There is a great AJAX API/ToolKit for those just getting started. It is the easiest I have used so far in any of my applications.. It is called "AJFORM". I do not remember the URL however.
"I began to get dialog boxes which popped up informing me, not that files were missing, but that files had been replaced with unrecognized versions. I find this to be a very misleading message considering files had not been replaced, but removed from the system entirely."
The explanation for this is that windows will actually replace some files which are deleted. But if you have security updates installed, it may replace the system with older files. One prime example of this is if you delete iexplore.exe (internet explorer).
At the risk of being modded down into oblivion I will say that your question touches on one of the very reasons that the now almost defunct jabberdoc.org saw such great demise. Despite pleas from the Jabber community to release JabberDoc under the Creative Commons, the JabberDoc team decided to go with the GNU Free Documentation License instead. This led to many restrictive policies as well as bureaucratic confusion. You can read more about it on old Jabber mailing lists.
Obviously, there was a lot to be learned here, but it is really just a matter of using the right tool for the right job, and in many cases the GNU Free Documentation License is not the right tool for certain jobs. Even RMS himself stated this when first interviewed on the scope of the license.
...but should information and the pursuit of it be free? My understanding is that you are well experienced programmer/software engineer. What are your thoughts on...
-Reverse Engineering Proprietary software and protocols -Exporting Crypto to various restricted nations -The validity of software patents
Before flaming the Firefox devs, take into account that this was not simply some egotistical power play by Ben and the other devs. This was mainly the result of a restrictive licensing issue on the artwork.

But does it _RUN_ linux?
Thats no better than:
"So, would you like to buy a service contract from IBM?"
"You what? Well.. err the restroom is right down the hall."
They already do that. The problem is that you can gather a list of say 2,000 proxies and really go to town with it.
90210 actually IS my zip code.
To calculate the equivalent contract rate of a base salary, divide your yearly base salary by 2000 and that will give you your hourly rate.
Example:
($100,000 / 2000) would be $50 per hour

this is, as of right now, purely correlatory
No, DO NOT do this! I have tried this and windows will actually create a new IEXPLORE.EXE and it will create a lot of random problems.

A tad misinformed are we?
launchTimedPrompt() is a user defined function. How are you going to block that "across the board"?
The real solution to the problem is to restrict dialogs to their respective windows/tabs.
or comparing Cherries to Pears?

My condolences to your spell-checker. May it rest in peace werever it may have gone off to.

I might add one more such example as abolishing seatbelt laws.
Simon of Simon & Garfunkel was indeed a math teacher, but a crypto expert? I don't think so.

"Its time for goverments to step in and force standards. The Internet must remain open and interoperability is essential."
Haha, nice troll. You've really fooled the mods. I applaud you.
I dont think the article mentioned this, but VisiCalc was also the first (known) enterprise app to be ported from the Apple OS to a *Nix based system.
3Com has been hurt in a very similar way that Hayes was with their modems.
They were high quality and fairly high priced, but in the end, just couldnt keep up when the latest wave of networking technology rolled through.
