Are you arguing against the idea of convict-specific punishment, or against the idea of criminal deterrence? If you're against convict-specific punishment, as it appears you are from your post, then I suppose you also oppose such things as house arrests, prison sentences, and parole. Each of those bans convicts from doing things most normal people are allowed.
I oppose convict specific bans that extend past the end of the prison sentence. Banning an ex-con from a common, otherwise legal activity is overly harsh and usually difficult to enforce. An internet ban is materially different from banning a convicted swindler from handling large amounts of money, as the internet ban restricts a large number of activities not related to the crime. To take an extreme example, I believe mitnick's ban could be interpreted as restricting him from using an ATM or a cellphone. How'd you like to live life in the USA with that sort of restriction?
I'm confused about why a basic app (either something written in BASIC language or meaning 'essential - low level') won't run on new hardware.
Most likely, it won't run on WinXP.
If the Windows PC is run with the 'cmd' program, it makes a DOS screen. Doing Alt-Enter makes the system look and feel like 286-era DOS, only running 30 times faster.
Nope. It resembles DOS, but it's different. Eventually, stuff specific to DOS may be dropped. Anyway, it's nice to have some support for your accounting software, don't you think?
The proprietary hardware, lack of open source software (even worse than on Windows), lawsuit-happy Apple, and dumbed down straight jacket like Mac OS operating system (before they used a BSD core) are reasons.
Way to ignore the last 3 years. OSX runs pretty much all the things that BSD does, and Photoshop too. I like linux because it works - I'm not going to demand that someone supply me with apps for free.
When I worked for a major airline, the flight planning system I supported and helped enhance was written in Fortran and running on a Unisys 2200 mainframe (which is an older architecture but also a fairly reliable and *modern* platform in terms of its actual hardware).
But this isn't a mainframe, with its reliable architecture and a source of parts, it's a 286 running a basic app that no longer runs on new hardware - one power surge and they're screwed.
Were I your parent, I wouldn't allow you to drive unless gps was turned on (assuming, of course, that I had any reason to believe such monitoring was warranted). And the additional punishment for lying (which is effectively what you'd be doing by turning it off, IMO) would be severe.
It's interesting to me that yours is indicative of the general response here. Makes me wonder what happened to "parenting".
I sure am glad you weren't my parent. Whatever happened to trusting your kids?
These things are still going to be copied by folks (like terrorists) who find it worth the money to fake an ID.
So, underage terrorists are going to fake my id to get into bars? Why not just get real IDs? If an illegal farm worker can do it, surely a well funded arab can.
With things like closets and yards people don't even have to be organized. They can keep everything they want and find it quickly and easily.
Nowadays, your disk array isn't a closet, or even a yard. it's a fucking warehouse. Even if i never threw anything away, i'd be hard-pressed to run out of space on my lowly 60G drive. If I ever did, 160G disks are cheap.
I'm confused. Are you claiming that today's current fission reactors operate at 100 million degrees? Or are you claiming that fusion only occurs at 100 million degrees?
If you RTFA, it states that they are planning to run the next phase of fusion reactors at 100M degrees.
Most of those examples are a result of us provoking a response. Of the ones I am familiar with, the only exception was Germany in 1941. They declared war on us because they were allied with Japan.
In 1812, we invaded Canada and got our ass kicked. in the 1890's, I believe that we had a throw-down over california. The 1917 telegram was a forgery, as i recall. In the 90s, Europe unified its currency to compete with us economically. Not much rivalry there. Just recently, Chirac and Schroeder responded to their citizens' outrage over GWB and his crusade against Iraq.
I never could understand why Raven was outside the Black Sun in the first place--it just seems so out of character for him to be trying to infect programmers.
What are you talking about? He wanted to nuke the USA, and what better way than to kill the talent.
North Dakota and South Dakota both consistently rank high on things like test scores, graduation rates, but rank at the bottom of spending on a per pupil basis.
That's because the kids there are highly motivated to get an education and a good job in some other state.
BSD Sockets (Winsock on Win32). Ever noticed that socket programming on UNIX and Win32 are extremely similar? Not a co-incidence.
The API is similar because it works and it was there. Why is that sigfnigficant and how does it imply BSD sogftware in the guts?

There's more than one way to stop crime - just because shops don't all have armed security guards doesn't mean criminalizing robbery is futile.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't robbery illegal gfor everybody? Banning only applies to the banned.
The UNIX-based duplication systems used in manufacturing are impervious to MS-DOS-based, Windows- based, and Macintosh-based viruses.
It would appear that they chose Unix so that they wouldn't have to deal with viruses infecting the distribution media.

Separate simulations using different process parameters can be run at the same time on separate machines, if you have enough software licenses.
I thought that simulations of these levels typically required several (dozen) machines for hours or days.
That said, speeding isn't something I particularly care about, as long as it isn't to the extent that it would be considered reckless.
Seeing as how she's 4, I would think that her driving in the fist place would be cause for alarm.

Hey, glad you like it.
Funnily enough in the last 5 years I have not seen a single bird hit any of my windows.
How about your hood scoop?

The problem is that there are two countries who want to have it: France and Japan.
So build two. $5B isn't a lot of money on a national scale.

Problem is when your kids are the ones with cell phones and my wife is always asking questions.
Hint: you can pause a dvd and tell your kids to quit it.
I think I'm slightly more worried about balancing a 2.4GHz microwave generator (802.11g) on my bollocks.
Hey, it's only 100mW - that's barely enough to warm your pubes.
That's straight from the horse's mouth, at Vasectomy.com. I'd say "less than 1%" is very "uncommon."
Because, if has 'noun'.com, it must be authoritative. I'd feel better hearing it from, you know, a doctor.
No, median is the middle number of a set.
And an average refers to mean, median, or mode, depending on what you feel like doing. Meanwhile, you've sucked all the humor out of a decent joke.
CSS was designed to prevent copying from a DVD to a computer, which DeCSS solved.
CSS did no such thing. it was designed to prevent decoding a DVD without a license. Copying an image isn't even addressed by CSS.
So half the population is not "by definition" of below average intelligence. The word you are looking for is median.
First point: median is an average.
Second point: it's a joke.
