALSE, add itself to the list of AuthorizedApplications, or change the configuration of GloballyOpenPorts. Our concern here is that a malicious application could turn off Windows Firewall or, more likely, mark itself as an authorized application. Corporate administrators can disable some or all local configurations, which will prevent programs from making changes; but ultimately, Microsoft maintains, individuals still have to be smart about what apps they run. Even the best deadbolt won't protect your house once you've let the bad guys in.

I agree with PCMag on this. Microsoft still doesn't get it. To continue the Microsoft analogy, they gave the bad guys a key to the deadbolt.

Looks like I'll be continuing to ignore the built in firewall in favor of a real one.

My parents still use their StarMax 3000/160MT, and it's an interesting beast. The Tanzania motherboard was initially used only in the clones, but Apple eventually used it in the Power Mac 4400. It was designed to be used with standard PC components, and included PS2 mouse and keyboard ports in addition to ADB. The motherboard and System Enabler even supported manual eject floppy drives, though Motorola used an auto eject drive. At the time my parents bought it, the other option under consideration was the Power Mac 6360.

It is possible for anti-virus software to detect unknown viruses by monitoring for suspicious activity. Several viruses for classic Mac OS were file infectors that attached themselves to an existing application on your machine. Thus, you don't need to have specific rules to catch these viruses, you simply monitor for and alert on attempts to write to files of type APPL.
