Oh we have justification too. We must...I mean the rest of the european union hates them too. There must be some reason for all that worldwide animosity tward the french. Sheesh! There are some countries that the only thing the USA has in common with is disliking the french:P
Sweet! As much as I like the pretty HDTV singals, the pricing of HDTV recievers is still rediculous. I guess I'll just have to move to Canada. I hear they have some tech jobs up there and last time I was to B.C. I met some fine looking women. Given that the U.S. has gone all socialist on me anyway I see no downside:)
...not to mention how silly he is going to feel when he realises that he has to drink a warm beer because he wasted all the ice on his room cooler contraption...
Actually I have a bathroom fan sitting on my workbench that I have been meaning to use to create a quiet pc. It moves alot of air but is very quiet and relatively compact (compared to a 20" box fan anyway). Now all I need is about 500x more free time then I have now to complete that project:P
In related news... The creators of the HAL-5 mechanical suit mentioned their upcoming upgrade codenamed "HAL-9000". Possible new features included artificial intelligence taking care of the user's every need with voice activation...
Just want to clarify... you mean a 5 watt INCANDESANT light bulb right?...Because a 5 watt incandesant bulb would be pretty dim while 5 watt fluorescent bulb would actually be considerably brighter in comparison. And then there are 5 watt LED bulbs...
This is slashdot after all. Please be specific about the technologies you refer to.:D
I dunno... batteries didn't help those people in pitch black very much. All but three of them died. And the eclipses only came once every 22 years there!
No worries on the typo...I figured it out:) I'm intrigued by the 8 year warranty on the toyota powertrain though. Sounds like I may need to start thinking about my next vehicle purchase:)
I live in a semi-rural area near Portland, Oregon. I use asterisk at home and am working with a local non-profit to enhance their communications systems with VOIP. Since emergency services are important, I contacted my local 911 center (via an e-mail address listed on their website) to ask about how I can best tie my VOIP systems to them. I got a very quick and friendly response from one of the administrators there saying I didn't need to worry too much about how I tie in as their people are trained to verify the location of every caller first thing. Just provide some sort of tie to the POTS network so the call can go through.
The ability of the 911 center to automatically know the location of the caller is just a "bonus" feature that does save lives in a few isolated instances, but should not be considered essential for emergency services to be effective.
What I think would be really cool is if someone developed a protocol for VOIP switches to route emergency calls directly to their local 911 center. The VOIP provider would have to register with the 911 center they need to connect to and in turn would be provided the IP address/account information to connect with (preferably some sort of IAX2 type connection). In the protocol would be the ability to send extended "callerid" type information including address, family/premisis information, or even "medic-alert" type information applicable to residential customers.
Hmmm, now that I look back at it I realize it was the Altair article that specifically mentioned faster discharge, not the Toshiba article. Though the Toshiba article did imply fast discharge characteristics in paragraph 4.
Anyway...so with all this new battery tech coming out...are y'all going to delay putting the Electrocharger to market yet AGAIN (allready went from "fall/winter 2004" to "1st quarter 2005" to "summer 2005" now) to wait for different battery technology to put in it?:|
Yes, but most any standard 120V AC plug CAN handle 10Amps. At a 10amp charge rate you could charge up the 200Wh (100W for two hours) mentioned in the parent post in 10 minutes. That's not so bad:) Who says you HAVE to charge the batteries at the maximum charge rate the spec allows?
RTFA, it says that the new technology not only makes faster charging possible, but also allows the batteries to handle much faster discharge. That's why the first applications will be Hybrid cars and powertools. Both applications beg for batteries that can handle massive power drains and turn around and fast charge without blowing up or shortening their lifespan.
Personally, this is exactly the type of battery breakthrough I have been waiting for. I opted to buy a standard Honda Civic because I realised that the battery packs in the current hybrids are likely to wear out as quickly as my laptop's battery and cost considerably more to replace...which makes the option fiscally irresponsible for someone like me (not to mention the performance deficit in the current models). But once this new battery tech hits the hybrids, they can be made to perform better and have the battery pack life more in line with the longetivity of the rest of the vehicle's components...which will mean the technology has matured enough to be mainstream.
Given that they say this tech should be here as soon as NEXT YEAR, I'm excited! There will be no excuse for car makers not to have hybrid models of all shapes and sizes after this.
One more quick item to note...fast charge/dischare hybrid power packs do already exist in a different form. It was setup as sortof a hybrid of hybrid. The power pack was a combination of huge capacitors for the quick power drains and charges, and then normal batterys along side those for sustained moderate charge/discharge (pulling a long hill or caosting down it). This hybrid/hybrid thing was discussed on slashdot before but here is the link for reference: http://www.ecolectrictechnology.com/
I love your sig man. That is one of the really memorable parts of the incredibles movie.
Now to stray back on-topic for a moment...I have observbed the same thing. Stupid windows apps not starting because there is no virtual memory even though you have copious amounts of actual memory. Argh!
"Horner said he hoped museums around the world would start cracking open bones and looking for soft tissue in their fossils."
Oh yes, that's a great idea. I can see it now... Dinosaur exhibits around the world all simultainiously close and hardware stores sell out of sledge hammers as museum curiators go smashing about in the exhibits in hopes of finding the holy grail of dino DNA. There goes the neighborhood!
Well by giving copious examples of "what not to do" of course! With cool graphics and video. And you thought the ratings were going to be high before...:)
The people responsibile for the hiring of the people responsible for the parent post have been SACKED!!!
I'm a developer...make "decent" wages by my own measure, and I watch broadcast analogue TV. I resent that you classify me as "riff-raff".
Given that there are ***only*** 12% of us left, maybe we should have some sort of minority protections now? Being almost extinct and all;)
I'll try to be more careful about stating the obvious in the future;)
P.S. - Your welcome!
Sorry... that one is already taken too. http://gaypal.com/
You forgot arena football fields... What is that? like 200 million of those? http://www.arenafootball.com/

Yes, especially considering how hot it is there. You would need some fireproof grass or something:P

Anyone have a mirror? Mirrordot seems to be as slashdotted as the site itself. And the post is only 3minutes old:P

Parent modded "informative"...HAHAHAHA!!! I hope that was a joke anyway. Do people have common sense anymore?
OMG! I think the parent is the funniest thing I've seen on Slashdot in months. Rock on! Mod on!
...And it won't stop...EVER!
