  1. Thanks for the irony on Missouri Law Says Students, Teachers Can't Be Facebook Friends · · Score: 1

I believe you're referring to Mississippi, which usually rates near the bottom when it comes to education. Missouri is usually ranked near the center.

  2. That's pretty much my attitude too on Using Brain Waves Can Shorten Braking Distance · · Score: 1

  4. Uh...no on The End of the Gas Guzzler · · Score: 1

Cars today are not lighter and made from weaker materials. Government crash standards are much more stringent than they were a couple decades ago, and cars are much heavier than comparably sized cars were in the 70s and 80s, partly due to safety requirements. One example: a modern Mustang starts at about 3400 pounds, a 1965 mustang started nearly a thousand pounds lighter.

I do agree that a gas tax is the better way to go, and the mpg numbers they're kicking around seem unrealistic, but I wouldn't say they're unreachable.

  5. So...fewer trucks on the highway? WIN! on The End of the Gas Guzzler · · Score: 1

Seriously, rail is much more efficient for moving freight. Cost of fuel goes up, rail becomes more competitive, and I-5 ceases to be one long parade o' semis. Sounds good to me. Plus fewer trucks means less wear and tear on the roads, more win.

People behaving oddly generally are shunned in public. But when they're on a stage or screen, we expect them to behave out of the norm, so our brains understand that even though they're acting strange, they're really "normal" people. For some reason this makes me think of Andy Kaufman...

Yeah, the partnership was so successful that IBM eventually launched it's own OS (OS2) in an attempt to retake the PC market, which failed and lead to their exit from the PC business all together. Yes, IBM survived, but it's a shadow of what it used to be. Ask any of their many ex-employees.

That doesn't sound like much time to me, but we never learn if there were any earlier warnings sent to Gass, and it appears that our genius of a reporter NEVER THOUGHT TO ASK.

Where do you get that? Scientology started as a scam, but it's followers were certainly encouraged to take it very seriously(rubes don't write checks if you tell them you're pulling their leg). From what I understand Islam's founding is quite well documented and there's nothing to suggest that Mohammed was much of a kidder. As for Christianity and Judaism, hard to say what was really going on when they got started.
