that many of the West-based posters here talk about inexpensive being bad quality and Asian factories ran as sweatshops. It's in the political environment many of you were raised in.
Almost all your political foes are of opposing principles from which you hold. Wake up call: your ideals (often misquoted as democracy) are not as free as you see it. </offtopic>
These sweatshops amount to a whole lot of (for example) the electronic things you use. I dare say that the computer you're using right now also contains these cheap components. Without these inexpensive products, the US economy no matter how massively independent you thought it was, won't be the way it is today. Why do you thing that China (which has so many times be flamed as a human-rights offender by the US) is a preferred trade partner? I guess when it comes to making uncle sam's pocket fatter human-rights can fuck off and die.
Now think before you post anything mindless like sweatshops and poor quality goods from China, Taiwan or any other Asian economy... your lovely AMD processors too come from an Asian country, Malaysia.
about pirracy and privacy is driving me nuts, why can't people see the obvious? M$ is pissed because their products are being pirated left, right and up their asses... but they then cause difficulty to who? That's right, legit owners of the software, CUSTOMERS... that's who!
Pirates will always find ways to circumvent any protection the boys at M$ can come up with. Heck, I've seem similar web-based authentication registration being spoofed by web-proxy based crack (it was a version of zMud about two years ago)... so to the pirates, these are just old tricks implemented differently.
Why doesn't M$ realise the answers that have been looking at them straight in the corneas for ages... produce less-expansive stuff and respect the customer's privacy. That's all they're asking for... is it too much to ask?
If the price of Windows reflects on development put into it, why oh why do we still have security concerns that are similar to those of previous versions, sometimes even more critical.
a few of these cool toys. One's from a Taiwanese manufacturer called Auldey, another is from a Chinese manufacturer called Pun Si, which doesn't seem to have a web site.
I modified the car a bit so that it runs on a 9 volt battery (the boxy type) instead of the standard twin 1.5v AA size batteries. It just involves simple wiring and soldering, nothing rocket-scientist-material about it. Needless to say, it sure goes VERY fast! Careful tho, if you use a 4WD based chasis, it might make your car a little easy to overturn on sharp corners.
I found a cool tin-car (it's what its called in Asia) modification website here for those of you who are interested in more advanced mods of this cool toy... Enjoy!
Precisely the point! Understand how proper computers work. Mission critical boxes. Of which XBoxes and PS2s are not. They are gaming consoles... powerful or not, multimedia enhanced or otherwise, high bandwidth connectivity or opposite... in the end, they are still gaming consoles.
Correct me if I'm wrong but why hasn't any Linux gods out there attempted porting Linux to where it'll matter more, like for example a Cray supercomputer? Surely there's better use for such a powerful OS other than making an XBox or a PS2 based Apache web server?
As for the cost factor, don't tell me you'd rather buy a state-of-the-art gaming console to run Linux on when you can get a used Celeron or K6 based PC which will suit your server needs more adequately?
Why would anyone want to run Linux on XBoxes anyway? What benefits could you possibly get? It's a gaming console for God's sake... you know, for playing games?
There's not even a decent game for Linux yet (and don't give me the Tux Racer lecture), and suddenly people are so keen to get XBoxes to run Linux.
Last I check, Linux's core strength was as a Network OS. And it's damn good at that! Now more and more distros are pushing Linux to be a Desktop OS, which I think is the next step for increased Linux popularity.
I just don't get the point of porting Linux to game consoles such as PS2 and Xbox, just because it has network connectivity, doesn't mean you have to turn it to a server.
For the last time... it's invented to be a gaming console.
I would say, if someone would write a single control panel-type interface, where the important things could be configured in a centralized locations (e.g. network, software packages, display, keyboard, mouse, etc) and make it blatantly obvious that it should be used (links on the desktop, and in an obviously labeled menu) then I would put Linux up against Windows.
A lot of the so-called Desktop Linux systems nowadays have this feature. One example I'm familiar with is Lycoris Linux. In fact, the desktop itself looks like a typical Windows desktop. User-friendly? Yes. Simple to use? Yes. But it is a pain to do a make on Lycoris. Something you could easily do on normal distros such as RedHat or Mandrake.
What further concerns me with these Desktop Linux distros are the commercial aspects of it. Like the web-based installers, which you usually have to be a registered (read paid) user to actually check it out. Sure it makes updating/installing stuff easier, but it's somehow killing the Open Source spirit IMHO. Why do I say this? Because if you manually compile any external tools you want, it will break the Add/Remove software feature in these distros (most of the ones I've tested anyway).
Another aspect of Linux that I really despise is the pain of detecting onboard (PNP) sound cards. Sure, I understand that one of the reasons for this is the reluctance of card makers to provide source codes to integrate the card's functionality into Linux, but somehow this aspect of Linux operatibility doesn't seem to be given much attention by the Community.
Until this is sorted out, forget about Linux being used as a gamer-friendly OS. What fun can a game be when you don't have sound to enhance the gaming experience?
I couldn't care less about what kind of files the kids are transferring, the point is, they are using the college's bandwidth.
I myself am a sysadmin for a junior college (pre-u), and it really pisses me off when the college's bandwidth is being sucked by spyware-laden P2P software. You can complain all you want about it's YOUR music or shit, but it is not YOUR BANDWIDTH ALONE.
Do not tell me that there are pure P2P software without any spyware elements, I already know that... Do not tell me that P2P is a beneficial technology that can do good to mankind, I know that very well too. But the fact that these fuckwits tend to download anything that is "in", and not (bother) knowing a single shit about spyware, trojans, viruses, etc.
The U's action is not going after the technology, but going after students who MISUSE the technology... and I am ALL for that.
LOTR uses extensive SFX too. and from this article, you can see that sheer processing power involved to achieve this.
But I have to agree with you on the storyline issue. AOTC is just all effect but no sense of plot. But I must admin the Yoda fight scene is quite interesting.
the best utopian literature I ever read. Can you just imagine a fellowship consisting of a few halflings, humans, an elf, a dwarf and an old wizard defeating an almighty sorceror?
Forget the fact that Sauron has virtually an infinite number of minions to implement his evil plans... not to mention that the fate of the world as they know it lies in the hands of a hobbit barely the height of my waist.
And in the end... they succeeded, nevermind the fact that to reach this conclusion I had to go through THREE tomes the size of phone directories.
Well, at least I need not wait for three years like those lazy people who prefer to wait for the movie... heh!
What is the point? There are many pop-up blocker software out there already. Why must Earthlink try to reinvent the wheel? Some browsers already has the support for this feature too. In fact you can stop this and all other annoyances by just disabling JavaScript... not that hard now is it, Earthlink?
I don't think so... I've never heard of VisionTek, and I don't think this would be possible (not hearing about them) if they are such a big vendor of Nvidia products.
Anyhow... how will this cause far reaching consequences (potentially or otherwise)?
Will the price of Nvidia based gfx cards drop (due to oversupply) or increase (overdemand from other vendors)? Anyone care to give some opinions?
makes you happy... Seriously! If you're into the save the universe with my God-given skills type, then by all means go into acad/science... Maybe even consider charity work eg. helping children with IT-assisted learning, etc.
As for me, I'll go for money anytime... My family's gotta eat...
of using google, it will give the most relevant results if you use a combination of two words or more.
For example, when I searched for God in google a year ago, it returned a list of results, in which the first result is PHP-Nuke(it has fallen to 2nd now)...
So instead of finding religious enlightenment, I found a really kickass PHP based web portal which I still use till now.
PS: I think the main reason for this is that the default admin login for PHP-Nuke used to be God. That has been deleted since version 5.0 (I think).
are they draconian because the govt. there doesn't hesitate to use force to crush resurgance against its ideology?
What makes other countries who allow large corporations to starve their workers by cooking up their accounts, but give millions of dollars to head honchos who actually know these activities are happenning?
Linux doesn't work, nor will it ever, in the west because they can be easily quelled by democratic members of senate who doesn't take any form of bribes at all (not even party donations, honest!), from producers of non-open source producers nor media barons (who invest in technology-related stocks/companies just to get a piece of the internet pie so that they can suppress the freedom it brings).
DeBeers is a monopoly? Perhaps in the US, here in Asia they're barely noticable. In fact, works of local jewellers are much more beautiful (and affordable).
First of all, the reviewer is a moron. Of all the methods of installing Win2k to the system, he uses a Rescue CD set. If I handed him a bootable self-executing Norton Ghost image restoring CD then he'd probably say that the Win2k is the easiest OS ever to install!
Now as you said... Personally I think he was cutting Win2K alot of slack by doing it with the restore CD. Think about it, a standard worksation install of RedHat 7.3 installs alot of software that does not come standard with Win2K. At the very least you'd need to install Visual C++, Office and a couple of those MS Entertainment Packs after you finished with the OS install, to get anything near what RedHat installs.
That's just the precise reason why Red Hat is becoming the more and more like the Win2k bloatware that it so-call "competes" with. The only reason you'll need a C++ compiler on a MS platform is when you're a developer. Unlike on the GPL/GNU Open Source platforms of Linux, you don't need to compile almost everything you download yourself.
MS Entertainment packs? Man... we don't need those on default windows installs, there are REAL games/entertainment software available on the windows platform! I can't say I've seen something worth playing on Linux though. Just face it, as a gaming platform, Linux sucks.
I don't mind the seemingly idiotic news...

whenever a pinball machine is spoiled (or outdated), it is usually scrapped? by outdated I mean that nobody bothers to play it anymore, thus making it economically unfeasible for the operator to keep it plugged.
Compared to a video game machine, whenever there's a new game released, the operator could buy the game's ROM chip (or whatever kind of media the boxes use) and just plug it in any of the unpopular/older machines.
