Only an American site could moderate this flamebait. Only in America...:(
Maybe if you get a Hitler once, or Gulags/KZs, like we had, you will stop seeing the millitary as something great and glorious. Hell, even the strongest criticizers of wars turn to raving freaks yelling “U.S.A U.S.A.” when among soldiers. What’s WRONG with you???
Remember: Whoever moderated this down, thinks killing other people is a great thing. You wouldn’t want to live in a country with such a guy, would you?
One thing missing is the personal factor. Even if the man you happen to kill is a real Taliban whose goal it is to destroy your country... He still has a loving family. He still has a sweet daughter missing her daddy. He still has parents, family and friends. He still probably also did much good for them.
Things are not black and white. Without those mullahs he would probably be a random farmer or teacher for his town. And without the US and Russia wrecking his country for decades (remember, there was a time when Afghanistan had the best irrigation system in the world, and everything was green, with huge watermelons and birds), he would maybe not feel so bad to turn to god and the mullahs in anger.
Know your enemy. The best warriors never even start a war. They turn their enemies into friends. And sometimes they already are friends, if you take a real look.
To get the right to eat a type of animal you must at least once a year kill an animal of that type only with caveman weapons. And then take the skin off and take it apart yourself. Let’s see how many pussies will then still eat meat.
For automated killing of humans the same rule is true, just that it’s hand-to-hand-combat. (And that it’s not recommended to eat him.;) Let’s see how many pussies then still will have the balls to do it.
I’ve got no problem with killing an animal in a fair fight while respecting the animal. It’s natural carnivore behavior. And I would never kill a human, except maybe if he murdered my children or wife. So this works out fine for me.
You live is such a disgusting delusional world, that you make me sick!
Who is “them”? HM? Do you really think the terrorists are some random people in some mountains who probably haven’t even gotten electricity?? Dude, you KILL OTHER HUMAN BEINGS! Dead. Murdered. For nothing! Have you ever seen someone die? Unless you have killed someone yourself, or were in Afghanistan, just shut the fuck up!
Now switch off the delusion, and think where the real evil people sit: - The mullahs in Iran and other Arabic countries. (NOT the population!) - Cheney, Monsanto, Haliburton, Eli Lily, and friends. (NOT the US population.) - North Korea’s leaders. - A hand full of other freaks around the world, including Mobutu and Putin.
If you want to do something good, and fulfill your perverse lust to murder other people, go and do it to them. With a special unit of agents. In a covert operation.
That’s what one gets for discussing such topics on a tech site.:(
“Why Flash?” would have been enough. As in “Why in the world would anyone ever use Flash?”
Or even shorter: “Flash?”. As in “What is that Flash of which you speak? Some ancient long dead web fad?” But unfortunately, that is not yet true. Yet.;)
Pff, Goatse will have a field day with that site! Until he finds the love of his life: Tubgirl. 4Chan even more so. Only they will hunt for children while wearing pedobear masks.
Uuuummm... Yes. That’s why in Germany, it is illegal to be a “contractor” with only one single client. Which means you already have to start with more than one, to not become illegal when starting your self-employment.
I never got why anyone would work as a contractor for only one client anyway. Isn’t the whole point of being a contractor, that you have more than one client, and that if one of them is a dick, you can say fuck you, and still work for your other clients? (= “fire one of your bosses”)
Whoohoo... we got a load of media moguls and their retard friends on the site, apparently. And they can’t take reality... well... obviously!:D
Well, to those modding facts down: I laugh in your face, cause you are doomed! And to those who still watch TV or a standalone TV: Welcome to the 21st century! Throw them away! Together with the wax cylinders, fax machines and telegraphing equipment!:D
You know, I just realized that there comes a time, when you have just outgrown Slashdot, and it starts to look... exactly like a very techy 4chan. Well, I also realized, that for me, that time is now. Cause when the trolls are in power, every normal person becomes a troll.
Yeah. INbiology. Because biologic life is the only life that could possibly arise. Ever.
Life is just an expanding (reproduction/growth) mass of something that processes/transforms some matter against the forces of thermodynamics (from chaos to order). That’s all.
It doesn’t even have to be physical matter. Data is just as fine. Or energy in other forms. Or simulated $something inside a computer.
Also, drawing a clear line between “life” and “not life” is the dumbest fuckin’ think ever. The second dumbest: Drawing a clear line between “intelligent” and “not intelligent”. Like: click, flip the switch, now this thing is alive and intelligent, flip the switch and you got a stone.;) Exaaaactly how nature is.;)
There is something, even on this planet, for every single point on the scale from 0% to 100% alive. And “life” is just a word, that humans used for thousands of years, without exactly knowing what they were meaning, anyway.
So let it just stay there, and accept that the whole discussion just abso-fuckin silly. ^^
P.S.: That’s the writing style you get, after watching all clips of Peanut available on the net, in one go!;)
Simple: It does in fact update Windows. Even automatically. And bad patches are not the update system’s fault. So it is better than having nothing at all. And does its job. That’s not that bad, is it?
You know. Most of those things look really, REALLY uncool. This one, with a bit of work, comes close to a batmobile. Not bad at all.
Of course, let’s see how it does as a 4-person+dog car going at 80 mph in a crash situation. It’s always much easier do do all this at low speeds and loads. My guess: 2752 mpg / 5 seats / (80 mph / 30 mph) = 206.4 mpg. ^^
Sorry, but your arguments, if one can call them that, are hair raising. First of all: KDE 3.5?? That’s phased out since what? A year? Why would you even bring that up, instead of KDE 4.4, which in street tests was shown to be so intuitive that people thought it was a good Windows 7.;)
Then you start the full scale Gnome fanboi evangelism. No arguments why you think it’s god’s gift from the heavens, but just a “everyone does it, and it is TEH BEST per se”. How again am I to take you seriously that way?:/
The KDE or Gnome (OR XFCE, or a ton of other options for that matter!!!) question is one of if it fits your needs. Every option has its strengths and weaknesses.
Gnome’s philosophy is that of making things simple, no matter what. It’s their biggest priority. So big in fact, that they often sacrifice freedom of choice for it, by just leaving no setting to change things. But for users who don’t know it better anyway, this is a great concept. Since they can trust someone with bigger competence on good choices. For a power user however, it’s just unbearable.
KDE, on the other hand, when forced to choose between freedom and simplicity, goes the other way. Freedom to configure seems to be their biggest priority. So big in fact, that sometimes, you get lost in the settings and options, and feel like it’s bloated. But for users who want their system to fit like a glove, this is a great concept. Since they can have exactly what they want. For a Jane Workerbee however, it’s just unbearable.
Of course it’s not that extreme in reality, and there are many gray areas. But that’s the major difference IMHO.
So in conclusion: Only a fool speaks in absolutes.* There simply is no absolute good or bad. Weigh the pros and cons, look at how they fit your needs, and make an educated choice.:)
This is perhaps the core problem: You seem to place yourself in a position where Linux is bad, and one would have to defend it.
The problem is, that people, especially your non-techie friends, will pick this view up and make it their own. That this isn’t good, should be clear.
Why not be honest: Linux really is pretty cool, isn’ it? Runs on pretty much every computer without trouble. Especially on old systems it runs way better than Windows. And look at all the cool things it offers that Windows will never have:
You can support them remotely, trough SSH. Write little scripts that makes their everyday problems go away.
Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin/Kopete, Amarok, a filemanager, Open Office maybe, and they are are happy. Those are mainly Linux programs anyway.
Complete updates never were easier. One click system updates of everything. And if you get in trouble, you have the biggest community possible. Hell, you can even write a mail to the guy who wrote that specific piece of the program, and tell him your opinion. Try that on Windows! ^^
There is no need to be defensive with Linux. None. Different does not mean bad.
There without exception always is a part in every change, that feels bad. That’s how we humans are wired. Like when you start doing something for the first time, and it feels bad without any logical reason. But after a time you wouldn’t want to miss it.
That phase would be there too, if one transitioned from Linux to Windows.
Now the important point For people to get over that hill, they have to know and have a safe feeling, that this is a good choice, why that is so, and there is just a transition phase to overcome. So your job is, to be secure in yourself, so that they can pick that up too.
An example:
Wrong:
You: Sorry, I will convert your PC to Linux. Don’t worry about the problems, they are not that bad.
Friend: No! I don’t want to have problems!
You: But it is better because of X. I’ll install it anyway.
(later)
Friend: Hey, that shit you installed me is bad and caused problems! You suck!
Right:
You: Hey, I got a great solution for your virus and usage problems! Look here (*show compiz video*), doen’t that look really cool?
And viruses can’t even attack you with it! It doesn’t have all those stupid problems that annoy you on Windows. But I don’t know if you can live without that.;)
Friend: Hey, sounds great. Can I try it?
Yu: Maybe. If you don’t expect it to be Windows. You know: Just as crappy.;)
Friend: Please!
You: Allright. I’ll install it, so you can try it out.
(later)
Friend: Hey, I got this problem, but I’m used to it, and don’t want to give up and go back to Windows! Can you help me?
You: Sure. Can you double click on the icon on the desktop that says “Let me look at your computer”, and read the number it shows to me?
Friend: Yes it’s $ipAddress.
You: Ok, I’m quickly checking what’s wrong. A OK, found it.:)
Friend: Thank you. And hey: Your new Windows Linux is pretty cool.
[Disclaimer for US Americans: If you confuse my argumentation with that of creationist retards, you definitely misunderstood me. I understand why. Because they misuse arguments such as these for their base motives. As you see below, I go very much against them. His biggest failure was a basic architectural assumption of Wikipedia. The assumption of “the one global truth(iness)”. This caused him to make Wikipedia a centralized and centrally controlled site, instead of a P2P system.
Of course this was based on very good intentions, and originally not a problem, since everyone could edit everything. Because with those assumptions, how could there ever be two people disagreeing with each other? Ever?;))
Naturally there were people who disagreed. And naturally they found the one main reason why one can only theoretically but not realistically assume a global truth: Because sometimes it is simply impossible to find out which view is really true. E.g. because no one of them got a time machine handy, to fly back into the past, and see for himself. Or because resolving it with quantum physics is not yet possible without calculations taking anything less than billions of years. And because of course in physics, everything is defined relative to other things.
But even this could have been resolved by educated people with a knowledge of physics and logic, trough simply stating what it proven to what level (e.g. an experiment, a video clip, just a theory, just speculation), and leaving the side-taking with the cavemen. Unfortunately there are people, that are unable to discuss things reasonably. (E.g. aforementioned religious fundamentalists.)
So the idea of one global truth had to die. But what replaced it, was even worse: The people who control Wikipedia started to just accuse everybody who disagreed, of being unable to discuss things reasonably, and the deletion and flame wars started. This is the sad state that Wikipedia is in now. Everything is controlled, approved, and doubly approved. By a group of people who sometimes just don’t know what they are even talking about.
See, the point of a P2P Wikipedia would not have been, to make every crazy bullshit out there equal. But to give them there own sandbox, way away from us, where they could play, and not disturb us. Like Conservapedia: It does no harm, even though it is out there, because everybody knows how silly it is, and just laughs at it.
Wales hat very good intentions and a great idea. But he was waay deep in treehugger happy happy imaginationland with some of those descisions. And I also was there with him for some time. Until I took a harder look at reality. ^^
Actually, depending on your p.o.v., there is no such thing as bias or facts. Because there are no absolutes in nature, except in mathematics. Everything is relative. Every information is filtered, interpreted and processed a billion times. And always relative to the processor’s standpoint.
What you call “facts” is what fits your inner model and comes from trusted sources. What you call bias, are simply points of view that differ from yours. That’s all there is to it. Which means that actually it does not matter, since you can always get out the useful bits that fit your reality, by knowing the standpoint of the sources, and interpreting things accordingly.
(Denying all this, because you thought all your life, that there are absolute truths, won’t make it go away. You can of course develop another explanation that fits you better. But will it improve your life more than this one?:)
About your comment’s actual content: I agree, since it nicely fits my inner model, and your comment shows no signs of trustworthiness or inconsistencies visible to me.
See, Linux/BSD systems have this nice thing called a ‘package manager”. And since all software is free, you essentially have a nice “app store”-like interface, where you can install everything (out of currently over 13,000 packages here on Gentoo) you like.
Then when you want to update things, you can just call one global update program, and be done with it. Everything that has an update available, will be updated. With tons of options on what you want to block, what you want to allow despite it being marked as unstable, etc, etc, etc.
After a while, when your rule set is stabilizing, and you routinely do those updates, you start to feel the natural need to automate it. (Unfortunately, most Windows users lack that need, since they are trained to use a PC like an appliance.) So you automate it.
Now of course, big companies get all wet or stiff down there, when they see such a system. But since there is no such thing for Windows, they try to imitate it with such a download manager. Badly.
But since everyone rolls his own thing, does not give you any control, and they don’t understand all aspects of package management anyway, you get a mess of tons of stupid background processes doing stupid (and sometimes useful) things without asking you.
This is a opportunity that Microsoft clearly missed. Sure, they have Windows Update, which is not that bad and does the job for Windows itself, plus some drivers. But they should have offered a real package manager, and allow others to integrate into it. That would have given them big plus points from companies and users.
And now we’re in the mess. But hey: You can still make some room and install a beginner-friendly Linux distribution, to go to, when you start pulling hairs again.:)
Sure, it’s not perfect. But the fact that it instantly reminds me of natural cycles (which are very efficient), where nothing is wasted, is a sure sign that this is a good thing.
That’s called a package manager! Like paludis/portage/ports/APT/pacman/pkgsrc/yum/urpm/etc. Look it up.
I think package management is such an important and well done part of Linux, that one could add it to the properties, for which the following is true: “Those who don't understand Unix are doomed to reinvent it, poorly.”:)
1. Buy cheap gloves und wear them. 2. Steal HS gun. 3. Shoot Cheney. 4. Put HS gun back. 5. Burn gloves 6. Give the media a anonymous tip. 7. Rinse, and repeat (with another real douche) 8. Watch them beat the shit out of each other with accusations. 9. Be quick, before they can react with new rules. 10. PROFIT.;)

But hey: You can still make some room and install a beginner-friendly Linux distribution, to go to, when you start pulling hairs again.
...with the cycles of life...
Yeah baby!
Sure, it’s not perfect. But the fact that it instantly reminds me of natural cycles (which are very efficient), where nothing is wasted, is a sure sign that this is a good thing.
We need more like this!
Or unless you want to optimize your programs. (A must for all professional software and games.)
This should be an eye-opener, if you don’t know it already:

This is definitely a huge point. Even for things like Java software for mobile phones!
...was learning Haskell! Even if you do it just for the sake of learning it. (Especially since that great new book came out last year.)
My code is on a whole different level now, since I have seen the Matrix. :)
Next step: QED, by Richard Feynman. (Should be a piece of cake now. ^^)
an application store for Alex
That’s called a package manager! Like paludis/portage/ports/APT/pacman/pkgsrc/yum/urpm/etc. Look it up.
I think package management is such an important and well done part of Linux, that one could add it to the properties, for which the following is true: :)
“Those who don't understand Unix are doomed to reinvent it, poorly.”
1. Buy cheap gloves und wear them. ;)
2. Steal HS gun.
3. Shoot Cheney.
4. Put HS gun back.
5. Burn gloves
6. Give the media a anonymous tip.
7. Rinse, and repeat (with another real douche)
8. Watch them beat the shit out of each other with accusations.
9. Be quick, before they can react with new rules.
10. PROFIT.
* With the exception of extra lives and respawning, of course.
Why? You can certainly still gain the Hindu achievement! :)
