No good can come out of Amnesty, or Thinking about amnesty or Thinking in general about anything.
Sniff your Windows Update traffic to see where you are getting the patches from: On my computer they were coming from : 206.112.112.62 and 206.112.112.54. When I ran a nmap Scan on these 2 IP address, I found that these servers are running Linux. Below is the output from running NMAP. # nmap -O 206.112.112.62 Starting nmap V. 3.00 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) Remote operating system guess: Linux 2.1.19 - 2.2.20 # nmap -O 206.112.112.54 Remote operating system guess: Linux 2.1.19 - 2.2.20
cognitive dissonance: A condition of conflict or anxiety resulting from inconsistency between one's beliefs and one's actions, such as:
- opposing the slaughter of animals and eating meat; or
- Microsoft using Linux Server to distribute Critical Patches for MS Windows ???
Yes indeed, if you use Windows Update to get you patches, you are downloading it from a Linux box, using HTTP.
maybe i should get a license. when SCO goes outta biznez (i.e. all the execs sell their stocks), i can sell on ebay for atleast $1400...... there is a bright side to every problem;)
The concept of single is good. but i hate the idea of using commercial/proprietary/closed-source technology like netegrity's siteminder to implement authentication on my application/servers. What happen if siteminder goes belly-up or they triple the siteminder's licenses???? Nothing is stopping them from doing that. Then my application will secured by a technology that i can NOT afford to license......
I m taking a WebServices class at a university, and.NET Visual Studio is a requirement, and all the projects will be done in.NET.
The Reason:.NET is easier to install and work with since it is GUI based.
Real Life developing doesn't always include a nice GUI. What about making Student learn the whole technology stack, from installation to configuration to usage????
I remember when I was in school for my undergrad we were made to install our own instances of Objectivity and Oracle and other Java related stuff before we started doing our projects, so that we learn the whole technology stack, and not just click our way through a GUI.
And I think I learned a lot more, when I fully understood the underlying technology.
Offcourse if I consolidate all my server/services on Windows 2003, I will make sure it is always patched up and behind a highly secure firewall, Intrusion detection system, and honey pots if applicable;)
That is very valid argument. I didn't think of that.
However with MS Virtual Server, there are 2 components (2003 and MS Virtual Server) that are locking into a vendor. On the other hand, in the Linux + VMware GSX solution, there only one component (vmware GSX) that is locking us in a vendor
Actually ESX technology is not based on either:
The following is a passage from http://www.vmware.com/products/server/esx_faqs.htm l:
"VMware's patented and patent-pending technology serves as the foundation for VMware ESX Server; it is not derived from Linux or FreeBSD."
However vmware's GSX technology can run on either Linux or Windows.
well they didnt actually "produced" the virtual server, they just bought the technology from Connectix. So we should be evaluating how good of product Connectix produced.
MS will stop supporting NT4 if it hasn't yet already, nevertheless there are applications that run only on NT. So businesses will be running NT - whether they use it in a Virtual Evironment or not is a different question.
Software Engineering is not just there yet. It is a nice concept, but not pratical. Rational Rose does it to a certain extent.

success depends on the emergence of online communities to support individual courses.
However I also think the success depends on improvement to the courses based on the community response.
Isn't this the philosophy all open-source, open-standard etc are based on?
After reading the sample chapter @ oreilly, it seems like a good book fo beginners. I if you have involved in sysadmin/sys security, this book might be too basic for you. Just my thoughts. www.xml-dev.com
Including Solitair in the MadHatter might make things easier for MS certified people. Just Kidding :)

no pictures? anyone has links to the pictures?
Current ones are too conspicuous and expensive. And geeky!!!
nmap is not for sniffing
nmap is for scanning ports.
who said i used NMAP for scanning.????

I made a mistake in the posting. I meant vmware GSX (which runs on Linux) and not vmware ESX

I m sorry, I mentioned vmware ESX in the article, but instead it is GSX that is supported on Linux.
ESX directly runs on System Hardware (kinda like an OS by itself) and is not based on Linux or BSD Kernel.

spam is becoming a problem like pollution.... we can not get rid of it, so we will just have to live with it :(
http://www.xml-dev.com
doesn't that mean turning off the power to computer, and deassembling it, and taking apart the HardDrive so that no data is recoverable?
sorry i meant SVG to AfterStep XML. Thanks.
