Actually - I am VERY happy with Yahoo's premium service. After (stupidly) posting a few usenet posts with my real Yahoo e-mail address, I started getting large amounts of SPAM. Yahoo puts 80% of them automatically in a BULK mail folder. (even if you don't have the premium service).
Now that I signed up for the premium service, I download all the e-mails via POP3, and look for the X-Yahoo-Bulk header, which means it came from the Yahoo Bulk folder. Add to that a local Spam filter using baysian filtering - and now I have about 1 spam in my inbox every two weeks, when in reality about 80% of the e-mail I get is spam.
now THAT is some good filtering!
You're right - but when a press release has the word "new technology" and "secure" in the same sentence....it's a pretty good chance there's DRM involved.
At first I read this and I thought we're talking about downloading MP3's.
I thought "wow someone finally gets it! They know they have no choice". I clicked on the article hoping to find a link to one of these sites selling the music, and actually thought I'd buy an album to check it out.
After careful scrutiny, I noticed this line from the article: We are using new technology to benefit both artists and consumers by massively expanding the amount of music available securely online,"
This is not MP3's nor is it Ogg, and I am not going to buy anything that limits me in any way.
and as far as I can tell the only 3D things in the software are the giant sphere that makes the earth and the video card required to run it
I've installed it too. It's not immediately apparent, but there are quite a few 3D elements to this app. 1st, you can turn on elevation mapping where you see the terrain elevation. 2nd there is a control that lets you control your angle of view, combined with the eleveation mapping it's a pretty damn cool effect.
Ever since I installed it on my dad's computer he's been showing it to every guest.
as cliche'd as these analogies and analogie shattering responses have become on slashdot on all the IP stories, I have to put my bit in here:
Authorities in [your country name here] today raided several warehouses, looking for beer making components in a widespread crackdown on home-brew that several large consortiums claim is responsible for annual corporate loses in the millions.
your analogies are flawed. If we were talking about people listening to home made music instead of commercial music, or even people listening to indie bands that make their MP3's available on the internet insead of commercial music, then you'd have a point.
Here is where I would take your analogy and try to fix it to make it work for this case. The problem is, IP cases DONT HAVE real world analogies, as this is new ground. This is why this is such a big problem and dilema in the first place.
One of the purpose of a programming language in general is to hide gory details from the programmers, to allow them to better concentrate on the task at hand. Scripting languages excel in this!!
Otherwise we'd all be programming in Assembler..
Anyone who's ever programmed Microsoft VC++/COM/ATL/STL/MFC will attest that that particular environment does not do a very good job of hiding gory details.
I choose the language based on the task, if a scripting language is good enough and performance is not an issue, I'll be the first one to use Perl or even VBScript.
Everyone knows they are just a bunch of cybersquaters who registered parliament.uk so all the people who don't know how to spell it the right way (Parlament) will get to their site.
oh wait... that is the right spelling? never mind.
There's not completely true. My hosting service has a database server "behind" the web server, but for me to manage my database on that server, I have to connect to that database directly.
a Forum/Message Board being in "read only" mode is not hibernation ! "Read only" is maybe suspended animation. Maybe it's Kyrogenically Frozen. or the VCR is on Pause. or it's in still-frame mode. or it's taking a break. or it's off on a vacation. or it's in debug mode on a breakpoint. or it's in neutral gear. or the windmill is waiting for the next gust of wind. or the elevator is stuck on a floor.
REDMOND, WA 10:39PM PST - Microsoft Corp is pleased to announce our new state of the art language, D# . Additionaly, Microsoft is anouncing our own VM which will run regular D code plus our own set of WDE (Windows D Extensions) which will improve the usability of D and decrease development times. Microsoft corp would like to stress that there will be a D-VM for other platforms soon (within 20-30 years).
Nielsen ratings only apply to nielsen households which is a small percentage of the american public. If your TiVo or your cable set-top box was allowed to send back viewing habits info to the cable provider, the media companies would have much better numbers to go by.
I never understood why people always get so riled up by that prospect.
Do you realize how many web pages and how much content 2% of the web is? There is no way you read 2% of the web.

Is that a pun?
Yes, because the rest of the P2P networks beneffited from you closing your client down after you finish your download?
Sounds like a great basis for another "Big Brother" reality show.
I wonder what is going to put a greater load on the keyhole/earthviewer servers...the Slashdotting or the AmericanPublicThirstForWarKnowledge-ing.

Finally a force stronger than the slashdot effect.

While hypercard came to my mind immediately too, I then realized that hypercard is all about static stuff linking to static stuff - nothing dynamic.
not for long buddy, not for long..

apparently the wikipedia is a reference source no slashdotter should be without.
I need to get out more.
The South African government has a CIO ? Next thing they'll be offering stock options and buying aeron chairs.
Is this any different than many software companies practice of saying "By opening the plastic wrapper, you agree to our EULA".

At first I read: "Scientists have found Ringo Star around our galaxy"
