    When you talk about unintelligent choices, you've reduced the entire discussion into one of subjective preferences. The problem is, how can one decide what an intelligent design is, in simple and objective terms?

    In other words, why is the current design of the human eye "bad"? Compared to what?

    Suppose you want to download a digital receipt of a purchase you made.

    Suppose you get an e-mail with a large encryption key that you have to copy & paste in order for your purchased software to work.

    Suppose you need to collect evidence against some one doing harm to you (evil boss, colleagues or you're being subject to ID theft).

    Suppose you want to copy & paste for legitimate uses, such as school or uni research. Who the hell are they to tell you what you can copy or not once it is already inside YOUR computer?

    So? Although the distinction between economic and political systems may make sense in a textbook definition, reality shows that one turns into another, so that they are intimately intertwined nowadays.

    See, Chinese communist party members must suppress the political expression of its citizens to make communism work. And this suppression is, by it self, achieved through political ways, through use of force (either police or [para]militar) to quiet diverging political opinions.

    Is communism an economic system? Hardly. Only if it is not supposed to become real.

    It must be fascinating to look at it, since you'll be able to see the inner workings of the thing.

    Although I am not old enough to write about it, I just imagine how interesting it would be to be able to look into a panel and track the movement of a single byte through the system, as described in an old Wired article on old computer systems.

    I also imagine that, once my amazement wears off, looking into a panel full of flashing lights must have been very, very boring. Go figure.

    Of course, if you don't like casinos, don't go to them. They only exist to fulfill a need/desire that many people have, and unless that goes away, they'll continue to exist.

    Yeah. Unfortunately, this explanation also fits Microsoft. The lusers (in all levels, from home user to PHBs) will continue to drive their profits and existance, not technical merit, innovation or quality.

    I just wonder whether /.ers will ever get this.

    So what? Unless it is proven that the deletion of a message in my screen actually triggers the deletion of all the copies of the message in the distributed production servers and on the backups, we can consider that the messages, for practical purposes, are never deleted.

    I say this because useful datamining can be done with the backups. Depending on the purposes of a study, you do not have to have production data for it and your privacy might be violated.

    Although I respect Google and I think they'll make their best to fulfill the terms of their own TOS, it would be naïve to trust Google completely, unless there's an independent review of their internal processes. And there is no guarantee that a Google might be able to keep their privacy promise if the US (or any other country where they host their servers on) becomes a fully-fledged police state.

    This gives another spin to "the price of liberty is eternal vigilance" stuff, huh?

    We know they're lying - we understand enough of the underlying technology to infer that. But how can one prove that in a court, especially the keyword search statement?

    As for the second point, Linux Australia should really send back a C&D letter and force MPAA to prove that their content is a movie in a court, at risk of being sued for perjury, as everyone else is saying in this story. But the Internet is rather volatile and I just cannot find a way to prove that a file, at a certain date, at a certain location, had a certain content. Even if you point to a kind of cache, someone will have to prove, at some point, that the cache itself is reliable enough (ie, cannot be tampered with) to be used as court evidence.

    You also mention that we could end up with two standards both of which are supported by all players (a.la DVD(+|-)R[W] ). If that is the final result, who cares?

    I would care. This marvelous (say, fictional?) DVD player would be very expensive, due to all the licensing "taxes" that would be included in the final retail price. Regular folks would be locked out of their own video library, unless they buy high-end equipment. Smells like extorsion.

    if all buildings on the same block reflected efficiently UV, and if this block was located in Manhattan, and if this was a sunny, summer day, planting trees would do no good.

    With all the radiation boncing back and forth, the poor plant would get roasted by the end of the day!

    (Of course, I'm exaggerating, but if we were surrounded with efficiently UV reflective surfaces woudn't this add to the risk of skin cancer??? This reminds me of a crazy ad in Robocop 1 or 2, that depicted a sort of new sunscreen - a blue-colored cream. To achieve maximal protection, the user would pass such a thick coat of the sunscreen that the user would end up looking like a Smurf!)

    As the windows get darker, they might absorb more radiation as well, getting way much hotter than otherwise.

    Convection would be an issue and this would not solve the problem of the perceived heat inside the car or the building.

    Additionally to planting trees, do like the mediterraneans: paint the house with whitewash and build with materials that do not retain heat (or you could end up with a house just like mine: in the summer, it gets much hotter than the exterior - it's like a pizza oven, effectively).

    Yeah... the audacity is astonishing.

    And it seems that the lawyer never read the book (or she would think twice before harrassing KatieJ) and, if she gave legal counsel to KatieT, she never really cared about the case - only the good $$$ she could make from it.
