There are 4 authors, and I'm not sure there was even 1 editor. Like many multi-authored books, half the chapters are spent repeating information that will be reworded by the next author. Maybe they could get jobs as slshdot editors? :)

The example code is contrived and ignores a lot of real world problems. Of course, if you're writing a shopping cart of your own, you won't learn anything new here. If you don't know php and want to add some dynamic content to your web pages, it's a good book, though.

"scripting language" is a loaded term... it implies (too me, at least) that somebody started writing code without understanding the scope of the problem, without proper design. Sure, that can (and does) happen with programming languages like C or Java too, but the compile phase seems to convince peope to think it over (and also, each .c or .java file is more opaque, just showing off a few functions or #defines in the header/java file).

Smalltalk, Ruby, and scheme are also "scripting" languages, but a lot of big, complex web sites have been written with them.

Of course, SLASH (perl) is a maintenence nightmare, while PHPNuke, Drupal, etc aren't.

Also, it makes it a lot easier to play with the numbers, and determine in real time how much I can contribute to my IRA.

I like using xhtml and css, and use it for my own personal web pages. When you're going for a larger audience, though, you are limited by their constraints. (Insert MS Windows joke here)
