  1. Re:Stephen Conroy on Australian ISPs Soon To Become Copyright Cops · · Score: 1

So the 68% [1] of Australians that do profess to be Christian should not partake in the federal elections? Nor have representation of their choosing? The 72.8% of people that profess a religious belief should stand aside and let themselves be dictated to by a minority?

Also, don't forget that your 28% (27.2% according to [1]) also includes people who didn't answer the religion question adequately (poor handwriting etc.), so the number of 68% Christians, should be considered the *minimum* percentage of society that expresses a belief that they're Christian (similarly for the other religions).

It's a democracy. Deal with it. Start your own party if you like, the AEC [2] would be glad to help you, that's what they're there for.

For the record, I'm a Christian and I don't vote for specifically Christian parties because they're all conservative and I'm liberal.I disagree with much of the policy of the Christian parties as it pertains to technology. I still fail to see how the Christian lobby is the problem. It's successive ministers from both parties who have shown, on a global stage, that they are utterly uneducated and inept in the realm of modern technology.

It's about technology and government, not religion.

  2. Its not the kernel that's lagging behind on Know Any Hardware Needing Better Linux Support? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's user-space support and integration. While I've got a CS degree and can get things going myself, most people don't and can't. Telling them they need to upgrade some part of the kernel and do a recompile isn't going to do much for people. Much more work needs to be done along Ubuntu's philosophy of "it should just work". If it's easier to get working in windows, people will just use windows. I'm very happy to see that more and more hardware is becoming easier to get going under linux than windows, like my HP 3055 all-in-one unit.

If kernel developers have time they want to commit, but can't find anything to do, my humble suggestion is:
    - Pulling in other drivers into the main kernel tree
    - Testing, Optimisation & QA
    - Consider working on user-land drivers such as USB devices.

As for the overall goal of supporting users, I think cutting down the time between software/driver release and packaging is critical. This is of course a distro issue, and a very good reason as to why too many distributions is a bad idea. Co-operation on common goals and focusing of efforts is one weakness I've found in FOSS, at the same time it's also a strength, but it's something to be mindful of in a less regimented development process.

So when the media reports that a court convicts someone of shooting another person dead they're wrong too? They should be pedantic and ALWAYS specify the crime rather than the action that was criminal?

You're convicted of an action resulting in a specific crime, shooting someone -> murder, Breach of GPL -> Breach of Copyright.

If the courts DIDN'T find they'd breached the GPL then they wouldn't have breached copyright. Of course without the GPL their distribution would have been enough to convict them, but the judge had to rule that they lost their rights to distribute under the GPL for breach of it.

I agree with the first part of your post ... Were I the person making the decisions, that would be my motivation.

A lot of soldiers just won't understand the impact that a bit of intel can make. Something that they see as harmless may infact give just enough information to the enemy to help them make their attacks more effective. More effective attacks mean more dead civilians and soldiers. Delay it by 6 months until they get home and it loses it's usefulness.

It was easier for the armed forces in the world wars, people could only send letters, and they could easily be carefully screened and censored. I think this is a valid reaction to a world where information can be posted and distributed instantly.

I installed all the drivers and extra packages that it needed (not particularly easy too, he had to walk me through it) and it simply kept crashing the PC when i used OpenGL stuff. Needless to say i told him "no thanks"

After that, several power issues experienced by friends, and driver issues under windows as well, I only buy and use nVidia. All but one of my tech-savy flatmates have followed suit.

Enjoy your X700, the performance is pretty sweet and its not a bad card, its just a shame the drivers, especially the linux drivers, are a let down.

They seemed quite unsure in themselves about what you could and couldn't do with MySQL (being GPLed) and the MySQL API which was (at least at the time) LGPLed.

I think this sort of article could be a good way for MySQL AB to find out how much support they'll loose if they turn around and change the licence ... that or how long it'll take for people to fork a free version.

If they become non-free I'll gladly move to PG ... ppl are telling me i should anyhow!

I totally agree, it seems stupid that christians would reject the idea.

One thing i like about F/OSS is that it is more closely aligned to my philosophies as a christian. Freedom of choice, helping each other out, doing something because you're able to not for what you can get out of it ... etc. ... Contrast this with the monopolist "Greed is good, lets squeeze them for cash" view point.

I was really annoyed when my church spent as much on microsoft software as it did on hardware for a new computer. Sure you might have helpers not knowing initially how to use AbiWord/ OOo ... but it isnt hard to use, and people will learn what they use. Some of the people at my church cant even use MS-office, so why not start them off on the free alternative?

I think christians in germany should write to the CSU and ask what part of christian theology conflicts with linux. My condensed version of theology is "love God, love others" ... how is linux and F/OSS failing to show love to either God or others?

    Crazy politics i guess.

The wording of the story, and most of the replies i've read have shown me that while most of us want everyone to have free software (as in freedom) we still dont respect people's right to be free to believe what they want, no matter how much we might disagree.
