It is also incompatible with the existing ISO standard ISO 26300:2006, the Open Document Format (ODF), which already offers a high degree of interoperability, wide support, and offers the level playing field the world needs. Google is a supporter of ODF and has successfully integrated this open format into Google Docs and Spreadsheets. ODF also enjoys implementation in over twelve other products.

Looking at that list, I see primarily open office derivatives and web-based text editors. ODF was designed for Open Office, and web-based text editors have very limited capabilities.

What if MS used ODF? I'm betting the slashdot crowd would complain that they don't keep MacWord95Margins when saving in ODF format because they want you to keep using proprietary .doc files. Just because ODF made it through ISO first doesn't mean it's all that.

When someone close sources BSD licensed code, they don't pretend to do it under the guise of protecting your freedom. Placing BSD (MIT, etc) licensed code under the GPL is hypocritical.

  21. I agree with Theo on this one on Theo de Raadt On Relicensing BSD Code · · Score: 1

What's the underlying premise of the Free Software? It's that you should share your code. Some people don't want to, so the GPL/copyleft exists to force people to do so. Sharing your code. Think about it for a moment. Relicensing *BSD software as GPL is legal but it violates the entire point of Free Software since it prevents sharing your changes back.

A lot of people bring up the issue of closed source software "stealing" BSD code. I personally don't care; that's their right.

Consider this: Jeffrey Dahmer killed 17 people. That doesn't mean it's ok for you (or Hans Resier) to kill someone. If you believe in the GPL, you (to an extent) believe that closed source software is immoral and wrong. If it's wrong for Microsoft to place restrictions on BSD code, it's wrong for the GPL to place restrictions on BSD code the fact that it's still "FREE" (for a narrow definition of FREE which is incompatible with the rest of the world) doesn't mean you're not sharing.
