  1. Curious on MIT, Boston College Refuse DMCA Subpoenas · · Score: 3, Interesting

From the article: ...In a subpoena addressed to MIT, the association is demanding the name, address, and phone number of a student who used the nickname ''crazyface'' to download at least five songs, including Radiohead's ''Idioteque'' and Dave Matthews Band's ''Ants Marching.''...

So lets get this straight - the (alleged) student used the nickname "crazyface" to download "at least" 5 songs? How do they know this unless they were sharing the songs and monitoring who downloaded them in the first place? Does this mean that the RIAA were sharing songs on KaZaa??

If this is the case, are they also not liable under the DMCA?

I've seen some strange moderation in my time, however could anyone explain to me how the above post could possibly be considered "offtopic"?

GMT doesn't change, but the offset changes at least twice a year. Currently here (Sweden) it's GMT+2 since we are in daylight saving period, but usually we are in the GMT+1 timezone. So then you have to twice a year adjust when the script is run, and apparently not everyone change to/from daylight saving time at the same time, which means even more headache

I thought you could use NTP on each machine to keep the time correct even during offset months?

GMT doesn't change so all you need to do is keep a list of each machine and it's GMT offset and schedule your scripts accordingly.

  6. lmao on Celebrating Bad Game Packaging Art · · Score: 5, Funny

    From GameSpy

Since older videogames had relatively simple graphics, box art artists often had to "embellish" and conjure up visions of what they imagined the game would look like if the creators had more than 16k of memory to work with.

Unfortunately, the guy who did the artwork for the Atari Computer port of Pac-Man envisioned Pac-Man as a buck-toothed, Frisbee eating, washed-up marathon runner with high socks who lived in a castle.

There's a rumor that a live-action Pac-Man movie may be in the works, but it won't be nearly as good as my version. If I directed the film, Pac-Man would be an unemployed guy in a yellow suit who lives in a dirty apartment and verbally abuses his wife (Mrs. Pac-Man). At the beginning of the film, Mrs. Pac-Man leaves Pac-Man for Dig Dug ("At least that way I'll get a good pumping every once in awhile," she'll say) and Pac-Man soon spirals deep into a crippling "power pellet" addiction. To make matters worse, the ghosts buy Pac-Man's apartment complex and threaten to evict him. Pac-Man is powerless to stop the ghosts, so he gets chased from his home and ends up chomping up marbles on the street. Eventually, he starts having seizures due to pellet withdrawal and ends up in rehab. He's cured and released, but ends up overdosing on power pellets, bursting into the landlord's office, and eating all the ghosts to death. Then Pac-Man goes on trial for murder and it's really dramatic.

Hollywood will no doubt steal my brilliant story idea. Just you wait.

How about "more or less anything?" Premiere is awkward to use, but once learned is an extremely powerful package. The amount of layers that you can use alone makes it more "powerful" than FCP.

FCP is a good package - lets make no mistake about that - if you want simple video editing, then it can do it, however Premiere is a lot more flexible, if a lot more complicated, however with power comes the knowledge pre-requisite.

You want to do extremely complicated edits, use Premiere and perhaps consider After Effects. You want pain free relatively basic editing, get FCP.

To expound on your thoughts a little bit, I think the govt. could abuse this technology if they wanted to. However, what 1984 crying wolf types forget is that only a govt bent on it's own aims rather than insuring individual freedoms for its constituants would abuse such a system. Luckily in a free society, the free press can act as a watchdog for us and prevent govts. from abusing their power by giving us the information to make good decisions during elections. That said, rather than focusing our energy on banishing RFID technology, which does have good uses, it may be better to focus our energy on correcting real abuses of the govt with the power we've given them.

Are you actually serious? If you are, then I am genuinely worried. Take the US Govt for example - are you seriously suggesting that a government that fabricates evidence to go to war to keep the price of "gas" down is not bent on it's own aims?? Are you seriously suggesting that the press could report anything that the government really really didnt want it to? Are you suggesting that all the information you see before elections is TRUE? Even during the election that the vote counts are not fiddled?

I don't recall giving any government any power. It is a hegemony.
