So you copied your post here from Digg and forgot to edit out the nasty bits?

  2. A boon for twisted pair or coax on HomePNA Achieves 320Mbps With Copper · · Score: 1

So this looks to matter mostly to those with 4-wire phone lines, with one pair used for telephone. I can dig it. I doubt that anyone would run new coax for networking in their house, but they might just luck into it from a previous owner.

  4. This makes absolutely no sense on CEO Calls For AOL Paradigm Shift · · Score: 4, Insightful

FTFA: Under the new plan, almost everything AOL offers -- its content, software and AOL.com e-mail addresses -- will be available to any Web user free.

Even my mother who has had broadband for only a year now knows user@aol.com == newbie. She knows better than to pay attention to mails from there declaring "Important, new email virus alert!!!" as these people are still wet behind the ears.

Given the number of CDs AOL has sent out, and the negative response to their bloated dial-up software, I don't think people will be scrambling to aol.com to get their hands on the latest.

So why would anyone go to AOL.com? The article leaves me unconvinced. About the only thing I can agree with is the CEO's statement about it is going to get worse (before it gets better, but there is no guarntee of that)

  5. Movie Theater Piracy story on Prototype System Blocks Digital Cameras · · Score: 2, Funny

A couple years ago, movie theaters started offering a bounty for alerting them to bootleggers in the act. For the first time, I saw two security agents standing on either side of the movie screen - not so discreetly looking at the audience with their night vision/IR goggles.

So I decided I'd give them a show and told my Nokia to send all contacts via IR. I did it about every ten minutes and I knew it was getting security's attention. But I just didn't appreciate them watching me watch a movie. Kinda creepy, you know?

If it matters, the movie was Spiderman 1, and I haven't been watched since, but I just wanted to relay my little civil disobedience story.

  7. Fallen out of love w/ TiVo on TiVo May Be a Buyout Target · · Score: 2, Insightful

I bought my TiVo series 2 the week it was released. I think it was about $300, plus activation at $250. (Also added a huge, at the time, 100GB second drive) At first, I was amazed at this little box. But as Echostar has shown, there is no pixie dust that can't be duplicated and there have been some missteps by TiVo. I'll list a few - The large popup ads that took up the screen and wouldn't go away - Misplaced copy protection - Routinely taking away the 30 second skip - The double button press in v7.2 that only now seems close to being fixed - The recent removal of lifetime subscription options I like how easy to use the TiVo is, but others are catching up. I've used other PVRs and they're not half bad. The only huge advantage I see w/ my TiVo is I can transfer recordings to my desktop.

  8. CEO of Exigen Group on The Type-A, High-Tech Bathroom · · Score: 1

I knew that I didn't like the first guy they interviewed for this piece. In TFA, he claims to have a blackberry, two cell phones, three office computers, wireless internet for his car, a speakerphone in his shower, a waterproof laptop, and is able to answer the front door from the bathroom. Then I googled his company... "Exigen Group is a provider of business process optimization services, technology and outsourcing that generates financial returns for our clients. " Now it makes sense. He's one of those asshats that uses technology to send our jobs overseas.

  9. Apex buys Sony next? on Going, Going, Gone: IBM Sells PC Group To Lenovo · · Score: 5, Insightful

Wow, hard to think the IBM Thinkpad I'm typing on now will be made by the Wal-Mart of computer manufacturers. The FA mentions that Lenovo doesn't spend much on R&D, doubtful they would make drives that survive the 6' fall IBMs do. In my circles, IBM laptops are known as "expensive", "tought", and "secure". Especially since many of them come with BIOS locked biometrics. Sad to see this happen, but I guess the PC market is going commododity.

  10. Ashley Simpson on UK Music Industry Sees Record Sales · · Score: 1

um, NEXT! But seriously, if this isn't USB powered, then it is absolutely no good for a notebook traveler. I can see wanting to catch some local tv while out of pocket, but to carry around this, an antenna, and a wall wart. Too much kit. I know Hauppauge has a USB one that is USB powered. Even if the quality is just ok, it would be a better solution.

  13. Sting.com on Publisher Renames 'Katie.com' · · Score: 3, Interesting

Has anyone else noticed that Sting.com, once a website for a computer game fanatic is now the official web-page of Sting, the artist? A quick look, shows typical rock-ego, with quotes from the artist himself, a ton of flash, etc. Any idea how this was finally handed over? Did the guy at least get paid?

  15. not ripped off... on I, Robot Hits the Theaters · · Score: 1

  16. Some spoilers on I, Robot Hits the Theaters · · Score: 3, Informative

First off, you don't get the Markie Mark full frontal that people had talked about. The Fresh Prince spends some time in the shower, but no salami... His character, Spoon hates Robots, mostly because one chose to save him rather than a 14 year-old girl from drowing. Their cold calculating nature disturbs him. Now for the huge spoilers...you've been warned. This is both a detective whodunnit and a robots take over the world movie. The robots do their best to kill Will and cover up the evidence so he appears dilusional. There are a bunch of very clever moments where you realize that whoever is pulling the strings is sadistic and calculating. For example, Spoon's elderly mom wins a special edition gold NS-5 in the lottery, right when Will realizes the robots are out to get him. There are moments where it borrows from the i-told-you-so genre of cop movies. His chief takes away his badge, the other officers mock him for thinking outside the box, etc. The robot that might have killed the USR scientist, Sonny, has a very developed character. Even Spoon ends up liking him. This film depends a lot on the Ghost in the Machine philosophy. In fact, there are two positronic brains in this film that don't mind bending the almighty three rules. Yes, everyone swore that the 3 rules were infallible, but they do get broken. One as a result of "evolution", the other because its creator gave it free will. This was an incredible film, definitely will be going in my collection when it comes out on DVD. It was part Minority Report, part Matrix 1. My prediction is a majority of positive reviews. Thanks for reading, hope you were entertained a little. Sorry if I gave too much away....

  18. DIVX does make sense on Custom DVDs & Players For Academy Members · · Score: 5, Insightful

    1) No one has ever successfully cracked the scheme. 2) The players could easily be manufactured again 3) The dial-up "feature" can be used to verify the academy award members are the ones watching the movie. I hated DIVX when it came out, but I can understand the studios wanting to protect their content, at least until the movie is out of the theatres. I can wait for the DVD like a good consumer, no need to pay bootleggers for someone elses work. Unless it is the original Star Wars DVD when Han shoots first.

  23. Ridiculous lawsuit by a software tester on VoteHere Whistleblower Suit · · Score: 5, Insightful

He was there less than six months, and he filed over 250 error reports, often citing them as being priority one. Now anyone who has worked closely with testers know that the good ones are like gold and the bad ones can only bog down the system. And how much loyalty does a company have to a six month employee anyway? Especially one that comes in doing things in his way (citing standards, but those can always be interpreted in many ways) Last time I checked, we were employment at will, and if he wanted to be considered a "whistleblower", he would have done it 1.5 years ago and to a goverment or news agency. A little on my background.. I've been with my current employer just over six months after getting laid off for the second time after college. A lot of that time was learning how their systems work and improving those I understood. I've seen people come and go in that brief time that thought they knew it all and that they were going to shake things up. Problem is, they didn't want to work with people, they wanted to do things their way, other peoples opinions be damned. Andto some extent it is unfortunate that this guy was able to get a settlement from the company. I bet they, and others aware of the lawsuit, are going to think twice before hiring someone who is legitimately energetic and wants to improve the system.
