on a similar note, the department of energy now estimates that we should have fusion plants in operation within the next 30 years. Unfortunately, they've had that same 30 year estimate since about 1950.....
the problem, at least from the RIAA's perspective, comes when the folks who are "sharing" the sampler MP3s of Slimy Joe & the Horn Toed Lizards decide that "what the heck, maybe I should 'share' Brittany's album too"--the extra $20k that BigMusicCompany makes from Slimy Joe doesn't even come close to making up for the $20million that they didn't make on the Brittany album--which is why they're suing people.
ps--I kind of like SJ&THTL as the name for a C&W band--consider it copyrighted. Use it and I'll sue your ass!
don't give up your day job for a career in heat transfer...
A large surface area (e.g., the sides and top of the acquarium) makes an efficient device for convective heat transfer to the room air. The mineral oil would certainly get warmer than the room air, but it would stay well below the temp of the PC components.
Given sufficient motivation, the steady state value can be calculated within a fraction of a degree. Lacking that motivation, however, a reasonable approximation is that the acquarium would be less than 10C above room temp.
The Wright amendment has largely outlived its original purpose, but it was entirely sucessful relative to its original intent.
At the time the amendment was adopted (about the time DFW was built) the goal was to force airline traffic out to the newer airport. There were a number of reasons for this--paying off the bonds on DFW being the principal one, but noise concerns at Love were also (and remain) a significant consideration.
The harm with this is that it diminishes my viewing experience. Tivo is attempting to sell my attention span, and I'm not amused.
To me, this is analagous to the ads that movie theaters have been playing in recent years--I'm suddenly the captive audience for a commercial, and I DON'T like it. Not coincidentally, I used to spend a great deal more money than I now do at the movies.
I seek out advertising free zones in my life, and it's always sad to see another one passing away.
they had a BIG grant from the NSF that allowed them to put in and administer those clusters...and an army of very good sys-admins that kept them running.
not exactly a good model for an underfunded bunch of PIII's administered by somebody who is relying on "ask slashdot" for technical advice
improving your error rate by turning the machine off is easy if you're wrong with high enough frequency....

a few million people buying a couple extra CDs because of MP3s doesn't make sense as a business model--a single Brittany album sells more than that.
Study or not, your math doesn't even come close to adding up.
Having bought two CDs in the last five years is not exactly a great example of the market power that can be unleashed by "sharing" music...
You might want to reconsider your premise.
might want to brush up on your history--the Romans didn't manage to conquer Scotland
I got my high school athletic letter in chess you insensitive clod...
(all too true....)
complete agreement--except substitute "theft" for most instances of "share"
what exactly is a "minor celebrity pool player"?
is it something like "minor celebrity hair dresser" or "minor celebrity cab driver" ??
you need oxygen to start a fire.... as long as the hot component isn't exposed to the oil AND the air, he's fine
(which isn't to say that it's a good idea...)

Somehow I imagine this happened before you were wearing long pants--but the IBM PC was an open spec.

Southwest can fly into DFW all they want. The restriction is on Love Field, Dallas's "downtown" airport.
wasn't asking for sympathy....just lamenting another small deterioration of a service that I'm fond of

ahh.. you must be comfortably wealthy-- or, more likely, childless and blowing smoke.
SSN's are required to get the tax deduction for your children
ah, but it's on philosophical grounds that I do fault him....
There's no god given right to HBO that Comcast is infringing on. If you don't like the price, then don't watch it, or go buy a satellite dish.
Trading your integrity for "free" HBO is selling yourself pretty cheap....
no, they can't get the electrons back.
On the other hand, in most states, they can send him to prison if they catch him
ok, so Comcast is charging more than you like.
That makes it OK for you to be a thief?
It was going to be a dupe, but the editors decided to skip yesterday's version just to confuse you
I was at MIT in the mid 90's too--

here's a hot tip--the users in a computer cluster do not own their own computer, and anybody that gave a cluster user root access would be certifiable
