  1. Re:INCORRECT Correlation on What Carriers Don't Want You To Know About Texting · · Score: 2, Insightful

Wow. Quit sleeping through your econ classes.

Charging 3 different customers different prices for the same product is called discrimination. Great if you can get away with it (sometimes called a senior citizen or student discount), but not how most businesses operate.

The grandparent was correct, and you pretty much agree with the post in your second paragraph there. Text message market should be in perfect competition. Text messages from Sprint are exactly the same as those from Verizon, they are perfect substitutes. In a correctly functioning market, market forces will push commodities with perfect substitutes down to the marginal cost. Marginal cost is the price it takes to create the last widget, or in this case text message. As per the article, text messages cost almost nothing, therefore, the price of text messages should be almost nothing. The fact that this is not the case indicates that the market is not functioning correctly.

  8. Re:Once every two days? on Rocky Planet Discovered · · Score: 5, Interesting

Its Earth-like because it is a rocky, rather than gaseous planet. Astronomers have to find new planets by detecting the wobble in the path of the star being orbited, which is caused by the orbiting planet. The bigger the planet, the bigger the wobble, so big gas giants were the first planets found. The fact that it completes an orbit in two days also helps as you don't need to collect years of data in order to see the wobble. So it's really not very Earth-like, but its the closest thing found so far, outside of our solar system.

When I was in high school a few years ago we did the same thing, only we didn't have to install the keylogger. The IT department suspected students of "hacking" and decided to install a keylogger. Apparently they didn't inform the teachers and for some reason they also decided to leave the log files on the machines unprotected. All we had to do was wait for a teacher to use a lab machine, then browse a few KB worth of text files left open on the hard drive until we found the poor sap's login and password.

Someone did get busted eventually, but they didn't go to jail, they just took a zero for that particular test. I wonder if they ever noticed how half the class went from acing every test to C's after that little fiasco.

  15. Re:What security on One-Time Pads To Protect Electronic Bank Access · · Score: 3, Insightful
Keep in mind folks, that in the US, electronic funds transfers just require your account number, and bank routing number. Someone armed with those two numbers, and a cooperative banking service, can drain your accounts dry, just as if someone got a hold of a blank check and forged your signature. In either case, you're in trouble unless someone at your bank puts up a red flag and stops it.

I've always wondered what keeps someone from simply taking a check you've written (to them possibly) and then using the account information at the bottom with your personal information at the top to drain your account.

Plus, if all the "Honest People" carry guns, why wouldn't your aggressor ? Then if both have guns, who wins ? Do you start a duel in the middle of the street ? I believe in this situation, there wouldn't be any muggings. Muggers prey on the weak. If there's a good chance that they'll be shot at while trying to steal $80 out of someone's wallet, they'll move on to someplace where people don't all carry guns and are an easier target.
