Not one of Bill Gates biggest fans, but he had a great lecture for students. In one part of it, he said something to the effect that schools do everything in their power to try and make things fair. The faster you understand that the world is not fair and does not care if you think it owes you something the better you will do.

And there is good money in being a developer if you work hard. EE is no easier.

  2. Blockbuster needs to fail on Blockbuster Total Access Unannounced Policy Change · · Score: 1

I have not set foot in a Blockbuster in 10 years. Right before I canceled my account, Blockbuster screwed me saying I did not return a movie, wanted me to pay for it, found it, and made me pay a huge late fee. This was not the first time they gouged me so I told them to shove it. Glad to know that I am still not missing anything. Netflix has been so much better and they are even adding new free services like streaming video.

I would be surprised if Google would not want to stick with Mozilla. I have always viewed Chrome as Google's attempt to push browser technology. More ways to get to Google Search makes them more money. Dumping Mozilla and replacing them with a fledgling browser does not.

  7. Microsoft still goes not get it on How Vista Mistakes Changed Windows 7 Development · · Score: 4, Insightful

Microsoft is still pursuing a marketing strategy to try and squeeze money out of the OS at the expense of their true Customers, the people who actually use the OS. Until they return to serving only the end Customer and not music industry and other competing interests people will continue to move away from them.

I believe you are getting it wrong. There is a whole generation of Customers ripe for a new content delivery method that the MPAA and RIAA have tried to bully and extort. In response these Customers have rightfully turned their noses up at them, but not to say they would not purchase movies and music online if the service is easier and product is better than what they can get else where. The marketplace is brutal and if these companies want to be whiny idiots let them, but people should have no sympathy.

I expect that as technology progresses that the batteries will get better, but I am still hopeful that there will be more effort put into developing hydrogen powered cars. Then you would not need the huge acid lead batteries, emissions from the vehicles would be literally just water, and all the innovation could be focused on generating hydrogen.

That is a lot of sugar coating. XBMC is pretty, but it is just a simple frontend for multimedia files. You cannot program mythtv. You do not get features like automatic commercial skip when watching tv (in like, no need to press a remote button). And XBMC is pretty well known as is Boxee for having lots of bugs, and I would rather be watching content than rebooting my box.

Ballmer may have made that rant, but it was Bill who actually followed it. If you looks at the releases of visual basic, vba, excel, this was true, Microsoft courted developers. Once Ballmer took over, they changed their focus from the end customer and developers to a marketing strategy to try and get money from people who are not the end customer. That is why vista sucked and why drm and all the other "features" they are adding are nothing people actually want. This has cost them dearly.

Companies are very protective of their brands and sony, emi, warner bros, and universal do not like the negative image this is bringing them directly.
