It does sort of hit the "paranoia" button...first the "convenien" DDOS of Demonoid, now Wikileaks....if it *is* taken down, after the DDOS, it will definitely make people wonder who has hired some group to do the dirty work that the IP Industrial Complex would like done....
Noir by J W Jeter. Imagine if the *AA organizations got their way, and made copyright infringment a capital offence...and the people who police IP law are like Bladerunners...it's a very good book, both a satire of Cyberpunk/Bladerunner, and RIAA/MPAA rhetoric....but it is TANJ DEPRESSING!!!!
But they are not very realistic. In sword fighting, that slight twist of the wrist makes all the differnce between a kiling blow, and a glancing blow, and that would translate well to, for example, golf or hockey. A small twist of the wrist when swinging a golf club makes the difference betweeen a shot that goes onto the fairway, or into the rough. Most golf games only measure the swing, not the angle the club hits the ball at. That would be the same for hockey as well.
The main charactor in Snowcrash, Hiro Protagonist, is known as the best swordfighter in the Metaverse. So, obviously, his interest in swordfighting predates his most recent work. Hiro, besides actually knowing how to use a sword in the real world, also wrote the template sword fighting code for the Metaverse. I guess Neil Stephenson is looking for that "edge".:-)
Besides, a good generalized real-time controller framework will enable many types of gaming besides swordwork...the code should be similar enough to enable things like baseball bats, hockey sticks, and golf clubs.
Too many job ads are looking for insane amount of skills in one person...They ask for a "Unix Admin" person who knows how to code in C++, C#, manage an Asterisk server, install mange & tune 1000 RHEL servers, use NAGIOS, maintain a SAP system, automate sysadmin tasks using bash/ksh/perl/PHP/C/C++, setup and manage IIS & Apache, admin websphere & coldfusion, install manage and tune Windows 2003/2008/2008R2, manage VMware/vSphere/ESX/ESXi servers, perform second level support for Windows users, manage printers, travel onsite for servicing, be on call 24/7 (for no extra pay), and be able to interact like a jolly good fellow with customers, co-works and management, oh, and write documentation and explain things as well as Carl Sagan could.
Offered pay: $40,000-50,000/year
Sure...lots of people like that...and all are willing to do it for $40,000 a year
I don't think so...
But it gets worse!
If you don't put all the appropriate keywords they want, they won't even look at your resume, even if you could do all the things they ask for...for example, I had one recruiter, after seeing I had installed, patched, secured, put on line and monitored Solaris servers, ask me if I had ever configured a Solaris system. I explained that what I had listed includes "configuration", but he refused to send the customer my resume until I added "configured" to the sentence.
Then you get past the HR people...and you end up with a trivia contest from the tech people...who only know one way of doing things since they learned it by rote...so if you don't do it their way, you don't get the job...
Am I bit bitter at this point in my job search? Yes, just a tad. 10+ years Linux/Unix admin experience...and still can't get a job!
Too many windows fanboys/paid flacs have Slashdot accounts these days and mod anything that has legit criticism of MS products down...I've been watching this happen for the past little while here...and I would not be suprised if many of the IP address of those moding down post that are critical of MS come from Microsoft campuses or those employed by MS.

This is very true! The Harper Regime is a Neo-Con wannabe, with many fundamentalist Christian members exhibiting some fscked up ideas about the end of the world and heave based upon their ideas...Remember, their flavour of Christianity believes that the more money you make shows you are more in their God's favour. This idea came from the fact that when Protestants left the Catholic Church, they needed some way to see if God was going to let them into Heaven. So they decided that God showed His favour by allowing them to make money, thus is became an obligation to work and make money for otherwise, they could not know if they were saved. Hence what we call the Protestant Work Ethic.
Therefor, if you are rich, it means that you are part of "The Elect", and are going to Heaven. Why is this not surprising?
So things like environmental protection and other limitations to making money (what we call laws against fraud, and other regulations), and welfare (which they see as giving people money for not working) are evil and must be removed because it's against Gods will.
It's all about how well the film makers can can tell a story. Too many SF movies are created by people who are enamoured with the *idea* of SF, but who know almost *nothing* about SF. This is this is similar to people who try to sell steaks based upon their sizzle, rather than how the meat tastes.
I love your comment about how they used the Turbolift in Star Trek...that is a *classic* story telling device. And it doesn't depend on on any SFX.
Similarly, It doesn't matter if the SFX are done digitally, or with models....if you are telling a good enough story, it won't matter. That is why theatre works, it's all about the story, not the props, or the sets...but how the story is portrayed by the actors.
A good example of this is the movie Dark Star. Crap SFX, but a compelling a twisted story, and this movie is a cult classic. Who wrote and produced it? John Carpenter, and Dan O'Bannon. Watch it. These guys understand SF, and that is why these people went on to produce some of the classic SF and Horror films of our day.

No, it was a brilliant move, since it was a signpost showing if the concert promoter/event host had actually read the contract and addressed the safety concerns of the band. If they showed up and saw that the wrong type of M&Ms present it tipped them off that the their host had not read the contract completely.

That move by VH was the most brilliant single thing that any band/artist has added to the standard touring contract!!! And probably the most misunderstood!
Actually, QNX is not a new platform, in fact, it pre-dates *ALL* of the platforms out there, the QNX operating system is 29 years old. It's a very successful niche player, being a real-time microkernel based Unix like operating system. It is used in many embedded applications around the world. I do have a pesonal connection to QNX, I was fortunate to know Dan Hildebrand, who was one of the early leading lights of QNX, as well as a number of past and current employees. I followed the continuing success of QNX over the years. It is a company and an operating system that can stand on it's own, but RIM acquired them from the Harmon Company (aka Harmon/Kardon). If RIM goes done, it won't be because of the quality of QNX...and I hope that they spin off, or sell off QNX if they go down.
