Silly question but any idea if they're simply running virtual machines on top? I've seen a number of places running hybrid setups w/ VMware Fusion.

"can replace in use files" - I'll try to be reasonable here and ask this out of curiosity: I haven't fully used linux in years - are you telling me you can update the kernel live while logged in and without rebooting? If that's the case that's just damned impressive.

    Agreed.

However, this feels very much like the kind of response you'd expect from a business model that relies on gouging prices and forcing students to buy new editions each year. A teacher's goal is to make sure the student learns the material and is prepared for what follows - not worrying if every student is able to afford to shell out an extra thousand or two on school books each year.

We see the same scenario occur with overpriced software, games, movies, music, etc. Once it exceeds what many people are willing to consider "reasonable" then piracy appears to rocket upwards.

    But that's their business decision.

What I'd like to see are more business models to compete with that structure. Referencing an article from earlier this week - a few course materials could be replace with the curriculum from Khan Academy. (He explains how they've implemented this in a school and frankly I'm straight up impressed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM95HHI4gLk )

I think we're way overdue to grow out of the old model. Does that make the school's actions correct? No. But it should damned well be a sign that it's time to adjust practices on the school's end or time for the business to adjust how they operate. Seeing how this has gotten to the point of litigation it appears neither is happening at the moment.

  17. Sony. on Square Enix Facing Big Losses For 2010 · · Score: 1

Sony is what has kept me from playing any of the new FF series. Why?

Initially the incredibly high cost of buying into the PS3. I can just about by a shitty used car for what they wanted for it when it was first released.

Then what happened? The price remained relatively high. This part is fairly normal - I typically wait for the price to drop a bit (and it has) and then start measuring out ways to justify such a purchase. But here's the thing - Sony's given me absolutely no reason to *invest* in their console. Particularly with their maneuver of removing OtherOS which was a major selling point for me. And hell, now the recent nonsense with them getting hacked AND losing critical customer data doesn't help one bit.

So let's take a look at the market now:

We've got the Wii - which has a few games I absolutely love. The Mario franchise is one that almost always tries to be innovative in some manner and defines new game styles (Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario are some examples that come to mind). Plus the ability to download and play SNES games on there is a big selling point as well (Super Mario RPG anyone?). However, there isn't much more for me beyond that unfortunately. One big con for me is the relatively small list of games that can be played over the network with friends. But the price is spot-on for what I feel it's worth all things considered.

Now, the Xbox 360: I'm not a huge Halo or teabagging fan but the Xbox 360 DOES have a shit-ton of games out - MANY of which are supported by the Live system. The price is a bit higher but I haven't seen Microsoft shaft their customers on the Xbox nearly as bad as we've seen Sony do. While the titles aren't my absolute faves that I've played so far - I feel confident I could find something I'd enjoy and could play with friends online.

For those reasons I'm considering heavily in investing in an Xbox 360. I think it'd make a good media player - from what I've read so far it supports a pretty robust set of features for that functionality (by all means correct me if I'm wrong). I think the game selection wont leave me hanging. And fuck, it's not Sony.

Some of the most successful people I've met in the long-term are just genuinely incredibly nice guys - that do exactly what the parent mentions: make you feel like a million bucks.

I used to be kind of an ass back in high school (not on the bully-end of the spectrum, just stupidly cynical) and I started paying attention to my friends who had more things working for them. What it boiled down to is that they really took the time to consider the thoughts other people presented and just being easy to be around. When you're too awkward to hold a conversation with or people feel like shit after talking to you you're going to alienate the people you want to be near.

So at what point does it stop being our fault and when do countries work to fix themselves?

I have a hunch we're probably after the same goal in this debate - but I wish more for more self-sufficiency in the world. But I'll be perfectly honest with you - I don't know much about the African nations or why so many of them seem to fail to become stabilized. Can we (the USA) really be a part of the solution?
