But you can get about 6+ years of development kit (@$99) for one Adobe Flash ($699). Just depends on what you want to build. (Just remember Linux, g++ and OpenGL are still FREE!)
I have recycled several systems, upgraded others and always kept the hard drives (personal info paranoia). I took one apart the other day and decided that the three very reflective platters could be arranged to make a great shaving mirror for the shower.
and not getting the 'new car' smell.
But really, how many other things do you buy used and lose something over a new version: a book with a special coupon insert, DVD with ticket to the sequel, cereal missing the toy (strike that last one!)
They will probably start trying to find good apps as they are being developed and tested. That way they can acquire them before they make it to the app store. Not that I would sell out on the app I am developing. Not even for a big chunk of cash and a good job at Google. No way. (Call me...)

The providers will just add the 'advertising fee' to their prices. So the average price will go from $250 to $275. Er, I mean it will go from whatever they charge now to that plus $25. (Damn, now I have to rework my budget!)
I think the importance of this event is indicated by the number of postings and discussions it has generated here on/. It has to be a truly significant topic to draw thousands of responses! (Oh, by the way, I just read that they have proof that C++ is better than Java - discuss!)
I think this post is on the right track. Since the WWW is essentially user interface and data distribution system (a truly amazing one) on top of a worldwide network infrastructure, and since most of the issues are content or access related, it seems that you would run into most of the same problems without the WWW layer in place.
I could use archie to find an ftp site with music files on it then use ftp and mget to pull over some subset of those files with a single command. Same problems with RIAA, copyrights, etc. If I then try to access an ftp site which contains information my country considers subversive and they can trace my IP address, I still end up in jail without ever using a browser.
Just ask Vanilla Ice.
But it did get easier. I made it through Advanced Waving in about 6 months.
