    I think all those people who signed for ICANN membership should just decide it by their vote about new TLD's.

    Not that I'm in anyway conderd about that TLD's trouble, it's just for the money much people would make from all these new TLD's, that's what it's all about.

    Typing www.google.com in my NS-Crashicator is no problem for me and google finds what I search, why does anyone need those TLD's the only good would be .sex, presuming it is possible to move all that p0rn in this DLT, that would allow easy filter for children who should'nt see/click those links like sometimes even on /..

    This small bastard knows who I mean, I clicked on, asumming it would be something meaningfull, and I get those gay pOrn, just as my small son enters the room. Only good that a fast CTRL-ALT-F1 got me to the console, killing the netsape PID.

    I don't think it's possible, so I just go my way...

    One truly hopes that that is sarcasm. As a good little minion of the US media, I followed the shenanigans in Florida rather cloesly, and it took a loooong time to hadncount all those votes. There has to be something mechanical in that along the way.This is a big country.

    Size doesn't really matter, here in the EU we have an roughly/somewhat equal number of people who can vote (EU vote).(My expirience is limited to elections in Germany, but as the EU election takes place in all countries, I asume their handling of those events isn't that different)

    6-7 people can easily count the votes of 1000-3000 people, they mostly come from a different political party, cheating is impossible this way. As for the time we have knowledge people & computers they get data from some small selected districts and who knows what else. We get forecasts and "Hochrechnungen" (sorry no english word available) starting a few minutes after the election is closed and getting very close to the real end result, after ~45 min...:-)Of course you get those data in nice grapics on TV.

    I don't know much about the US system but using something like machines, who ever created the OS doesn't really matter in this case, is really not the right respect we should have...

    Hello,

    I'm running reiserfs on production servers for month (HW-RAID 5) and haven't had any problems...:-)

    It's really amazing, if you have (broken hw) to hard reboot a machine with >100 GB and you prepare for a long/boring and unwanted e2fsck time. But reiserfs takes about a 1/4 second and tells you, it had replayed 3 transactions and everything is fine...:-)

    Personally I'd like to see support (latest modutils ...) for kernel 2.4 in one of them

    If you want to run 2.4.0, why not read Documentation/Changes, download the things you need, compile them and get your shinny new kernel running?

    After all it isn't too hard...

    By the way, 2.4.0 is really amazing, I most liked the CPU selection and special the support for my new Sony Picturebook, the one with this transmeta CPU, I had a few problems getting X 4.0.2 running, it compiled fine but somehow I couldn't get the right Modeline for this 1024x480 Display in my XF86Config, at least I wrote a short mail to Linus, as I had read during my searches on the net, that he has one. I never thought he would have time to answer, but (wow) only two hours later I got an answer from him with his XF86Config and as you asume, as I had etited my conf and typed startx it started...:-)

    Hello,

    being a native german, I have read lots of books about WW-II, as I would really like to know how this all could happen, I was lucky to get some info from my father, who was a soldier during that war and at the end POW of the U.S. army, a bit irritating, but from the things he told me, that seemed to be the best time he had during the war and afterwards during his life, he was always a friend of every decision made by american politicans. Sad, that I can't ask him anymore any questions...:-(

    Once I read something about the US, using native americans in special tasks, they could just speak their natural language without any encryption, because, anyway no one in the world could understand what they said!

    If someone has more info about that, or even an URL, I would be very thankfull...

    Thanks, my thoughts, I'm a bit afraid that M$ tries to make money from the desktop monopol they have.

    They could easily introduce some nifity features in IIS-x.x that work only with M$ IE x.x. Everyone wants/needs these features of course, forcing the web-server market to use M$ OS...:-(

    I can't imagine another way for them to stand against apache, it just better than everything they could deliver.

    Amusing, Ballmers: Hey, 2.4 is out, that could be a threat against W2K. Is there anything W2K could do better/faster than Linux 2.2, despite crashing?

    Ummm, there is a runlevel 5 ... traditionally this is the level of process execution that takes place in XDM execution (multiuser plus X at boot time)

    # runlevel 3 is multi-user with network and xdm

    Hello,

    I'm just trying to find the certificate I should get, that discussion comes right in time..

    I tried some of the above metioned URL, but some wanted to much info from me, other had tests, that were so easy, my first thought was, wow boy, you're becoming a guru real soon...:-)

    But most questions just were easy, but what kind of knowledge provides a test, that shows your ability to learn some manpages? Has it anything to do with your knowledge and general understanding how a UNIX system works? I'm in doubt.

    Checking the LPI tests I saw this question:

    Having booted into run level 3, how would you change to run level 5 without rebooting?

    1.telinit 5
    2.startx
    3.run 5
    4.ALT-F7-5
    5.setinit 5

    I use SuSE and runlevel 5 is not defined in /etc/inittab...

    Looks like a question for someone with skills in RH....

    I can't understand that trouble, I'm just happy with the 2.2.x series, if you use it as server OS, and it is IMHO one, altough you can and I do use it as my only OS...:-).

    You don't need USB, nifty 3D-acceleration, or even X, you can just sit there and watch it running and let the uptime grow...:-)

    Sure, I will be happy when 2.4.0 is out for production use, maybe I wait until 2.4.2 is on the road, before switching any mission critical machines. I have no doubt, when Linus said it would be a pain for him do work with a 2.2.x kernel, that it will rock.

    2.2.x definitly does, the only problems I had so far, where all related to this crap cheap PC-Hardware someone mounts in a 19" rack and sells it to you as server. If it's possible I will try VA Linux next time...I don't think any OS delivered from Redmond has ever reached the stability that a Linux test/beta versions have.

    At least I have no problems waiting until Linus sais it's ready for primetime...:-)

    On Usenet I mentioned recently that two major distros (SuSE & RH) don't even have the real used init scripts in the same place...:-( Despite desktop problems, that maybe solved, I just mentioned a few days ago, I can start diskusage_applet under KDE, and have now the KDE and the gnome panel toogether....:-)

    I think distros should make special distros for desktop use, no uneeded services started would be a start. Windows user expect this dump klicking, the don't know about the massive power CLI can enable, or howto admin a multiuser, multitasking, multithreading, up to it's GUI network enabled, OS. The average windows user can't even control his Windows crap2001(tm). Very impotant IMHO is: Linux needs a good www browser, like IE is, one time they had some competition, and couldn't deliver the usual crap which might be repaired with the next service pack ~500 MB, or cost $$$ for the new shitload2003(tm)...:-))

    Honestly, without a good browser Linux will have no chance. And I'm in doubt if I would like it, since most people know, I use linux only, I don't get, those "help support please" calls from friends who use windows, anymore.

    thanks for the links, but I can't really find some infos on the Sony PCG-C1VN, I ordered it, but I still have to wait...:-(

    I thought this would be the only reasonable laptop for an Linux only user, like me. First I was not impressed you have to pay this M$ tax. Second I heard, that you have to fidle around with X and compile it new to get it running with the strange screen resolution the Picturbook has.

    If anyone has some links or hints, I would be very thankfull, I asked google, but it didn't find much usefull...

    You make some good points, but: There are several sites that i visit where they use self signed keys. There's nothing intristically valuable at those sites, so there's no point the owners having to pay VeriSign for a certificate.

    If you're doing e-commerce on a high traffic site you can't use selfsigned certs, most users will get curious, reject it, or write a mail to you. Do you want to answer dozens of email a day? No, you pay that VerySign tax and you have no problems....

    As for SSH, it's the admin only who chooses to implemt it poor, or spend some time on setting it up in a secure way...

    Yeah, they should make everything far cheaper, hire cheap stuff, not those like the crew from Apollo 11, who was easily able to bring the lander "eagle" safe down on the moon by hand, cause the automatic systems didn't brought them to a good area...

    They even should use only cheap crap PC with systems build in Redmond, after all it comes pre-installed with these shiny machines.

    And the cheap stuff they hired would be able to find the start button. During the so called "cold war", when money was not the issue for NASA, I can't remember one mistake like they made in a past mars mission with mixing up metric and the "american way" of units.

    Honestly, NASA == sience and you can't make money from it. If I were an american I had no problem with them taking some of the tax they take from me and donating it to NASA.

    Good read and he's IMHO right with every point!

    More than once he gave me a short hint in comp.security.ssh, that helped me get things done.

    You may knew how great this is, if you have a job like mine, sysadmin of a bunch of Linux servers, which get more and more every few weeks, cause your CTO likes that...:-(

    Nothing special, I just run X (1280 x 1024 /16bpp), the "CPU" of the card gets very warm, but there is a small, I would call it voltage regulator, with a passive heatsink attachet, that gets without cooling extrem hot, you can't even touch it....:-(

    I would say my voodoo3 2000 is a very nice card. One of the first supported by Xfree86 and OpenGL/mesa GLX GLU.

    I have a Voodoo3 3000 PCI, 2D perfomance is very good, I haven't tested 3D, I don't play any games. But I'm a bit disapointed about 3dfx, if they sell me a card that gets very hot and it was not the cheapest one, they should include some fans, I had to buy two, makes a lot of noice...:-(

    The US government scrambles GPS signals for a reason, you know

    Wrong: On 31.05.2000 the so calles SA (Selectivy Avaibilty) was shut down on advice of US President Clinton. It's an amazing accuracy since then. My GPS computes the estimated position error between 4 and 7 Meter...:-)

    Second point is: No civilian GPS receiver will work at speeds above ~900 Km/h, just too slow for nukes....

    From my Linux expirience (SuSE only), it gets better and better with every version, the first distro I bought (4.2) you had to modify modlines on your own just to get X running. If I remember right, it took me about one week to get the damn thing running.

    Today, with Yast2, you have everything running in about 15 min. or faster, if you're lucky and own a DVD, you don't even have to put in another CD every two min...:-)

    A few weeks ago I had to install W2K on a laptop, it was a pain, most time you were just sitting and waiting, cause you had to boot half the day...

    Didn't changed much since Win 3.0... Has anyone mentioned too: If you use Linux only, then sit short time in front of a windows box, your brain start telling you, wow, this system is so poor, why does anyone use it? Makes me think..OK, everyone gets what he/she deserves...

    Anyway, it doesn't matter much to me if Linux wins this silly desktop war...as long as it's userbase is big enough to get big $$ companies, like Adobe or Real, to give me those little plugins and apps, I need to be able, to never use any M$ crap...

    From what you write, I asume you're a home user.

    You should remember that many of us run Linux as server in mission critical services. We don't need no GUI or even USB support.

    Nice from the kernel folks that they provide this backport.You should just stop lamenting, after all you have the complete source tree...

    I'm beginning to wonder what future the Open Source movement has, if there's not way to legally enforce some piece of code's open-ness. I mean, how do you take M$ to court? Cmon! Gates carries around more money in his WALLET as spending cash than most Linux-developing companies have as net worth. I'm starting to doubt the supposed MS breakup will ever happen. There needs to be a legally unshakeable means to protect Open Source from Micro$oft's usual hijack move. Or at least, in a perfect world there would be.

    Probably you are right, but don't forget big blue, they could afford some suing of M$, even if it's just for the sake of it, or for helping great projects like apache, to get the source they use AFAIK to build the AIX webserver that's is IMHO based on apache...

    I myself can't imagine M$ to shift to Linux, wouldn't they admit, that the SW a "bunch of GNU developer", in my mind the best SW-Designer this world has to offer, makes, is far superior than all the crap M$ has made...

    I had/have some trouble with an UUNet customer who is an extrem spammer, he sends lot of mail, with large CC lists to an open relay in the .cn domain, we get the To: , cause it's for a domain we have the MX, most disturbing is of course that the open relays in .cn drop the CC and we get lots of angry mails from customer, who get those spam.

    I mailed UUNet, got a trouble ticket and it looked like they closed his account, but he just signs up a new one and it starts all over again.

    I mailed the admins in the .cn domain, that they close their open relay, but a short nmap scan showed me, that they are using M$ server with all ports open and have perhaps no clue how to close it, they just don't react on my mails...:-(

    Looks like I couldn't do much about it...Perhaps I should launch some DOS attacks to bring those M$ servers down, wouldn't be very friendly, I known, but it looks like, it could be the only thing I could try to prevent those spam...sad...

    Just lookup http://www.dv-job.de/, you can even select the area you like a job, based on postal information, last time I checked they had about 5000 jobs in IT. Most of them around Munich, Hamburg or Berlin.

    Just get rid of those stinking pictures, you don't need them, lynx will give you all you need, under CLI....,he,he...
