  1. Don't count your chickens before they hatch!!! on FCC Report Supports a la Carte TV Pricing · · Score: 3

I'm shocked to see how many people are blindly in approval of this. Think "big picture" and think "long term"... There are plenty of channels that I watch on occassion or very unpredictably (like TNT when they have a sporting event I want to watch). Do I want to pay what they'll charge (noone's even said what an individual channel would even cost yet) to watch one or two shows a month? Sure, there are a handful of channels that are "must haves", but out of the rest in the package, there are a TON of them that are "on occassion" viewing. How pissed will you be when owners of channels shuffle popular shows between their channels just to raise funds on the less popular channels? If sales of Discovery Kids is low, who is to stop Discovery Channel from moving Mythbusters over there to increase sales? In the long run, ala-carte will probably end up costing most of us MORE (due to increased fees), and we're going to be upset when we can't watch half the shows we used to because they get shuffled to less popular channels. Throw in the death of many of the "fringe" interest shows and you end up with satelite/cable being just another Network TV paradise of reality shows all vying for more mass viewership instead of quality programming.

  2. Re:Why BPL is bad for radio transmissions on Google Invests in Power-Line Broadband · · Score: 1

Depends entirely on the evidence that they had to present. The problem here is that it's much easier to prove the existance of interference than the lack of. The burden of proof has been met by ARRL and until these concerns are answered (not dodged as they have been) by power companies, there is a problem. I'm sorry, but radio interference is intollerable (not to mention against FCC regulations). Power lines simply were not designed for this application.

As far as anonymous posting, I'm guessing you haven't been around much. People tend to use anonymous posts to troll and avoid being modded down. It's also difficult to know if you're talking to the same individual each time or someone else. It's not the pseudonym that matters, it's the fact that the pseudonym doesn't change during the discussion that matters. Plus it's a way of lowering the shield and showing that you're willing to stand behind your comments and make a positive contribution to the /. community without fear of mod retribution. :)

    From the article:
Mullen says that increasing Dell's market share in portable music players isn't the point of the project. He stressed Dell's position as the leading provider of technology to higher education and said the company is simply giving its customers what they want.

Somehow, I find this to be highly unlikely. Apple has the majority of the market share with the ipod. Add in the fact that Napster wants to cut into itunes share in the "legal music download" market.

If they truly want to give their customers what they want, they'd lower pricing on the music download. There's no real motivation to pay existing prices for a digital only (meaning no media included) copy of music. Throw in restricted rights on said music and it's not a sensible purchase for most users.

  9. Any good lawyer could prove this bogus on Florida Man Charged For Stealing Wi-Fi · · Score: 5, Insightful

Making some basic assumptions (the wireless was using an SSID, was unencrypted, and a DHCP server was available), any lawyer can make the valid claim that the wireless access point was intended for the public to use:

    - SSID was advertising the availability of the access point.
    - Absense of encryption re-enforces the fact that this was not a private network.
    - DHCP giving an IP address is as good as saying "have a seat, enjoy the connection".

A good analogy would be to have a big sign in front of your house saying "Cookies inside!" (SSID). You leave the door propped open (lack of encryption). You have someone inside pull up a chair and invite the person to sit down and enjoy said cookies (DHCP).

If you don't want people on your wireless, take appropriate steps to protect yourself. Someone breaking encryption to get access to a network is illegal. Connecting to an unprotected network should not be.
