    So during recessions (I think we had one of those recently), the rich will get to mark down their holdings, and pay nothing on any of their earnings. Might even get to report a loss they can use to offset future earnings.

    No, they get a refund. The next time there's a depression, the government would be writing billion dollar checks to the 1% crowd. And the next CEO to drive his company into the ground would get a fat check from Uncle Sam, just in case that golden parachute wasn't enough.

    Seriously, the author has an unintended consequences IQ of a goat-fucker.

    What's the difference between Larry Ellison borrowing against his stock vs borrowing against his house (other than the mortgage interest being tax deductible)?

    Either way, he pays back the loan (with money that's been taxed) or he loses the underlying collateral. Please, explain how it's a magic money machine that avoids taxes.

    Umm, the standard fapple rebuttal to "my android phone has 4G!" is that 4G is a battery hog and Apple is more concerned with battery life.

    The bankers and money changers want their rent but Google or Facebook don't need them. It's a shame Facebook isn't fucking them over.

    Of course, Facebook will raise $10 billion. Last year they had $1 billion in profit so they don't need to go public at all. But with > 500 shareholders, they're required to file the same paperwork as publicly traded companies (Thanks, SEC!).

    Yesterday (after reading the article), I did some Siri tests with a 4S and my girlfriend's jailbroken 4. For all the tests, the phones were next to each other and I only spoke once for both of them. With no/minimal background noise, they had the same results. With the tele on in the background, the 4S was much more reliable.

    Once you have experience and a track record, that matters far more than what school or degree or GPA you had (the exception being ivory tower institutions where they protect their own). How those courses are looked on depends more on you than on wherever they came from.

    Imagine if Microsoft said "here's a cheap student version of visual studio. But if you want to develop commercial applications with it, you need to buy the more expensive version." You don't have to imagine since they used to do that.

    Ok, imagine if the FSF said "here's a FREE yacc replacement. We call it bison. Oh yeah, but if you use it, your output will be GPL". You don't have to imagine since they used to do that.

    Ok, let's imagine Microsoft did as you said. Well, I wouldn't use .docx files. So if it bothers you, don't use .ibook files.

    Samsung, HTC, and LG have licensed Microsoft's patents for use in Android. The only major player not to is Motorola and they're currently being sued by Microsoft. So given that Microsoft likes to patent things and collect royalties on their patents, why wouldn't they patent everything they could?

    I set up an xfs volume a couple years back. After copying a few files over nfs, it became corrupted. the xfs fsck did something -- it told me that it was so corrupted, it couldn't be fixed.

    long version: Most GPL copyright owners aren't aware, don't care, or don't have the time/legal training to enforce GPL violations of their code. The Busy Box guys actively enforce the GPL license on their code. If you violate the busy box GPL license, they will not re-license it to you unless you also stop violating the license on all the other GPL software that's being distributed. If they replace busy box, nobody will bother them about the other GPL violations.

    That's weird. Because when I ask Siri to set an alarm for 5:30 am, it sets an alarm for 5:30 am. But when I ask Google the same thing, I get back a bunch of links about Siri.
