Its hard to figure out what has caused the difference. Is there more competition here ? I read once about a price cap. The lack of competition in the US may appear to be the most liekly answer.
This system was designed for low power consumption. I believe the clock speed was intentionally lowered to have a higher speed/power ratio per processor. The reason for this is that power usage over lifetime of the system can be more than hardware costs. This makes for a lower cost per speed-lifetime unit. They made important technical changes in design.
What this extra speed is used for is important. But it is a separate issue.

One example. Microsoft notepad. Ever try really use that for things ? Word wrapping INSERTS CARRIAGE RETURNS instead of making it simply looked wrapped like any other editor I have ever used. Change window shape -> gets messed up. Microsoft isnt that incompetent. Its by design. I BET this was to get people to use word.doc files for even the simplest things to lock people into word. Most people wont go search for another text editor. That is what the profit motive got us there.
Not that I agree, but it points to something interesting. They are focusing on security in this release. Security was the key thing specifically excluded from their "consent decree": they could do what ever they wanted in this area.
So would the people who put this out be thrilled to have electric cars that get powered by nuclear power ? Yeah I understand the point that the oil will run out.
If true it sends a signal. They currently dont have a quantum computer (and therefore expect no one else does or will in a reasonable amount of time). However I do remember seeing a standard created to do a form of digital signatures only with conventional encryption (which is not in general "breakable" by quantum computers like "hard problem" public key cryptography).
Why cant they make a digital SLR for $300 like they can for film SLR ? (standard changable lenses is the goal in my book) My bet is patents on stupid things. There are real inovations in digital cameras, but I have a good one (Cannon A40 2MP) for $300. Why cant they just do the same in the SLR form. Has to be stupid patents.
To be really careful about security, I turn Active X off on all sites except a few. I get that annoying "This site may not display properly...." message and cant get rid of it (Microsoft dosent want me to not use Active X remember) Now -users- of Active X will have it just as bad or worse it appears.
The only way this makes sense is if you say equivalent solar panel will cost 40c per watt (and all the solar efficiency / 20 year amortization is hidden). But it is unclear that is what they mean or if they screwed up.
And further the suns effective intensity even with changing the angle of the panels varys greatly throughout the day. So the total energy produced over twenty years is unclear. Its not just 1 watt * (number of hours in 20 years)
Its currently vaporware of course. (And see my comment about cnn's story using 20c / watt which means nothing to me) But if it really becomes 1/2 cost of oil, sell your energy stocks and watch for middle east termoil.
Power companies provide at about 15c per kilowatt-HOUR. What does 20c per watt mean ? Meaning running continuously 12 hrs a day for 20 years ? Watt is a power unit. Watt-hours is energy.

By the way does anyone know if any of these disk encryption systems keep bit flipping (not function) the key so that reading a "hot" dram is a less effective hardware attack ? Or even better any product which encrypts dram like proposed in:http://www.w4g.org/ee565.html
Modern hard drives have commands "SECURITY ERASE" and "ENHANCED SECURITY ERASE". Search for those terms and hdparm on google. Also below is a link to the quality of the erasure. Note: these will erase even bad "mapped out" sectors. Enhanced erase will even go off track + and minus which erases the edges. atapwd.zip does regular erase (search).

The thing that makes feel good about google is that it is a company that is so driven by what tech people think would be useful to people rather than by MBA marketer types who seem to want popups and cluttered image filled pages. Employees spend 1/3 of their time just creating new wild ideas. I wish I was good enough to work there.
I use opera some. The best thing about it is the magnification works on an entire page not just fonts. But, the occasional java exploits are a problem. You cant control java -by site- in opera.
I have never gotten a virus with xp. Never even even had one come up in a virus scan. But, I do all the right things like use a firewall and autoupdate. I also do things no one else does like use IE security settings and turn -everything- (java, activex) for all but say 40 sites on the net. This last step is just far too much work even for expert users (esp with that stupid site may not display properly dialog for ActiveX). Further it is just beyond the typical home XP user.

Also, part of my point was that even though you can do alot to secure microsoft software, its not something the typical user can/will do.
