    What are you talking about? HFS+ can store metadata, and OS X can use Creator/Type information. Apple has added the ability to use file extensions to make interoperation with you Windows/Unix knuckle-draggers easier, but the metadata capabilities are still there.

    Please, it'd be very simple to make a bootable floppy that would look for linux partitions, mount them, copy the software over, and modify the init scripts to start it at boot. Put in the floppy, press reset, wait for awhile, turn off computer. When spouse returns home, tell him/her you accidentally unplugged the computer while vacuuming.

    I don't see how that would stop your spouse from installing a keyboard monitor. It is every bit as possible under Linux as on any other OS, no matter what the uninformed Slashbots might say.

    X can do all of the things you mentioned via extensions like Xrender. Software needs to be written to use these extensions, but it's certainly easier to do that than to rewrite everything for a completely new windowing system. Like it or not (I personally like it) we're stuck with X for the foreseeable future.

    The console makers would work hard on porting the graphic libraries to their hardware, making them as fast and featureful as possible. Then all of the games would run better on their console than on their competitors'. The nice thing is that the libraries need only be written once, by the people who know the most about the hardware.

    Reread the parent post, it contains the answer. Under Artists, choose All. You'll then be presented with a list of all albums. Choose Movie X soundtrack and away you go.

    Actually, there is an entire book about it. It's called "The Big Splash" IIRC, and it was written by a University of Iowa professor named Louis Frank. I haven't really been following this "ice comets" business much but I think I heard recently that there was some new evidence for his theory. You can read about it at:

    You can use more than one browser, you know. I use Omniweb for most things, and if I need better CSS/javascript support I fire up IE for that site. It's a program, not your wife. Be promiscuous and happy! :-)

    The problem is that when you run dvips the CMR fonts get rendered as bitmaps into the postscript file, so that when you view it on the screen there's no way to hint or antialias them. You can either configure dvips to substitute Type 1 fonts for the MetaFont ones or (what I do) use pdftex to directly make PDF files. These are a lot nicer for viewing and still print just as well.

    It's a perfectly good word. Proper usage would be something like "I waited hopefully all night, but Ed McMahon never showed up with my $10 million check". Because so many people use it as a synonym for "it is to be hoped that", though, many would claim that as acceptable usage nowadays as well. Where's William Safire when you need him?
