  1. This has all been done before on Red Hat Proposes Alternative Settlement To MSFT · · Score: 1

This reminds me of the time when Red Hat released Service Pack 7 for NT 4 . Unfortunately I can't provide a link, as segfault.org is down (as it seems to be 50% of the time)

  2. Activation key on Return to Castle Wolfenstein Ships · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why does nobody object to iD maintaining an internet database of activation keys, but all get up in arms with Microsoft does it?

  4. Re:What about BASIC? on Do You Remember Bob? · · Score: 2

A five-year-old can understand BASIC, as evinced by me. I think the first program I ever saw was something stupid like:

    10 BORDER 5 : PAUSE 10 : BORDER 3 : PAUSE 10 : BORDER 2 : PAUSE 10 : BORDER 7 : PAUSE 10

etc. , but to a non-programmer's mind, it is easy to see the connection between this sequence of commands, and the result (bright flashy screen output). This is the first step of learning to program.

Try writing something in C or Java or Haskell to the same effect..?

That and the 20 second reply-time rule are supposed to stop crapflooders (but of course they don't; they only hinder ordinary posters). You can tell that it was designed by Americans..

(PS. For the obtuse, that was a dig at American tactics in Iraq)

Banks around here (New Zealand) use 3DES for PIN encryption (which is a bit of a joke because most PINs are only 4 digits). They also use 3DES (with the same master key) for message checksumming.

Banks make a big hullabaloo about security, more to scare people off than for real security.

My flatmate works for a wireless company here (not in America).

You can walk down a main street here and plug into dozens of wireless networks who haven't enabled their security (it's disabled by default -- or enabled with a default password), and just get free 12Mbit internet to your laptop, as well as full access to the company's PCs (none of them do this VPN thing that some of you have mentioned).
