I have an iPod, and use it entirely with non-Apple software on my linux box. Please explain to me how it "needs" iTunes.

Seriously tho, the real problem that I'm trying to address is the fact that many people have begun to think something along the lines of how the only way you can get music on the iPod is from iTMS, which is not true. iTunes just provides a convinent music store which provides seamless integration with the iPod, and is obviously easier than buying the album and ripping it.

I was never really a huge fan of Nokia becuase of the fact that all of their phones were comparitavely bulky to the newer generation flip phones from Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc. It always irritated me that every single one of their devices was essentially an elongated rectangular prism (some models like NGage being the exception), often being heavier than the competetion. Of the many models that I've tried out, I always found the buttons to be somewhat hard to press, with the "keypad lock" feature to prevent accedental pressing of buttons while in a pocket/bag absolutely unbearable compared to the relative ease of just flipping a phone open.

I, for one, don't care about "interchangable faceplates" when the devices themselves are of somewhat dated design.

  15. There is a way to connect two iPods on The iPod Gets WiFi, Sort Of · · Score: 5, Informative
Since Firewire is a peer to peer protocol, unlike USB being host and client, it is technically possible to connect two iPods together and share files. An implementation does exist, but its described as being "slow and buggy"

One of the iPods must have iPodLinux installed, which should include firewire support, as well as SBP2 support. Compile this as a module, and then connect the two iPods together with the Sendstation Pocketdock if they are 3G, or just a regular 6pin to 6pin FW cable if they are 1st or 2nd generation. Put the other iPod into firewire disk mode, and the one running linux should be able to mount it and access the files. This is incredibly impractical, as typing on the iPod requires turning the scroll wheel until the right character appears (incredibly annoying), and also very slow. However, it just goes to show that it _is_ possible for iPods to share files with just minimal extra hardware.

All the fiction books I bought were required reading for my English class, and, yes, the prices were simply horrendous. A 200 page book (Hesse, "Beneath the Wheel" ) for example, cost $12. That is simply ludicrous.

That's why I just return the books to the store after reading. There is never any visible damage, and by not flattening out pages when reading, the spine of paperbacks still look new. I don't highlight or notate in books either (never really understood why ppl do this when you can just use post-it notes, etc).

Though arguably immoral, nobody actually loses money in this circumstance. The bookstore can resell the book at original price. Besides, I still actually buy (without returning) my fair share of books (mostly nonfiction) to balance this out.

  20. Bad analogy in article on Auto Manufacturers Running Out Of Unique IDs · · Score: 2, Informative
In the article, it keeps mentioning how a "VIN is to a vehice as DNA is to a human," however, this comparison is flawed in many ways.

First of all, you use the VIN to seach for details about a vehicle in a database, its not there to build a vehicle out of, which is the essential purpose of DNA for humans.

Secondly, you can't use a DNA sequence to seach for information about a person by simply typing it into a form somewhere on the net.

And then there exists the fact that there exist humans with the exact same DNA. Identical twins, for example, have the same genetic code.

They should say something like "a VIN is to a vehicle as an SSN is to a person." Even though the SSN is only in the US, its still a better analogy in comparison.

The BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) system in the SF/Bay Area costs just about the same to use, the only difference is that its not a flat rate, but rather, a calculated fare from station to station, averaging around $3 a ride, one way. The discounts if bought in bulk are minimal (only $4 savings when $60 worth of fare is bought), and I don't think there is an "all day pass" or anything of that sort.

I think it goes to show that when you think of this kind of rapid transit system, don't think "bus fare," which is usually cheaper. It may also be because these systems are not subsidized by local or state authorities, forcing them to charge higher fare. (though I'm not sure if this is true in either of these cases)
