    The city can just supply outlets, keep the cable in the car except when charging. It shouldn't be too hard to lock one end of the cable while charging.

    Darwinism will take care of any thieves who try cut cables carrying 220-volt alternating current.

    I tried that for a year or so. Wasn't too bad, but there is the time lost at the rental agency, and sometimes difficulty in getting the right car if we had a lot to haul. It is fun to road trip in a new-to-you vehicle. It's workable if you only need it a few times a year, more than that it's a pain.

    ...I'd mod you up. It's easy to choose to forgo buying music because it's expensive and you don't like the industry's business practices, but the textbook publishers have their (mostly poor)customers by the short hairs, and they leverage that for all their worth. It's time for a change.

    And yet, gas is cheaper in Oregon than in California. And if you compare the price of full service gas (if you can find it) to Oregon, it's not even close. Yeah, sometimes it's a pain to have to wait a couple minutes when it's busy, but most of the year it's cold and wet here, it's kind of nice not having to get out and pump. Plus you don't smell like gas for the next two hours.

    I'd rather pay someone minimum wage to pump my gas than pay him to sit around and collect welfare.

    That does not imply that we are at war with a country, rather that we are assisting a "friendly" regime to stay in power.

    The Iraqui army was defeated, Sadam is dead, we occupy and control every square kilometer of Iraq. The war is over.

    What we have now is an occupation, and you can't win an occupation. You either occupy or don't. I can't think of any colonial power that has been able to successfully occupy another nation since WWII (arguably Soviets in Eastern Europe), so I don't think our chances are good.

    The Chinese have done pretty well in Tibet, but they did it by moving millions of Chinese settlers into the region. Maybe we can get all our dittoheads to move to Iraq for the good of the cause.

    I believe 50,000 is roughly the number of Americans killed per year by automobiles, but alcohol is involved in a fraction of those deaths. And yes, the war on terror is shameless, sickening, and a horrible waste.

    ...but I like the eye candy too. I've been using Vista at work for a couple months, and when you look at a computer screen all day it is nice to have it look good. That said, Vista really makes me wish that Steve Jobs' evil twin was CEO of MS. There are so many design and UI inconsistencies and inane default settings, a Jobs regime would have been lopping off heads left and right if they tried to get this past him.

    Bush was elected in 2000. With a budget surplus. The Democrats got "control" of congress in late 2006, little over a year ago. If you consider "control" to mean caving every time the Republicans even whisper the word "filibuster".

    The Dems may suck, but the deficit exploded under a Republican administration with a Republican controlled congress.

    I'm running a 3ghz celeron with 1 gig RAM. I wouldn't call it a get-a-cup-of-coffee delay, but the machine is pretty sluggish for 10-20 seconds while AVG does it's update. Not a deal breaker--I'm still running it, even though I could get Symantec AV for free--but an annoyance.

    I wish it would just do it's thing quietly in the background without announcing every update, but hey, it's free.

    No kidding. I put it on my mom's laptop, and I know it won't be long before I'm getting panicky phone calls about those update notices. I also don't like how it basically kidnaps your system on startup until it updates, it should just work in the background.

    That's my point, they don't pay ANYTHING for the privilege of running their cable on my property. That right is granted to them by the government. The OP is complaining that if it weren't for government interference we'd have a cornucopia of cable companies competing to run cable to our door. My point is that without government interference there wouldn't be any cable companies at all.

    Here's what one power co says in their pole attachment FAQs: " If you are working on a State or County Highway, you must obtain a highway work permit from that agency. You should also check national, state, county and local municipal codes."

    So it would appear the government can stop you from cutting a deal with the utility pole owners. As for laws prohibiting cable company competition, the Cato Institute disagrees with you: "Consequently, most municipalities intervene in the market and do not permit two cable companies to compete directly for subscribers.
