DVD burners are now a reality. Back in 1998, when we were fighting the good fight against Divx, Disney wouldn't release anything on DVD. We rallied on websites like www.hometheaterforum.com and the now defunct dvdforum.com. We'd make visits to Circuit City to see what kind of lies...er marketing they were using and try to inform the public that their ability to own a licensed copy of a film was in jeopardy.
So even if you think this is a good idea just because you and use your Studio 3-2-1 software again, think of the consequences. Disney does not want you to be able to own a DVD, they came into the fold kicking and screaming before "Disney DVD" became a reality.
In 1998, the public obviously wasn't ready to accept time destruct DVDs and Divx failed. But this is yet another attempt to get the public to accept the rental-only model. Just because you can burn a backup (for now) doesn't make it any less sinister.
I just got off with "customer support" at Mitsumi for their bluetooth adapter. Their stance is the WIF-0402C never was supposed to be released in the USA, so they aren't supported here. I was referred to http://mitsumi.co.jp. That should be useful.
Did anyone actually get these two to play with each other? I'm still trying to, but on the verge of giving up. I heard that the Widcomm drivers were good, but I only received Mitsumi's lousy suite.
If anyone has figured this out, I'd love to see a how-to.
Considering I'm paying for the high speed connection and the storage, and it is only viewable w/in a 24 hour period (once started), it should be cheaper than blockbuster or hollywood video. Not so, I guess.
I've found portable USB drives to be a godsend. The model I ended w/, a Storix (Toshiba drive), runs at USB 2.0 speed, is powered by USB, slightly larger than its 2.5" drive size, and gave me 40GB for $200.
I purchased a Daewoo 5800 from Sam's Club for a whopping $89! Then I went to Nerd-out.com to get the iso file necessary to make it both Region Free and turn off Macrovision. It does indeed turn off Macrovision, but I haven't tested the Region Free. For what it's worth, some DVDs reject Region Free players, but this one doesn't allow that.
Some other benefits:
-A very nice mp3 player screen
-Component and composit outputs
-Coaxial digital out
-Nice silver finish despite its cheap price
Now, some people sell them on Ebay, after doubling the price, but really it is easy. The only negative on this player is the remote doesn't work unless it is aimed directly at the player. A simple fix is a good learning remote.
I love rolling my own, but now I limit myself to PCs contained in my house. In the past, I have put together for friends and collegues (with no profit for myself) and had problems.
The biggest complaint: "too loud of fans". I've noticed that Dells sometimes make plastic ducts to redirect fans from the transformer to processor heatsink. Interesting if you could do that yourself.

Okay, now I believe this guy works for Best Buy.
Last time I checked, microdrive was faster.
Thanks for the memories! I think a lot of us got started in the mall stores.
So where can I get the ISO files for SuSE? Seems like a smarter way to deal with overloaded Redhat servers.
EXCELLENT comment, mod this guy up!

Thanks.
I can't wait until tomorrow. I'm going to Best Buy and taking whatever advice the sales associate offers.
Even after the $250 lifetime you're still price competative. Looks like we're getting into the free razor, sell the blades business model.
"If you think and 45 is a gun, your too young to understand this post"
You mean "you're", old wise one...
Maybe we should complain about how crappy the film itself was.
