    The librarians shouldn't oppose based on that!!! If the are ok, in general, with filering the internet and they find the implementation faulty then they should address that.
    I don't like the idea of some company producing these blocklist. I would rather see librarians build a system that allows them to collabrative filter the web. I would think it would be useful to not only filter out certain sites but to also "mod up" certain sites that librarians think are most relative. We have been trusting librarians to do this type of censoring for hundred (thousands?) of years.

    There should be open sourcedfilters. That way it is totally explict what is being filtered and how. There can be no conflict of interest or abuse. As an added bonus public schools and libraries wouldn't have to absorb the financial impact of purchasing a filtering product.

    Actually I think the analogy work perfectly. He left out an important piece of the analogy. With leverage what you gain in force you lose in distance. Therefore someone with leverage can force a technology but at the expense of the distance they are able to push the technology.

    Bill Gates Foundation offers grants of up 1,000,000 in cash and software for high school computer clubs. We received a grant 3 years ago and built a ISO 1799 certified NOC for our school district. I learn the in's and out's of the standard, as well as the dangers of recycled halon.

    Libraries having been in the censorship business since their inception. Someone had to decide what scroll was worthy of shelf space. I think libraries should stop maintaining blacks lists and start maintaining white lists. They should us the same standards that they use to select books as they do to select websites.
    There is no reason a person needs to see Blogger Joe's rants on popcorn at his local movie theater. If Blogger Joe wrote a newsletter and sent it to every public library should they add it to their stack? Probably not.

    This is hole in any type of security system. At some point there needs to be some form of trust and when the trust is betryed security breaks down.

    There is no way some troll would waste their time gathering 100's of people to get their honest assessment of the state of computing. A troll typically fabericates their facts and colors the truth. They certainly do not run robust, scientific, double-blind and industry standard focus groups.
    Quite simply, it is too time consuming and a troll by definition does not have time to waste.
