  4. Various bits about Newton and my youth on The Greatest And The Luckiest Of Mortals · · Score: 3, Interesting

I went to the same boys school as Newton originally went to, called the 'Kings School' in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England where Newton scratched his name into the wall of the old library. As was the custom at the time, many other students scratched and carved their names. His looks considerably less impressive than others. We were all taught that he attended the school and about his subsequent accomplishments. There is a garden named after him with a single apple tree in the middle, although it's not one he ever sat under. One of the various 'houses' in the school is also named after him. The town has a statue of him in front of the guildhall (equivalent to a town hall). However, in their rush to name things after him they have named a travisty of a shopping mall after him, which is awful, it's called the 'Isaac Newton Shopping Centre' and is particularlly down market with a big plastic apple hanging high near one of the entrances. Growing up asa kid I saw Newton's name and face everywhere as he adorned the back of the one pound note, the equivalent of a $1 bill. Sadly that was replaced by a coin with nobody on the reverse of the queens 'head' side. Even worse my home town is now remembered more for 'Maggie Thatcher' than Newton. I hope that one day the place will be associated more for Newton than Thatcher, but it is unlikely as he wasn't born there (he was born in Colsterworth nearby), only attending school there for a while when he was young. Lastly, I hope that Apple Computer bring back their Newton as it was a fantastic machine which deserved to bear the name of such an amazing man.

I'd rather have a machine that is well built and looks fantastic (it actually makes other techies i know drool) than have a slightly cheaper crappier machine. when i bought my powerbook (after owning a 17" iMac for a year) I realised that in that year I had had exactly ZERO problems with the machine. no software conflicts, no viruses, no spyware, no driver issues, no lack of a particular type of program that I needed... nothing. it took me about 2 seconds to decide to drop the 2 grand I need for buying the 17"pb. how often have you thought that about a PC product huh?

there's no chance that apple will release OS X for X86.... and the software developers will not stand for another platform, cpu, os change.

also, the apple mac hardware would get left behind which is where apple make the money. unless of course osx86 was a poor cousin that lacked features or support and why bother in that case.

I suggest that they try Linux as well as OS X and ensure that all common internal applications can run on both. The sales slowed down when it was just the EU countries, UK, France & Germany left on their own. When the USA wakes up again the sales will accerlate back to their previous level again. When the EU goes to sleep the sales will slow down a little bit, but not as much as when the USA dropped out earlier. It's going to be interesting to chart this cycle overtime. Shame we can't get separate counters for each store becuase I'd be real interested as to when people are buying most in each country. I'd imagine that the most sales would happen in the evenings and at weekends because people are at work or school. So, as the EU are coming home from work/school the USA also wakes up and adds to the sales. When the EU goes to sleep the USA are coming home and will increase their sales as well.
