The employee had freedom of speech, but Microsoft also has freedom to fire him. Unless you have a n employment contract that specifies the length of your employment, you're an "at will" employee. You can leave at any time, and you can be fired at any time. Maybe you don't like how freedom tastes.

Think of the millions of dollars that Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Mariah Carey were given the last time they re-signed their contracts. Then look at the shit they've put out since that djs won't play for cash.

The RIAA and record companies are a bunch of back-room good old boys, out of touch with reality. Any accountant could have told them that trying to sustain over-the-hill has beens wasn't a wise investment.

The RIAA convinced congress to pass a law making sharing copyrighted music punishable in civil court at thousands of dollars per song.

What is the true cost of the infringement?

Well, iTunes and other services sell downloads for $0.99 each, of which the RIAA, music labels, artists, etc. get about $0.60.

Gentleman, I am reminded of the 1980s hacker cases where ATT claimed millions of dollars worth of damages when hackers accessed private tech manuals. IIRC, the court bitchslapped them when the defense attorneys revealed that they sold the same manual for $100.

    This injustice cannot stand.

I have power toys, but I don't care for how the desktop vm works. You have 4 virtual desktops, but windows aren't confined to their desktop. If you open mozilla in desktop 2, switch to desktop 1, then alt-tab to mozilla, mozilla will appear in desktop 1.

In beos, switching to a window switched to that window's desktop. (the programmer could also set the window to appear in all desktops). You could send a window to a desktop by switching desktops while clicked in the window title bar.

Also, each BeOS desktop could have its own screen size, refresh rate, and depth.

if you want pdfs that don't look like goatse's asshole after being ham-slammed, the only choice is (La)TeX. There are 3 options:
    1. use PDFLaTeX, which produces PDF files rather than DVI files.
    2. use (La)TeX to produce DVI files, convert to postscript (dvips), then convert to pdf
    3. use (La)Tex to produce DVI files, then use dvipdfm to convert to PDF.
dvipdfm is well documented and FREE, so you should be able to see how to create a PDF file. Of course, the PDF file format is also well documented by Adobe. That's the best source of information on writing pdf files.

This is slashdot, where being accused of violating the GPL is punishable by death, but violating the microsoft EULA is your civic duty, so it's the justification of p2p file sharing services isn't surprising.

Ignoring the legal issues, iTunes (and the other services) do have advantages. iTMS provides a large selection of music, consistent quality, fast downloads, and 30-second previews. p2p is generally a wasteland of mislabled files, corrupted downloads, poor encoding, audio glitches, and slow download times, if you can even find what you're looking for. There are some specialized cases where p2p or binary newsgroups are better (bootlegs, studio outtakes, live recordings, etc), but for commercial music, iTunes, musicmatch, etc. offer a more user-friendly experience.
