    Old laws dont work anymore, its time to change.

    Old laws work just fine. They just need to be enforced - trespass is trespass. The only difference is that, with a computer, the trespasser can be remote from his activities. All we really need is for a couple of judges to rule on which juridiction handles this sort of thing and we should be fine.

    It was easier in "the old days" for the government to control information.

    Yeah, they kept the Atom bomb classified for about 10 years. Then some scientists published plans in a science mag - the Pentagon tried to suppress the publication, but failed when the US Supreme Court ruled that they couldn't classify something that they hadn't produced.

    Personally, I'm interested in space travel, but I don't want to fund NASA. I'd rather they just get out of the way and let private enterprise work on it.

    It costs less to move people around in a bus than in a car. My point is that both forms of transportation are subsidized, so there's not much point in pointing it out.

    Add Washington DC to that list - you can fly to Washington National Airport and just hop on the subway into DC

    Well, Christians don't try to subvert the legal process to their own ends, at least not in an organized way. LRon's bunch, on the other hand, view lawsuits as a club to beat their critics with.

    Basically, the case law in the US is that you have to have a license because copying the software to RAM is violating the author's copyright.

    So, does that apply to CDs as well, since you have to copy the contents to a DAC in order to hear them? Does US law distinguish between a permanent copy and a transient one (such as the copy to RAM)?

    Sorry if I was being imprecise - I was referring to the synchronization of shared memory. My point was that you eliminate a great deal of unnecessary sunchronization by making this explicit - instead of locking a region of memory and playing with it, you compute something and send it to whoever needs it.

    The basic problem of adding more and more processors is keeping all the memory in sync.

    That's why message passing is typically used instead of some sort of shared memory approach. You eliminate the synchronization problems as well as memory contention. After that, it's just a matter of keeping all the processors busy.

    This may be news to you, but most car thieves are fairly stupid. If they were smarter, thy'd sell junk bonds or go into politics.

    Second, imagine some radical group in the US. posting instructions on how to hijack some planes and fly them into skyscrapers on the internet. Don't you think your FBI would shut these sites down as soon as words gets out?

    Not really. I can publish instructions on how to commit murder (as loompanics does) and I can publish accurate plans for constructing a nuclear device, both legally. How is this worse?

    Hmm... arcane technical reasons... well, these guys probably assign a phone number to the phone, but i'd bet it's set up like cellular - no fixed address. Since there's no way to trace the ip to a physical location or even a locale, they can't route to the correct 911 center. Do yourself a favor and buy an old cellphone for $5.

    Yes you do. The phone company won't sell you DSL without a phone number going to the same place. Maybe of you had cable or a leased line.

    No. Copyright will eventually expire, Sony and Disney notwithstanding. No copyright means no licensing.
