But how would it get the poor reputation if the majority of its users are unaware of how poor it performs? It's not like they would have ready access to the corporate edition to compare it to.
Profit? Larger companies and their licencing probably make a lot more money for them than the home licences do.
A lot of the home installations they have are probably due to preinstallation and bundling, where the user doesn't realize how much slower it's making their system, because they only have experience with it installed and running. So, why bother making it leaner? It's just going to cost more.
However, the corporate users generally have IT guys who have somewhat of an idea of how much these programs use and how it slows the systems, so they're likely less tolerant and more willing to pay a bit extra to have these problems addressed.
By not taking their ball and going home, they're essentially validating and promoting the censorship and opression of the Chinese people. The US and allies are at war in the Middle-East to bring freedom and democracy to the area, but when it comes to China, everythings fine?
No, military action against China to liberate them would be stupid at best. However, we could all stop buying things "Made In China" and stop going to places that sell primarily "Made In China" things.
Stop buying things from them and the start to make less and less money. They make less money, and it'll be harder for them to continue with the massive censorship.
So, yes, MS and Google should take their balls and go home (take "balls" to mean whatever you want), as should everyone. Let their economy drop into the shitter and let them see where fucking over their own citizens will get them and then let them decide whether they want to join the free world.
The first season is selling quite well. I've bought it twice, myself (once for my self and once as a gift).
I, and most people I've talked to, prefer to watch their "TV" in DVD form, because you're not dependant on the network, their ability to stay connected, their other shows (how many times was Firefly preempted by football during its first run?), their schedule (how many days was Firefly on in it's short run?), or how much they care about the show (how many episodes were unaired, or aired out of sequence?).
With how poorly Fox treated Firefly (and Angel, well, how they treated Joss in general those last couple years), I have no doubt that a direct to DVD, or some sort of internet broadcasting, would be preferred.
I don't believe he was referring to Windows Update, but to applications who open IE to view web pages regardless of which browser is your default (Winamp does this. It's annoying when I'm using Firefox for the rest of my browsing, but if I click on any link in Winamp, IE opens).
My appologies, I was actually thinking of Harry Potter and how many people are reacting to the possibility of Harry dying.
However, if they didn't see it in the theatre, then I really don't care if it spoiled it for them because the entire reason why this main topic is here is because too few people went to see it in the theatres.
So, to all those who didn't see it in the theatres, I blame you for it's lack of success!
You think many Firefly/Serenity fans are going to decide to not buy this/convince others to as well just because they may not get anymore of the story?
That would be like not buying the last book in a series they own the others to because the main character dies in it, and eliminates any possibility of a continuation.
Hell, I work at a music shop (boo me all you like, I need the money), and at least 3 customers a day are looking for a song they heard on the radio, but they never caught the song/artist.
So, I fire up a lyrics site (in my case, www.letssingit.com , as it's the only one I can access from work), and I search for the lyrics they gave me. Quite often I find the song and the album it's on, and they buy it. Now, if I didn't have a lyrics site to go to, those would be lost sales, as the customer wouldn't know what to buy.
On second thought, to hell with the lyrics sites. Let the industry lose sales if that's how they want to play it.
It's just a case of a specific brand becoming the common name for a category of product, like Kleenex. Kleenex is a brand of facial tissue, however more people say "Hand me a kleenex" than "Hand me a facial tissue". "Lego" become synonimous with "interlocking stud-&-tube-assembly construction brick toys".
There is a reason, of course. Lego provides the best quality bricks, with the most interesting designs, and the most endorsement tie-ins.
I've never used Mega-Blocks because I've always believed them to be of lesser quality, because they wern't actual "Lego's". It's kind of interesting to see I was right. I didn't know they were Canadian, though.
Yeah, but if all your system is missing is PCI-E, then wouldn't it just be a matter of upgrading the board and whatever you need that's PCI-E (as far as I've seen, it's pretty much just video cards at the moment). The rest of it should still be usable, right?
but let the use of windows be the penalty in and of itself.
That would only work if the people using it actually considered it punishment. It's like letting a drug addict continue to use drugs because "it destroys their life", when in the addict's point of view you're giving them what they want. They don't know any better, so they don't see it as punishment.
Oh yeah, and in terms of the original topic. If I could download episodes of Veronica Mars season 2 for $1.99 a pop, I'd sign up for iTunes. It'll be cheaper than getting digital cable or sattelite just to get a channel that carries the show (stupid CTV for not carrying it this season, and Charisma Carpenter spends 90% of the time in either a small bikini or really tight clothes).
They dominate one market, mp3 players, and with that leverage they have dominated the online music market (don't tell me iTunes has 90% because it's just that good).
But you don't have to use iTunes to download your music. You can do it illegally, you can rip the CD's you bought and transfer them over. Hell, if you take the time and use the right program, you can convert what you download from other services to a format the iPod will reccognize.
Why do people choose the ipod? Mostly due to brand reccognition, but there are other reasons. The next biggest one I've come across is the amount of third party accessories (protective/designer covers, speaker dock/mounts, radio transmitters and the like). The other audio players don't have nearly the same selection. Whether that's important to you or not, I don't know. Some people prefer the interface/controlls. Some people prefer the asthetic design. Some people are just Apple nuts.
Of course, there are reasons to pick something other than an iPod. You don't like Apple, poor experience with the iPod (defective unit or whatever), or the iPod lacks certain features (video playback, OGG or FLAC format support, etc.). Maybe you don't like the interface or design.
[quote2]Everybody has one, and because people get it working when they pop that CD in their machine, they are quite inclined to use the iTunes service as that's laid out seemlessly[/quote2]
Yeah, but they don't HAVE to install iTunes. There are other ways to get your music onto your iPod (don't ask me what, I don't have an iPod or the like, just an MP3-CD player). It's not like they're working it so you MUST use iTunes to use your iPod, or you have to use their audio format.
Then, you have to consider the other advantages a traditional PC offers over a console. The main thing being choice. You can choose who you get it from, you can choose what goes in it (and how much of it), you can choose what goes on it, and with today's "Pimped" PC crowd, you can choose how it looks (whether you go simple and beige, classy with a brushed aluminum or with black, or completely tricked out with neon and black lights, glow in the dark liquid cooling system with a transparent case with the Half-Life symbol etched into the side). Not to mention you can choose to buy a prebuilt system, have a shop build one to your specs, or if you want to, you can get the parts and build one yourself.
When was the last time someone built a working X-Box or a Playstation from readily available parts?
I'm sure everyone's noticed the word "disclosed". Firefox/Mozilla are open sourced, so everyone can see potential voulnerabilities and tell the world. IE, however is generally limited to the MS developers, and it will pretty much be up to their bosses to decide whether to disclose a voulnerability.
How many IE voulnerabilities are there that we don't know about?
One thing I've wondered, is that if you can recharge it through the same connection it uses to transfer files, doesn't it end up "recharging" every time you hook it up? And doesn't that help kill the battery (developing a charging "memory")?
But how would it get the poor reputation if the majority of its users are unaware of how poor it performs? It's not like they would have ready access to the corporate edition to compare it to.
...which, for some reason...
In the end, it's about profit.
Which uses ads to pay for the bandwidth, unless you block them.

Fuck "Lost".

I know, I was being an ass.
Yes it is, according to their website.
My appologies, I was actually thinking of Harry Potter and how many people are reacting to the possibility of Harry dying.

Now if we could only get iTunes on Linux and I'd be all for it.
You think many Firefly/Serenity fans are going to decide to not buy this/convince others to as well just because they may not get anymore of the story?

I guess anyone who runs Linux/BSD/etc. would be in violation as well.

Isn't XP basically Win2k with a bunch of eye candy?
