    Yep, for intro to electrical & computer engineering we had to make all the basic functions (AND, OR, XOR) out of NAND gates. From memory you make a NAND out of two transistors. It was obviously the most 'edge of the seat' exciting experience I've had ;) We were also told that there's whole books entirely dedicated to optimisations based on NAND logic units. *shudders*

    I'd have to agree. If you lay good copper, you'll get better speeds anyhow, if you're using the 2.4GHz band, every time around dinner there'll magically be no speed in the network thanks to Mr Microwave. 7K would easily cover all your infrastructure, you could even slurge on a sweet intranet games/file server ;)

    It just looks a bit like 'lets shake down some big users of linux and see who is stupid enough to buy a licence' time.

    SCO and co. have a habit of making baseless threats, and threats that they dont follow thru with. I just hope that no one is stupid enough to fall for it.

    for an easy to use mud/moo client i totally agree. Its not overloaded with features and being in Tcl/Tk means its portable too. On a side not, when i found a bug with it and how it was handing certain commands causing it to lockup the display, the author replied quickly to my email and even organised a time to jump on the moo and talk to me about it so i could explain and demonstrate it.

    www.php.net has all the software you need, although you might need a few other things, but they are free too.

    The customisation might take a while tho i guess ;)

    However, providing a good option for migration is, which is why multi-protocol chat programs is important.

    If we can work together to make a client (and there's plenty out there such as GAIM etc) that is as user-friendly and easy to install as MSN, then it would go a long way to solving this problem.

    The new MSN has gimics to get ppl to use it, like integrated games, once you have a protocol defined surely it wouldnt be too hard to have a nicely defined API so people could write add-ons?

    Control.

    If i'm using MSN Messenger to chat to my friends, i'll be using the same resources as if i connect via trillian. So, the cost is EXACTLY the same. This therefore can NOT be the root of the decision.

    Its control. Microsoft have always demonstrated that they want to control the way users experience the internet, and as such do anti-competitive things, such as this, to ensure no one can wrestle control away from them.

    Solution? Use free* chat protocols, and give-up some of your time to help less computer savvy users migrate away from MSN.

    I had the misfortune of having a dedicated server with them for 2 long years. The machine would lock up frequently, and i'd have to make a 30min call from Australia to the US to listen to their on hold crap so i could talk to a tech and then try and convince him to hit the big red button.

    CI Host has a huge marketing and sales department and tiny tech support division. Dont you dare, ever, believe a word of their marketing crap. They suck. Pure and simple. They've cost me thousands because of the clients i've lost because of their incompetence. Some of the people are nice enough but they simply dont have the technical skills of other places.

    I'm now with rackspace.com and they kick arse!

    I didnt check the javascript but one would assume the target (action section of the form) should be some form of script/CGI program surely.

    Looks like all you US ppl will have to just call that 1800 number a second time for the rest of us!

    The latest revision of the SMTP protocol (rfc2821.txt) has support for IPv6.

    If security is an issue, you can always use SMTP over SSL, and there is some support to allow authentication.

    In a nutshell? I dont think SMTP is going anywhere in the next few years.

    When will this stuff finally be ironed out?
    When people stop the whining and start the contributions. If you cant code, you can always work an extra hour flipping burgers, and send the extra $5 to tridge or one of the other members of the samba team.

    At the VERY least, email one of them telling them how appreciative you are of the work they are doing and to keep up the great work.

    Its like most OpenSource projects, so either stop the whining or ask for a refund.

    Thankfully i'm not from the US, but i've heard more than just a few murmourings that many past conflicts (including desert storm) were motivated by $$$ than a genuine concern for peace etc.

    They would be forced to claim the sale as income.

    When a hard drive comes back in, that is a loss. So what they might be trying to do is to limit their possible losses.

    It makes sense that any mechanical device is more likely to fail over the first three years, rather than just the first 12 months when its the newest, so they are just trying to be less liable for a failure.

    Good ol' capitalism, maximise profits by taking away from the consumers who have no power to stop you.

    Microsoft Windows (as distinct from generic windows that have been around for ... err... ever) is far from a "stable and consistant" development platform ... I've done (under duress)a fair bit of development under VB and VBA, and especially the later sometimes work, sometimes dont. Sometimes the IDE crashes, sometimes it'll let you work for more than 20mins at a time. Contrast that with my linux box and developing C/C++ code using VIM/G++ ... if it doesnt work, I know I stuffed up...

    That or I need to recompile the libraries cause the package mantainer didnt like my machine.
