Now that the cat is out of the bag, it's hard to see what Microsoft can do other than what they did to...
I like Linux as much as the next guy ( I run it almost exclusively) But seriously how many times do I have to read M$ is doomed! DOOOMMED!
Windows is popular in schools (as is mac) because the experience is more seamless then it is in a flavour of Linux. Schools are not trying to just teach computers to kids, their trying to get them to read, write, perform arithmetical, or other tasks that are SEEN as separate from the computing experience. As soon as you have to explain to teaching staff that Gnome isn't Linux isn't GNU isn't RedHat... you've lost the case because the teachers are just going to say "This isn't a computer class! Why do I have to learn this!?"
I think Linux would be great is schools but until you have a reasonably seamless experience your not going to get anywhere.
The arguments always come down to cost: "Linux will save you money". Sure it will. But these institutions are used to spending money to get what they think they need. Your not going to win this argument with cost benefits alone, you have to convince them that Linux will do a better job then Windows and Mac and as of right now I don't think that's an easy case to make.
I've always said, companies should be responsible for the entire lifecycle of any product they produce, including its safe disposal.
That is exactly what is needed. The Smart companies will stop disposal all together, by choosing materials that they can reuse indefinitely, or materials that will decompose back to soil safely. But you don't have to take my word for it: http://www.mcdonough.com/cradle_to_cradle.htm
I see. I didn't consider how network admins would question it. I guess windows would have to be stuck with one or more subsets of features to choose from. That sours the deal quit a bit but I suppose it is still worth while.
If you want to get really anal you might mention that nearly all power sources are solar, the one exception (that I can think of) is geothermal. The energy in fossil fuel is also a product of the sun.
I think your concern is justified, but can they not release a single installer with all necessary files as needed? Windows users would have to wait for someone to release a stable build but I don't see the problem with that. The rest of use can just run it on Linux.
I think you've stated the root cause of this whole mess:
Part of the problem is that the developers don't usually install any DRM, it's usually done by the distributors.
DRM seems to be little more then investors and management trying to secure their investments in something they don't understand. They hear people are pirating their property and they freak out, not understanding the nuances of something they don't care about beyond their return on capital.
I've never heard of developers who support DRM, beyond the obvious "they pay me to make games not distribute them". I'd be interested to hear from a developer that thinks DRM is a positive force in the industry. I suspect however that they are few and far between.
I think your right to assume that human intelligence will continue to expand. However if we were somehow able to provide AI with our capability for expansion would they not then be able to expand right along with us? Or perhaps even differently or faster ?
Wow that makes a lot of sense!
Trouble is that most people wouldn't even pull out a calculator or spread sheet to make a decision about car financing. Frankly most people live paycheck to paycheck or (worse) on credit. People like this shit themselves when they see their bills at the pump and throw in the towel (their SUVs).
People would be better served to hang onto those beasts till the financing facilitated a switch. And frankly that would be better for the environment in the long run. I don't know a measure of the ecological footprint on the manufacture of a new car but I bet you would have to drive a SUV for many many years before you could meet it.
Bah! I used the last of my mod points up this morning. Someone mod parent up. I never made the connection between dickheads on bikes and dickheads in SUVs.
With any luck I will now no longer have to swerve my 1 1/2 ton truck off the road every time some guy in SUV comes along and expects me and my useful vehicle to get out of his way. =P
I'm not sure which is more pathetic, the fact that this issue caused a "heated, emotional" controversy, OR the fact that we are all sitting here talking about it!
Can someone explain to me why the program has to do one or the other !!!??? Why can't it auto resize until you manually resize it?? "Oh but I don't want to manually resize the chat window every time". Fair enough. So tie the resized dimensions to the program session and be done with it.
Now why wouldn't that work???
Maybe Nvidia should talk to Motorola instead.
I'd love to see a modern-day version of the 68060.
Agreed - I'd like to see the design of the 68000 influence modern chips (more), especially on the higher end of things.

Thanks some good advice! I like the maintenance angle sounds pretty bullet-proof to me. Cheers.
Kindly elaborate. I'm not sure what you mean. Do you just cross out those passages ??
If your not already familiar with the work of William McDonough, I suggest the following talk at TED from 2005: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/william_mcdonough_on_cradle_to_cradle_design.html fascinating and hopeful stuff!
I second the "HUH?", care to elaborate?

They do, but I think the idea here is to entice users who wouldn't know about Ubuntu until they saw it in a store.

I've been considering the new 09 Prius. I think you just made my mind up for me. Cheers!

Mod Parent UP! Where are my funny points when I need them??
