  1. Re:Personal Experiences with Drive Replacement on Tom's Investigates Hard Drive Warranty Changes · · Score: 1
You cannot expect the warranty cycle to provide you with a new, faster, bigger drive. They don't do that.

Not entirely true. I purchased a 4 GB Western Digital hard drive in mid-1997 which failed after 6 months. WD warranty provided me with a new 5 GB hard drive because they stopped making the 4 GB version. Happy to say the 5 GB drive is still running fine for over 4 years now.

    It's a crapshoot.

I would suspect that EchoStar is probably licensing an MPEG decoder. Not to mention the code to run TIVO. So there's no way they could release this as completely GPL since they don't own it all to begin with.

  5. Ghost it on Is Linux or Windows Easier To Install? · · Score: 1

Or do what I do, use Norton Ghost to reinstall the OS. Just make a clean install the first time, Ghost it, and you can have a fresh install in under 20 minutes. Works like a charm. Even so, Windows installs are still easier on the casual user than Red Hat. Article was flamebait if you ask me.

  6. "Could" ? on Playstation 3 CPU Almost Finished? · · Score: 2, Insightful

"...could enter production in 2004" "...could end up inside the PlayStation 3" Doesn't sound too definitive that the PS3 will get this chip does it? This is just more marketing and hype from what I read. I also really doubt that Intel will be standing still for the next two years, so the comparison to today's processors is completely worthless.

  7. YOUR problem with HB1 visas... on 235,000 Software Engineers Can't Be Wrong, Right? · · Score: 1

Look I've worked with several guys on visa from India, and not one of them ever complained about "indentured servitude". In fact they made competitive salaries and were really happy for the opportunity to work here. Most of them go for US citizenship which can take several years so, yes, they will have to work for the same company for that time period to maintain their status. But at the same time all were completely qualified in their field, eager to work, and frankly worked harder at their jobs than most. That was by personal choice not because anyone in the company made them do it.

  9. Re:Have you played Atari today? on Atari's 30th Anniversary · · Score: 1

Probably didn't have too much to do with the development. Interplay was the original publisher. Infogrames manufactured and marketed the game according to the box. So I wonder what Atari did to get their name on it?

  10. Do you guys ever read the articles posted here? on Is Linux Dead? · · Score: 2

I read the summary then promptly read the MSNBC article. The summary and the article do not have anything in common. The article was fairly well balanced, while the /. summary was biased and drew faulty conclusions from the article. In the future it would help if the person submitting the article would read it first. That goes for the /. editors as well.

Just the facts... ...IBM lost business because the computer clones were cheaper, not because people didn't want to buy an IBM computer due to poor public perception over an old antitrust case. Also, IBM had an open architecture that was easy to copy for a startup company. ...IBM's antitrust problems were unrelated to the personal computer business. Microsoft's are direclty related. IBM did not suffer the same negative perception by consumers. ...Microsoft's .NET strategy removes any need for the Windows registry for applications. If this strategy ever sees the light of day that is. Granted the registry was a bad idea but then steps are being taken to correct this over time.
