  1. Too bad VA is no longer a "Linux" Company on Microsoft Says IBM/Linux Their Biggest Threat · · Score: 3, Insightful

With the support of BIG BLUE, they might have a chance. When I read this article, the demise of LWN, and from Forbes.com (ala slashdot feed) ' "Other firms such as TurboLinux that had filed for IPOs eventually canceled their plans. The Nasdaq Composite has shed three quarters of its value since March 2000, and for the Linux stocks, the fall has been even harder. Cobalt and Andover.net are gone, swallowed up by Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ) and VA, respectively. VA itself now sells for under a buck per share, and founder Larry Augustin last week gave up the CEO job (he's still the chairman). His firm has changed its name to VA Software, and its media contact person declined an interview request for this story "because we're no longer a Linux company." ' I wonder wher the focus is.I ask why are the root and fundamental Linux proponets hitting the pavement and knocking on doors?

IBM is choosing Linux, and doing what other companies have failed to do: Compete directly with MS on their terms...with MONEY. This competition is at the server level, but in time perhaps with adequate funding and a focus on applied resources, perhaps inroads will be made in the next few years to challenge Microsoft on the desktop. Microsoft now sees this threat, and recognizes that IBM has a new tool in their arsenal to take on MS. Bundling pieces of Linux in their corporate high dollar solutions is a fiscally prudent move. Additionally, with the fundamental state and nature of OSS the IBM team has a wider variety of Eyes & Hands on developers that are providing pro bono service. Definitely a great bullet for promoting this type of integration with the bean counter!

So what does this boil down to? IBM has a recognized threat to MS server market. The ball is in the hands of IBM to push this, or the path to the Linux desktop will meet the fate of OS/2.

Your CMA settings are only sent to the server when you press turn done, and therefore changes you make to CMA in the same turn as you save a game will be lost.

If you use the CMA the resulting savegame isn't endian and 64 bit safe. So you can't use the savegame on a computer with a different architecture.

The easy AI is not easy enough for novice players. If the AI is beating you up early in the game, try setting the "generator" server option to 2 or 3. That is, in the server, before starting a game, type: set generator 2 or: set generator 3

The hard AI is not hard enough for very experienced players, and still does some stupid things. E.g., it prefers leaving cities in revolt rather than letting them starve/shrink.

Sometimes there may be too many advances in the "goal" menu of the science report, such that the menu goes off the bottom of the screen and you cannot select some items.

You may sometimes get the messages {ss} player for sample not found {ss} player for sample not found when using the esound sound driver. This is nothing to worry about.

Some effects of wonders and research first take effect the turn after. Fx when building the lighthouse some triremes will only get the movement bonus the next turn.

The XAW client can only display 25 citizens in the city dialog.

The autoattack generally doesn't work very well.

When planning a goto in the server, fx for an autosettler or an airplane, the server will use knowledge not available to the player.

The science dialog is not updated when you gain a tech. You need to close and open it.

In the gtk client, sometimes the area near the minimap contains garbage.

Automate routines like auto explore don't handle triremes very well.

    LOG_DEBUG doesn't work with non-GCC compilers.

The color markup in the gtk message window is lost if the dialog is closed and then reopened.

When setting server variables, the server in many cases doesn't check the values as well as it could.

Bad things happen when you manipulate multiple global worklists simultaneously.

Even in singleplayer the AI will get a chance to move both before and after the human player each turn. This will sometimes give the impression that the AI moves twice.

The xaw client does not work well with the KDE window manager. Try using the gtk client or another window manager.

Version 1.13.0 will not work with version 1.12.0 or any previous versions. Note that the client will fail a bit more hard by just printing a message to stdout and exiting afterwards.

    Linux Champion Makes Business Move

    For Immediate Release

As a pioneer in the Linux community and close friend to Linus Torvalds, Dirk Hohndel is far from a chameleon . A respected hacker who began contributing to Linux eight weeks after Linus Torvalds first announced the project, he now makes his living as one of the top executives in Germany's largest Linux company, SuSE A.G. With his guidance and business saavy, SuSE has a future. This business acumen leads us to ask: Why are you selling off your holdings in VASoftware?

LAM: It is noted that you plan to sell your remaining 1000 shares in VASoftware in August of this year. What is motivating this?

DH: After analysis we feel that they're currently not a profitable entity. We have watched them in a familiar struggle. SuSE was in a similar situation, but we had a product for revenue generation. VA is offering a free resource and supplying the support. Unfortunately their target market does not need their branded support.

LAM: How will this impact your operations?

DH: We forsee no adverse impact to our operations. Internally, we manage our own software development with a more robust propietary system. Additioanlly, we are not dependent on an outside "source" to modify our "source".

LAM: Speaking of open source, what impact will this have on the Linux community?

DH: Since Eric Raymond left the VA board, there has been a lack of "civil conscious". The stigma that VA has carried to the Linux community was not eliminated after the name change. We are concerned that VA has not adequately distanced themselves and their business strategy from the beleagured Linux community.

LAM: What about the GNU/Linux debate frequently seen on the OSDN site Slashdot?

DH: That is a nonissue. Unfortunately this bickering has created a schism in the commercial Linux community. There are forums for this debate and discussion. Ironically, the founder and the man that gave genesis to the kernel has offered the least debate.

LAM: Do you feel that that these issues are related to the fiscal challenges faced by VAsoftware?

DH: Absolutely, and this cost them our confidence in their solvency.

LAM: So you basically weren't making any money from your investment?

DH: The bottom line is that we feel that VA is not a viable investment. Perhaps with the resignation of Larry there will be more focus on the future and earnings. Larry was a visionary and brilliant man, I will hate to see him go. Unfortunately he was unable to meet the bottom line.
